I’m not one of the ones stressing over the Sutliff acquisition but I was surprised by all of the popular blends that they are cutting. Taking twice as long to get my order from smoking pipes because of app of the panic buying and I didn’t even order Sutliff leaf. I really enjoy 8 State! Have a great week!
Good Morning Brian - I love 8 State as well and have it cellared pretty deep here in Maryland. I hate seeing HH getting shut down - hopefully somebody will pick it up. I panic bought my favorite HH blends a while ago when the STG purchase become formal. Balkan Blend, ODF Ready Rubbed, Pure Virginia and Bold Kentucky. Happy New Year - good to see you.
Same thing happened to me with eight state. I didn’t care for it at all when I first got it, six months later I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it in the cooler weather.
Well they say that pipers all eventually turn to burleys. Eight state has intrigued me for a while. Nice review. As far as Sutliff, they are keeping the ones I enjoy the most around for the most part. The HH series an exception.
I was talking about the same thing in the video I made last night. I gotta go upload it. I like the Eight State Burley. Did from the start. Usually in a burley blend there isnt a whole lot of complexity to em. That one has a lot going on. It heats up quick if ya dont watch it though. Other than that its a good one. I hope they keep making it. Im glad Mark got ya in Pipe pedia. You belonged there. I got one of your pipes off Ebay as an estate. Stay warm up there.
Sad that we’ve lost another manufacturer. Hopefully someone will come forward to fill the gap that is going to be created come this spring. Thanks for doing what you do.!
Good Morning and Happy Saturday my friend. I agree that discontinuing the HH blends is a surprise. I loaded up a flake of HH Virginia in Doran poker to watch this today. I opened a tin of the 21 8 State Burley just before Christmas. It has quite the tin note. It does seem to age well. Have a great weekend.
In the last month, I’ve bought six pounds of HH Rustica and four of HH Old Dark Fired, in addition to three pounds of Watch City’s excellent rustica-based holiday blend.
Great video. I am looking over some of your pipes on eBay and they look great! Thank you for the snow. I'm in south Alabama and we haven't seen (what we would call) snow in about 10 years. It's always so pretty.
The whole Mac Baren/ Sutliff debacle definitely is disheartening. I’ve decided to stock up on blends from smaller places that may source the tobacco’s from Sutliff ie lj peretti, the country sqiure, watch city. Who knows how they will be affected. I always enjoy watching your videos. Have a good one Brian.
Good stuff, Brian! I enjoy this years 8 state Burley, but wasn’t around for any earlier ones, so not tried those This period gonna be interesting, and prob a bit crazy for sure, lol!😂
I panic-bought a pound of Bold Kentucky a couple weeks ago anticipating this exact scenario. Wish I could’ve got some more Rustica, but hopefully there’ll be another restock soon.
Eight state burley is very good, been a favorite for awhile. I am pretty well stocked up on Macbarren and Sutif...you know I heard apparently sutlif has like over 900 items in their catalog and most of them don't even sell a thousand pounds a year? I am sure they had some components sell very well, because other stores buy it to blend their own stuff, like watch city which I am sad for, but I got a bunch of that too. Really crazy to see this happen but follow the money, business fold and other ones step into the role to fill the void. Glad we have CnD =)
I was preparing for the worse and I was still shocked when I saw all they decided to keep was a few crap aromatics. I stocked up on what I wanted a month ago.
I knew you would stock up on the HH Bold Kentucky. Hopefully I'll be able to get some before it's gone. We still have G&H. I know you were busy over the holidays, but I was just checking on the status of the pipe you were making for the GAW. Absolutely no rush! Thanks again Brian for all that you do for us pipers. J.D.
Its interesting how many share the same experience with Eight State. It really improved for me after coming back to it. I hope C&D ups their burkey game with the departure of the H&H line
I liked it from the outset but like it even more aged. As a heavy burley smoker, I’m not sure how C&D could up their burley game much more. Pegasus, Haunted Bookshop, Eight state, Winchester, and the entire Burley Flake line are all pretty great.
@Govier good point. I suppose I have in mind a replacement for Burley flake by H&H. I know C&D has it barely flake line but they aren't near pure burly flakes.
@ Yes, I agree that HH Burley Flake is a unique blend. Mac Baren used flake equipment that only they had to process the blend. The Virginias they used also had a floral quality that no other burley blend has, in my opinion. I’m on the pipesmagazine forum and an STG rep shared a couple of the sales figures from the HH line.. sales were abysmal so I don’t blame STG for cutting the line. I always assumed that the HH tobaccos sold well… not so. Germany, the second largest pipe tobacco market on the planet behind the US, sold only 250 lbs of HH ODF in the previous fiscal year.
I’ve been on a huge burley kick lately. Even smoked through all of my hh burley flake, before i caught wind of the MacBaren news 😂. Maybe i’ll get lucky and be able to score a few tins or even a pound before all of whats left is sold?
I need to revisit this as when I first opened eight state burley the vanilla topping was nauseating. It stank so strong of vanilla I thought my tin was defective.
I’ll never know what I’m missing. Never got around to trying the HH blends, always wanted to though. I’ve been surprised by some tobacco that I just couldn’t stand becoming fantastic after the time treatment
Thankfully I have enough tobacco in my cellar to last me the rest of my life. I think I have about 6 tins of Mac Baren London Burley. I looked it up Beans and ya, it has both White and dark Burley and Oriental plus some Perique.
That’s my #1 blend from C and D!! It broke my heart when u last reviewed it. 😂 I loaded up on it every time it released. Sorry tho bud. That’s the only one I’d never trade
Lol...i also got 5 tins, opened one, couldn't finish a bowl - it was very not good. I've been wondering what to do with them Thank you, will gove it a 2nd shot
Love 8 state enjoy the weekend Dam shame about Sutliff crap thats happened cant believe how much is chopped Simon lcs put put a good video im deffo gonna miss out on a good few blends that i enjoy. 👍
I didn't care for the earlier 8 state. I think it was the topping and the way it interacted with the leaf flavors. But i suddenly love other tobaccos i didnt like lately. I'm glad i grabbed an 8 ounce tin of plum pudding because I knew it was coming hahaha.
Me to let’s hope for the best , I didn’t mention but I know Per G is in the works making some new blends for the Chicago pipe show let’s hope he can make some more magic
Bought another pound of Bold Kentucky. This will hit the blenders and retailers harder than the Mcclelland shut down. 501C VA Slices is the only one like and have enough. It sucks, but we’ll survive😀
I always liken it to Irish Flake. Not exactly the same, but close enough in flavor and strength that it scratches the itch. I do get that floral woody note in both.
I love 8 State. It took heat originally because it has orientals in it instead of being 100% burley. I think that was a stupid response. To me, it has the flavor of a classic American burley using only natural tobaccos instead of a bunch of toppings. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.
I've watched a few videos people saying what they're going to miss and what they're not going to miss. Most of the people that say they're not going to miss anything that is a Sutliff blends because that's not their favorite but we like such and such such and such. That's fine. I have a few Sutliff blends they're okay they're not my favorite.. but it's what Sutliff makes for other companies or brands My two favorite that are going to be going away is Edward G Robinson and, unless someone else picks them up, and Iwan Ries three-star blue both of them are manufactured by Sutliff. So you may not like Sutliff actual blends but it's all the rest of the stuff that they make that people are going to miss. And apparently STGs probably going to make sure nobody else gets to make those.
The Peterson blends aren’t going anywhere for now since they are already owned by STG, though I hear that they plan to streamline them within the next few years. As for SPC and the other small brands that use Sutliff tobacco, it doesn’t sound good for them. Hopefully C&D picks up manufacturing for them.
@ No, Leonard is the guy at STG who made the decision about the Sutliff/Macbaren portfolio. He is on pipesmagazineforums. He did a “Questions for LeonardW” thread and also commented on other threads in the forum about this. He is advising HH is completely done after everything is sold. He advised ODF sold less than 250lbs in Germany which is the second largest pipe tobacco market in the world per Leonard. He advised those blends aren’t profitable and don’t sell. He had more stats about other blends. The long and the short of it was the blends won’t be coming back out under different names or new blends under those names. They simply aren’t profitable to the degree STG wants.
It is sad indeed to see that much variety discontinued indeed regardless of our preference. I am only optimistic about sutliff blends being done at stg pehaps they can save these blends and make them better as they were unsmokable for me. I only will miss the hh line to be honest but thats life. Lets see what future hold in store
So I posted this on another channel… but I want to post here as well. Let the hoarding begin …let all attempt - and will be hard for many - to be mindful that you cannot take the product with you … to allow others to buy ! Btw even HH was not that good … we all acted like is good !! And to add… it will be ok…. There is A LOT out here that is available and is good !
I’m not acting like nothing I like the H.H. line and Bold Kentucky was one of my all time favorites, people should have had there favorite blends in there cellar because nothing is ever safe I bought most of my tins when they were at $10 or less on sale years ago
I agree with you on all fronts and this not a comment to you - I am just commenting on the general approach to scarcity and the commodity fetishism that is so ingrained in the consumer. Even my local store has increased the price in the product 3 folds… SAD.
I bought several tins of the original release as well and am still working through the first tin. The blend never really appealed to me, that weird vanilla-y marshmellow-y top note is a real turn off. I really wanted to like it considering the ingredients.

Thanks for the review.
I always buy a couple tins and smoked one fresh.
This year's version has been by far my favorite, but I've never had it aged.
Brian,
It’s an absolute shame. Thankfully we are blessed to have a lot of great blends . Blessings from Pa….

Your very welcome I know Per Is already working on new blends for the Chicago show
Looking forward to your list of tobacco alternatives as well. Not sure how you do it?
Eight state burly is delicious. 2021 was the first release of that small batch.
Good Morning and Happy Saturday my friend. I agree that discontinuing the HH blends is a surprise. I loaded up a flake of HH Virginia in Doran poker to watch this today. I was able to get five 50g tins of Bold Kentucky and three tins of ODF at my local B&M today. All eight were from 2021. Thanks for the heads up.
Beautiful Snow in the back yard !!
Great informative chat !
This buyout is infuriating.
Have a great weekend Brian.
Great video. I am looking over some of your pipes on eBay and they look great!

Good stuff, Brian! I enjoy this years 8 state Burley, but wasn’t around for any earlier ones, so not tried those

Eight state burley great. I just bought my first tin of ODF recently at its very good. I hope they keep it around even if they rebrand it

@@beans316No problem. Take as much time as you need.
No panic buying here. 90% of my cellar is Gawith. Love the 8 State as well. I have 2 tins worth left...😮 I hope they continue to make it. 🙏
Agree Randy the Dark flake unscented might not have the same components but to me it taste like Bold Kentucky
Thanks for the updates, hopefully you're right!
I was bummed but this morning I’m smoking C&D after hours flake and I was reminded that we still have C&D and they have a lot of really great blends.
Too cold there for me. I love Az. 👍😃☀️🌵
Had the same experience with the recent 8 State - fresh out of the tin I didn’t like it, jarred for a few months, now loving it.
Good Saturday Morning Brian. I’m a hopeless aromatic, but I not a fan of the Sutliff blends that survived. But as the song says, “I will survive”.
…do you enjoy long ‘smokes’ on the beach 🏖️ as well 🤣
Its interesting how many share the same experience with Eight State. It really improved for me after coming back to it.

My B&M has a few of these eight state burley tins left from 2024. I’m in Oregon though so the tins cost us $26-$28! Let me know if interested
Hey Brian. I believe I have some 2021 tins. The state doesnt blow up wind up my kilt. I will send you an email.

Crazy. Bengal Slices and Hearth and Home is going bye bye. I got 10 tins of Bengal Slice thank God. Guess I'll open a tin every 3 years. Lol
Why you are working on that list, do you know what compares to HH Rustica? I love that sour floral taste.
Hmmm not off hand but I know C&D makes some sour floral Burley flakes #1 through #5
