This Amazing EV is CRUSHING Tesla | Why the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is the best seller in China

- In this video, I cover the bestselling electric vehicle in China and explain its significance. You may have heard that the bestselling EV in China was the Tesla Model 3. You would have been right earlier in 2020 when the Tesla Model 3 was indeed the bestselling EV this year.
Subscribe: bit.ly/30Xo8c8
That changed this fall as the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV was the bestselling EV with over 20,000 units sold in October of 2020. Tesla Model 3 sold about 12,000 units in the same month. The HongGuang Mini EV has outsold Tesla Model 3 for three months in a row.
So what’s the big deal about the Hong Guang Mini EV? It’s not a Tesla competitor but competes at the lower end of the EV market. The Mini EV is a four-seat pure electric vehicle that’s got a simple boxy shape. It’s pretty tiny by US standards, measuring 2917mm in length or 115 inches. That’s about the size of the Smart ForTwo or Japanese Kei cars.
It’s made by a joint venture between SAIC Motor, Wuling Motors, and General Motors. Yes, GM. I hope GM is learning a lot by making this affordable EV in China.
The key thing to keep in mind is that the Hong Guang Mini EV only starts at $4,200 USD and the loaded version is $5,600. For comparison, the cheapest new EV for sale in the US is the MINI Cooper EV which starts at over $30,000. There is another Chinese EV company Kandi that is taking preorders for its Model K27. The K27 starts at $17,500 and has 59 miles of range on a 17.7 kWh battery. The K27 has already met regulations to sell in the US so it’ll be exciting to see how it performs.
The Hong Guang MINI EV has 27 horsepower (20kW) and 63 lb-ft (85 Nm) of torque. That sounds pretty anemic but the Mini EV only weighs 1470 lbs or 665kg. That’s a light vehicle.
The top speed is 62 miles per hour or 100 km/hour. That’s completely adequate for city driving.
It’s rear wheel drive so probably pretty fun to drive.
The New European Driving Cycle NEDC range is 75 miles (120 km) with the 9.3 kWh battery and 106 miles (170 km) with the 13.9 kWh battery. The NEDC is a bit generous when compared to the EPA so real life mileage will probably be closer to 60 miles for the smaller battery and 85 miles for the larger battery.
Charging time takes about 6.5 hours for the small battery and 9 hours for the larger battery on a slow charger.
The Hong Guang MINI EV has safety features like anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, tire pressure monitor, and parking sensors.
Here’s the Hong Guang EV getting crash tested. This doesn’t tell us much since it’s not like a US or European crash test. But hey, at least it didn’t crumple into pieces. Meeting international safety regulations will definitely add to the cost of the Hong Guang MINI EV if it makes it international. Wuling states that the MINI EV has 57% high-strength steel body.
The battery has low temperature pre-heating technology and insulation. The battery has passed 16 rigorous safety tests and received an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating. The battery functions can be monitored via a smartphone app.
It’s a box on wheels but cute in the same way that the Kia Soul or the retired Scion xB from back in the day.
So why are the Chinese buying the Hong Guang Mini EV like crazy? I think it’s the combination of the very practical design with lots of space inside but being tiny so it’s easy to maneuver and park. It has 26 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down. It’s also got solid specs for a city or commuter electric car. And of course, it’s the price. $4200 is amazing for a brand new EV.
THe Wuling MINI EV is only available in China but Wuling hopes to sell it abroad in the future. I would love to see it in the US. It’s more likely to be in Europe where small cars are more popular. Assuming it can pass worldwide safety regulations, I think there’s a market for affordable EVs like the Wuling MINI EV. What do you think of the Wuling MINI EV? Would you consider buying one if it came to your country? And at what price would you pay?

Don't you wish that electric vehicles were more affordable? The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is the best seller in China for good reason. It's simple, practical and affordable. Really a great city car. I hope GM can bring it over to the rest of the world. Let me know what you think of the Hongguang Mini EV.
yes. More affordable should be the future trend as we have seen with computers. Battery improvements are rapidly shifting costs down
@@DSvideo7777 Agreed. Can't wait for the floodgates to open. It's a matter of when, not if.
@Keith Gatlin You're right. It will cost a bit to get it to pass safety regulations for US/Europe.
But a lot of the increase in price will be erased with the tax credit for EVs.
@Keith Gatlin That's fair. Many people in the US probably feel the same way. But what if the Chinese product is 80% as good as the others but costs 50% of the others? Would it shift your decision making?
@Keith Gatlin Yes the batteries are the key to affordable EVs becoming mainstream.
No wonder this is best selling it’s affordable good quality ev car. This kind of affordable ev cars will be good for developing countries.
Agreed. It's a well-engineered EV for an amazing price. Would you buy it for yourself?
@@carsavvy4764 save money and someday I’m gonna buy a EV car for sure.
@Keith Gatlin I hope I’ll be able afford a good quality EV car.
this car would be good for a developed country as well. probably even better for a country like the us that can hopefully provide more charging stations
It costs 4200 bucks and has enough range and speed to get me to work and back.
It could be horribly made and I'd still want it.
Bring it here in the US, I need it for my daily commute. It's cheap, simple and efficient. 👍 Thanks for sharing.
Agreed. It would serve a lot of people's needs.
@Chen Uy Wuling has to meet safety standards but otherwise, there wouldn't be a reason why it can't be sold in US.
the Kandi is being sold in the US
@@carsavvy4764 much safer than bikes
the US needs a vehicle like this. It would sell millions to young people in the US like the old VW Beetle did
It would be nice to have affordable options. It's crazy that the average transaction price for a vehicle in the US in close to $40k. It's not sustainable.
Not just young people as there are still loads of gen x and boomers that are low income as well those just wanting a cheap city car who would be happy to buy one. Remove the back seat and voila cargo space.
@@MrKillswitch88 Too bad most automakers are too busy pumping out expensive and big SUVs with option packages that cost more than this little EV.
@@MrKillswitch88 we already have this car.. it is called the Chevy Spark
@@buzz86us2005 I disagree. This rig has more in common with a golf cart than an automobile.
I am not mathematician, But if the canadian gov grants me the $7000 subsidiary for this car, then they owe me $2000 when i get the car for free.
Now THIS is truly a environmentally friendly car!!
Why is environmentally friendly?
This is the way to go. I want this car with 150 mile range, top speed 80mph, air bags, slow charge on 120 volts in nine hours - 4 hours on 240 volts and AC. I'll give you $9,500.
There is a reason people drive 10 year old 100k mile cars. Affordability. This is amazing. If your going to have 2 cars with one ice car then you dont need 400 mile range.
This is spot on. The average age of a car in the US roads is 11.8 years. Not everyone can or want a $40k vehicle. As a second vehicle, this would be great for a lot of people.
I agree. I just bought a 2000 Saturn SL1 for $2100 with a measly 159k on it while my truck is down for the summer (ironically, fuel pump). I've put about $700 into it for tune-up, routine maintenance and cosmetic things (smoker's car, had to put new headliner and sun visors in it, along with other things to make it livable). When I got it, I was getting barely 25MPG, with the work I've done I'm current getting 35MPG on regular roads. I'd hit 40MPG or more easily if I was driving the highway every day. It also looks great because it's all plastic body panels and I've used it to experiment with what I've learned about waxing and buffing cars.
I know right now I can flip it for near what I got into it (minus routine tune-up stuff that you don't get back out of a car anyway) because it runs so good and gets hella good gas mileage. Then I'd get one of these EV's! :D
4 seater, 100km range, 100 kph top speed, damn, that's perfect for urban driving. it's size would also be perfect for wherei live (Bangkok).
The 2021 model will be available with 200km range as well.
Love it, US$5k and we buy two. Right now I drive a Suzuki Ignis: short, tall, reliable and fun.
I would be willing to pay $7K for it if it came to America. What is the stock symbol for this company?
That's a fair price for this EV to meet all the safety regulations in the US. It would be a great 2nd vehicle for a family do errands, short commute, etc.
As for the stock, it's traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange: Wuling Motors Holdings Limited (0305.HK)
@@carsavvy4764 Thank you.
@@carsavvy4764 I'm afraid its currently advertised range may diminish. Whay do I say this? The Kandi K27 was originally rated at over 100 mile before coming to the U.S.. Once it came to America, the EPA said that under U.S. driving conditions that that range was more likely to be around 58 miles. That's almost like cutting it in half.
What caused these shifts? American's thirst for faster acceleration. I don;t care so much about it and that's why I drive a Mitsubishi Mirage. Also, the 64 MPH speed limit had to be raised to 68MPH just to make Americans happy, also at the cost of mileage. And finally, the insertion of a "Sport Mode" which Americans are likely to keep constantly on the "On" position, whether they need it or not. lol
So, who knows.
@@fanfare100 Good post. The EPA rating system is generally 20-30% more difficult than the NEDC rating. So you're probably correct that the Wuling MINI would suffer a significant drop in EPA range if it were to come to the US. Plus, the safety regulations would require more reinforcements to meet US crash standards and raise weight.
I think 64 MPH is adequate for a car like this but you're right about American thirst for power and speed. We'd demand more and lessen range. Haha.
@@carsavvy4764 Here's a trick I learned from my parents who bought an earlier version of the K27 (they live in another country and had it delivered from China) which only topped at 64: They sacrificed a tiny bit of torque and acceleration and easily raised the speed to 68, simply by changing the wheels and tyres! It's simple geometry and physics. :D You can add that to the list of pro-tips. lol
this is the real way to go electric !
I'd take two!
Perfect for retirees for simple city commutes especially for the price, parking and environment although Australia is starting to tax ev’s any significant uptake
Thanks for your comment. I agree about it being a great car for retirees. It's simple and gets the job done. It'll have to be made safe enough for Australian standards but I bet there will be a good number of buyers if they can keep the low price.
This is a perfect car for Budapest , Hungary if there are 2 seatbelts at front (driver+guest) and with local service in case needed. I would immediately buy it.
Thanks for the comment. Hungary seems to be embracing electric vehicles. bbj.hu/business/industry/automotive/hungarian-electric-car-use-grew-most-in-eu
Low carbon footprint, and more efficient use of energy.
Amazing. I'd love it. I think pastel orange with white roof would look great. Definitely want one. Oh I gave up driving over 25 years ago. Now I want to re-start. Please export to UK. ☺️😍
It's the same size as the smart car running around in the US but I think this one is much better for the price and range, 109 miles is all you need for a city
Price is excellent; would like an airbag or two for the forward direction at least. Apart from that, Very Good. & GM too!?
Good news is that the 2021 model is getting airbags and only costs $4450 to start.
Interesting vehicle I wish they could make a American version to pass standards here and have 4 door's. I think it would sale well as long as they can keep the price around 10k or cheaper.
Upgrades for us market
1. 80 mph top speed
2. Climate control for battery to prevent degradation of battery
3. Trunk door opens higher to prevent head bump
4. Bluetooth / 3.5 mm auxiliary audio plug to radio receiver.
5. Fast charging option up to 80% of battery capacity. Slow charging after that to prevent damage to battery.
Reva electric in Bangalore made this 20 years ago but non realised its value and was made to die, nonetheless these small cars are still running and many still craving for a new model. Well done Wuling👍
How much is it with the espresso option?
I live in Ireland and i would buy one in a heart beat, if we are serious about saving our planet i cant understand why small cheap EVs are not available here, even with grants you are looking at around 25 to 30 thousand euro for a small EV (new) for something you really only use to get to and from work and going shopping. To me this car makes total sense and to be honest inside and out this looks like a great little cheap sensible car that everyone could afford. Great video, please keep us updated with this and other sensible small EVs.
Thank you Ciaran. Small EVs make so much sense in Europe and other densely populated countries. The good news is that the Chinese are innovating and making a lot of EVs and it's a matter of time before the rest of the world get to try them out.
As soon as you turn on the heater and lights the range halves.
@@Martian74 I'm sure the heater would lower range but doubt it would halve it.
But in such cold place in winter, it can not be last for 60 hp. It’s the nature of EV cars.
@@user-lc1qw1vs5s Good point, thank you.
I want one... or two.
In canada and would drive one, though it should offer the upgrade kit option for people to get it upto passing whatever is required and keep it super affordable still.
Any idea of how we can lean on the manufacturer to offer such a safety kit, and perhaps other mod kits for it and a line on each and every replacement part on demand?
Not currently. They are selling every one that they can make in China. It would take some investment to add structural reinforcements and airbags to make it compliant in North America. I think GM's too busy making $$$ in pickup trucks and SUVs to worry about getting this EV to us.
$ 4200 is an affordable price for this size of car that is good to commute to the office and also for other engagements for the evening. It's a sensible and practical product.
Good comment Sayed. Thank you.
@@carsavvy4764 You're welcome. Do shoe more such budget EVs to inspire people tk switch from IC engines. I'm a professional rally driver and automobiles is my passion. I don't mind to switch to EVs. I have always felt F1 racing is senseless sport that's why I've always loved car rallies. That really makes sense. If EVs replace IC engines in F1 it will revolutionize everything about the EVs
@@skmfaridi So true.
It looks pretty good quality wise. For 4-5K$ it fits in well in huge cities. Unfortunately in the USA the size would be too small. The smart car didn't do too well here because of the size
You're right. America is the land of pickups and large SUVs after all. It would be nice if GM would consider something less expensive than the Bolt.
I would buy one to use for short trips in town.
The point is will it float on water especially being a light vehicle
Excelente carro elétrico. Onde posso comprar no Brasil ?
i hate tiny cars but i could see myself having a blast in this little car as the cheap price makes it a non serious car, it would make popping down to the shops fun so yeah it be nice to see them come to New Zealand
Yep ... I'd pick one up as it is ... I'd even pay a couple of grand more for a little more styling ... but it's great. thanks for the video.
EV for school and supermarket runs, maybe even daily work commute. Just charge it everyday, like your smartphone.
Poor man's electric vehicle, I want one
I would say Eco EV.
"Poor man" nothing. Cars today are just overpriced. Base model cars with no features and manual everything still start around $25000. This car right here proves that inflation isn't solely responsible for the increased prices on cars, especially EV cars.
if you need go further longest yes you can do it just install genset at back
Some people would call this car unsuitable for highways; well that depends. if you’ve tried to drive to Toronto on a Monday morning, this car is too fast.
I wonder how this will do in Japan if it tries to compete with the ICE mini box cars there?
Great question. I don't think this car would do well because the Japanese only buy European imports (mostly German.) Plus this car would not qualify for the Kei car designation which saves a lot of money in insurance and registration fees because it's too wide.
can we buy it in USA?
I would buy one, however I'm worried about it's climb ability, I live in the hills and work downtown.
It would be practical here in the Philippines especially in Metro Manila where traffic during rush hours creeps to less than 20kph.
Thank you Ely for your comment. It would be practical in a busy city. Easy to maneuver and park. Are there some electric cars selling already in the Philippines?
@@carsavvy4764 none except perhaps imported by ones who have the money. It’s very expensive here and the transportation office still don’t have the way to regulate them. That’s why cars like these are more practical. We have electric mini buses plying selected routes and electric tricycles in Manila though.
@@elyserva7903 Thanks for the reply. I hope the Philippines would make it a priority to bring something like this to their country.

England here. If they brought only the fully loaded model (for economy) and sold it here for around £5000, maybe even as much as £6000 they would sell more than they could make. They would be everywhere. I would buy one, subject to me actually being able to drive it and not hating it.
I like it, it would be better with a more dense battery and rapid charging for the UK, to overcome the short range
Agreed. I think consumers will pay a bit more for a increased range and ability to rapid charge. If they would bring it over, I wonder the Chinese brand would be accepted. Maybe GM should call it a Chevy although Europeans probably don't associate quality with Chevy either.

Being a car dealer here in Sri Lanka you can sell a million cars here. Problem we faced here is that EV batteries they were not durable. If this EV battery can be charged 2000 times with the range of 200 kilo metres. With this competitive price.
I will definitely buy one .
I love it, if only they wold make a North American version or make a more expensive model with at least 200 miles of range, I would buy it
Thanks for the feedback, Simon. We need more affordable EVs in North America.
Good suggestion. North America does have an average longer grocery shopping distance than China. I guess the most used scenario right now is grocery shopping. It could hardly meet the need to go to the city outskirt for outing or similar purposes.
@@heinlich You're right about North American range needs being greater.
We don't really need 200 miles range in US. This is not a highway vehicle and would likely be scary on the interstate. A truck passing would blow it off the road.

For North America it's going to have to grow 20% (lots of big people here, I'm 6' 250#s) If it can reasonably seat 4 (not just kids in the back) big adults , get 150 to 200 km range , it would make a great city car especially if priced around 10k cdn. But as it sits, it will only be a nich car for city drivers . North American summers and winters are car killers especially electric cars, needing good heat and ac. One may be able to forgo the ac but it will need a good heater and be able to handle snow, slush and ice. Hot summer days(+30 deg C) in a city is hard on batteries as is -30 deg c . You're right. It can be done. I just hope they don't mark it up 3x like they did the K27. K27 is a $4200 car in China.
Obviously its not competition for Tesla, that would like saying a Golf is a threat to Porsche, but this will be a great car for the city, its cheap and very practical. This will be the ideal car for me to travel to work and back (about a 50km round trip) and if I can plug it in at work my boss pay the fuel ;)
Is cute, I would drive it. I just wonder if a 6 ft person would fit in it
I want one painted to look like a ladybug. 🐞🙂
