The only train I have ever felt sick on was a Class 220 Voyager! I got motion sickness! It made me rather dizzy as well! This was on a 9 minute trip! I survived 30 minutes on a Pacer from Cheltenham Spa to Bristol Parkway without feeling ill! So, by that logic replace the Voyagers with Pacers! Who wants to start Pacer Preservation?
The pacer is a great train! Even a new train can have issues. They don't understand what a proper train drive is. I've rode on the 142 several times and never have I felt cold or sick.
Well it not FGW's fault they are dirty - the passengers make them dirty, so have a go at the person sat next to you. 142s have been in service for a longer time now, but these will probably be replaced with 150s, 153s, 158s etc
the reason it is bumpy is because the track has jointed rails they might be nearly 30 years old but class 37s are running even though they are now 50 years old these just need refurbishing which is definatley cheaper than to build brand new trains
what annoys me is the fact that these southerners get all nice new trains, and up north we get their old scruffy pacers northern rail have refurbished these really well, the heating's fine, the seats are pretty comfy and are at a great reliable standard, refurbished or not, they were built 1985 and are still going strong. give me a 142 any day, 156s or whatever these days could be scrapped for all i care. LETS MAKE THE SOUTHERNERS COME UP HERE, THEY'D LOVE IT, PACER GALORE!
talking of bolts falling off lol i saw the air seal that connects the 142's together fall off the train. these things are falling apart. they are still in service and going strong i have not seen any new ones yet.......they rock around like mad.
i have found it to be about 75% of it is the track what is making the units bounce. if you get one of the units from Stockport to Manchester pic on the express line there is no bouncing at all untill you gover the points.
They've been sent back from the West Country BEFORE , and had to be replaced by DMU's from the very early 60's . The Manager of the London Midland Region said they were a mistake , they knew they were a problem , it was like going back 100+ years with 4 wheelers . Leyland had surplus bus bodies to be sold off , no Deregulated bus companies wanted to buy new buses so they were sold to BR to fatten Leyland up for Privatization .
Why is the ITV still call them 30 for, they are only 23 at most! We have them here in South Wales and nobody complanes about them. And ceternly not on T V. Even though in Wales they have been refurbished and most of the track is welded, we still don't get complains about them if they go on the Maesteg or Cardiff Bay lines which have jointed rails. Nor do we get complantes of them being cold and dirty.
Passenger numbers up 20% in one year, extra services being laid on - the pacer must be doing something right! I'd choose a fun, rickety ride on a Pacer than a hot, stuffy, cramped 'Pennydildo' any day!
I know. Its just devon just want everything best. Even though the track is welded rail that is well maintained on the valley lines, they don't think of lines like the Oldham loop from what I've seen is very rough. They think their isolted from the rest of the country and their the only ones that have them.
Two and a quarter hour journey from Plymouth to Dawlish on one of these gems last week. Should have been under the hour of course, but the suspension failed and the poor driver spent a stop-start trip to Ivybridge (at 30mph), pausing every five minutes to pump up the hydraulics! These are based on old Leyland National buses (all of which were withdrawn from road service years ago), and are clearly not fit for purpose any longer.
what the hell is it with people beeing so fussy. with 142s working on the line i often visit for enjoyment i sometimes get a 142 there. so they let in cold air do they? huh. that gap in the door was a ruler width! so they have bus seats, not bothered, pretty comfortable to me! as for people who travel on these trains like ben giblit (see video)he mustnt travel on them much because FGW s units are apperently the most reliable! dirty are they? that 142 looks far to clean to me. long live the 142s!
Erm there Not actually buses if they were they would have tyres and be on roads. they were built USING bus parts and Bolting them to a Freight Chassis. they are much better than the Modern trains of today as Modern trains are more intrestred in making the trains look nice and dont think from a passangers point of view at all unlike Ex BR DMU's that have more seats than Luxury.
these 142 are great :) your area will have to do with the rubbish left over as you dont have enough customers :) it is easier to put out 15 men and a dog than 300 peeps up here :)get over it :)p.s if you dont like it use your loca bus service
Haha, exactly 60791. 20 years of these trains and no one up here has ever complained of motion sickness. If they motion sickness they have about 30 or 40 different routes to chose from up here. Lifes a bitch MUHAHAHA
Nowt rong with 142,s tell your conductor to put the saloon heater on you wont be cold then. trust me i have spent a full working day living on the 142,s when we had no power in the depot and they are comfy.
Class 142s were introduced during BR's austerity measures yet they added up further costs in modifications. Now Angel Trains have no plans to modify them under the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) 2020 meaning they will have to be withdrawn.
Dont get me wrong I like Class 142s but the bolts and in turn the engines do occasionally fall off them, its a design flaw. A full "shedding of the engine" has happened on 3 occasions, most recently last year on the Manchester - Liverpool line IIRC
We will be lucky to have a train service because Angel Trains realises that they are to be replaced by a cascade of more suitable DMUs following displacement by electrification.
Refurb them to 144 standards and they've be fine for passengers, though the reliability still wouldn't be great. I've got to laugh with it saying it's not FGW fault. Didn't they allow 158s away before realising the only things available to replacement was the 142s they went North to replace!
i love the 142 and the people how said the could there not the 142 has heating wich cant be switch of yes thay do get hot in summer but in winter there quite nice also thay dont move any more tham othere trains it the track not the train you have crap track
I have to put up with these Trains daily with northern on the Nunthorpe to Hexham line and the Morpeth line stop moaning what about us in the north east there not that bad
The 142 pacer trains are honestly crappy nodding donkey trains because it is uncomfortable. On loan from Northern Rail to First Great Western December 2007 to November 2011. Short term loan until December 2008 are 142004/028/062/067/070 and long term loan until October 2011 are 142029/064 and 5 others until November 2011 are 142001/009/030/063/068. In the Barnstaple railway station who works at the ticket office is called Claire now wears glasses honestly said that the 142 pacer trains are horrible trains. Plenty of the 142 pacer trains honestly have gone to the scrapyard. The reason 142 pacers were on loan to Devon south west England is because to cover for other trains to be refurbished and repainted into the First Great Western livery. 142 pacers didn’t have it happen because they went back to Northern Rail by November 2011. HOORAY. Northern Rail and Transport For Wales finished the 142 pacers by May 2021 at the latest. Good. I should think so too. All the 142 pacer trains have a lavatory and standard accommodation only. They look like Leyland National buses. Also class 140,141,143 and 144 pacer trains look like buses. The pacer trains honestly won’t be coming back to be used on train companies part of British Rail anymore. They are a thing of the past.
well i would like to see you try and travel on them everyday!! i work on the things. when they first came out of the sheds they had moldy seats. we have loads of people travelling esp when a hst gets cancelled for example the other day the paignton got terminated at newton abbot and everyone on the hst got transfered to a two car 142. people like you up north are so stuck up you try travelling on a bus for three hours everyday to work??? you have no consideration at all typical.
The crappy 💩 2 car class 142 pacer trains 🚊 are very cold 🥶 because it feels like 👍 they is bits of gaps of air from the outside going into the 2 car class 142 pacer trains 🚊 are very shabby. They are bumpy trains 🚊 that go up ⬆️ and down ⬇️ everyday. The short term lease is 1 year from December 2007 to December 2008 and the long term lease is almost 😅 4 years from December 2007 to October/November 2011. I’m glad 😌 that class 142 pacer trains 🚆 aren’t in the southwest of England 🏴 used for GWR - Great Western Railway 🚃 is part of BR - British 🇬🇧 Rail anymore. Good 👍. It serves the crappy 💩 2 car 142 pacers right for being scrapped at the scrapyard. Rest in peace 🪦. Most class 142 pacer trains 🚊 are currently used for preserved railways 🚃 🚆 in England 🏴. 👍
142's are NOT 30 years old. They are Fun! they are about 22 years old. Nothing wrong with them.

They don't understand what a proper train journey is!
Stop moaning, they're awesome!
The pacer is a great train! Even a new train can have issues. They don't understand what a proper train drive is. I've rode on the 142 several times and never have I felt cold or sick.
Divine agreed
There is nothing wrong with a pacer
Yeah they’re my favourite train. Southerners love to complain. I understand why some don’t like them though.
Well it not FGW's fault they are dirty - the passengers make them dirty, so have a go at the person sat next to you. 142s have been in service for a longer time now, but these will probably be replaced with 150s, 153s, 158s etc

they might be nearly 30 years old but class 37s are running even though they are now 50 years old these just need refurbishing which is definatley cheaper than to build brand new trains
The Pacer is only rolling about because the track has a lot of joints in it, which causes Pacers to have that characteristic roll.
what annoys me is the fact that these southerners get all nice new trains, and up north we get their old scruffy pacers northern rail have refurbished these really well, the heating's fine, the seats are pretty comfy and are at a great reliable standard, refurbished or not, they were built 1985 and are still going strong. give me a 142 any day, 156s or whatever these days could be scrapped for all i care.
LETS MAKE THE SOUTHERNERS COME UP HERE, THEY'D LOVE IT, PACER GALORE!
TheIntercityhst yeah and there old buses on freight cars. I would expect them to be bumpy
talking of bolts falling off lol i saw the air seal that connects the 142's together fall off the train. these things are falling apart. they are still in service and going strong i have not seen any new ones yet.......they rock around like mad.
What is that maniac on about, 142s are awsome
i have found it to be about 75% of it is the track what is making the units bounce. if you get one of the units from Stockport to Manchester pic on the express line there is no bouncing at all untill you gover the points.

Yeah and why does age matter that much anyway - the HSTs are probably the oldest trains in mainline usage but are still by far the best.
Why is the ITV still call them 30 for, they are only 23 at most! We have them here in South Wales and nobody complanes about them. And ceternly not on T V. Even though in Wales they have been refurbished and most of the track is welded, we still don't get complains about them if they go on the Maesteg or Cardiff Bay lines which have jointed rails. yep. ex Northern Spirit ones are great! And if they are dirty, that's the passengers, not FGW!
The class 142s were built by the Leyalnd Bus compnay between 1982 and 1985 so yes they aren't 30 years old just yet!
Passenger numbers up 20% in one year, extra services being laid on - the pacer must be doing something right!
I'd choose a fun, rickety ride on a Pacer than a hot, stuffy, cramped 'Pennydildo' any day!

In Scotland instead of 142s, we have more 156s instead.
that is ubbish. they are one of the best trains around. KEEP THE PACERS

I agree 101%! I'd ride on these 24/7 given the right oppurtunity! ;)
142s are ok. i have been on some im the past the only thing that there are right on the report is that the inter needs up dating.
so what if there made out of buses bits. there better then a freaking pendolino and there rested of these modern units but to gether.
i have used 142 frequently...
they were on our network for a good 20 odd years :) sure there bumpy but its a good dmu:) with a nice leyland bodywork:)

Lol pacers - aren't they getting replaced by 150s once London Midland get the 172s?
Haha, exactly 60791. 20 years of these trains and no one up here has ever complained of motion sickness. If they motion sickness they have about 30 or 40 different routes to chose from up here. Lifes a bitch MUHAHAHA
Nowt rong with 142,s tell your conductor to put the saloon heater on you wont be cold then. trust me i have spent a full working day living on the 142,s when we had no power in the depot and they are comfy.
153 would be better for a small line
Class 142s were introduced during BR's austerity measures yet they added up further costs in modifications. Now Angel Trains have no plans to modify them under the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) 2020 meaning they will have to be withdrawn.

A full "shedding of the engine" has happened on 3 occasions, most recently last year on the Manchester - Liverpool line IIRC
I travel on 142s reguarly and they are often better, as they have decent ventilation and are very open
We will be lucky to have a train service because Angel Trains realises that they are to be replaced by a cascade of more suitable DMUs following displacement by electrification.
Well we have to put up with these in wales!

These trains r the best, 150/153 and all the other spinters are very unpleasant!
Nah the 158s are pretty comfortable and fast.
THEYRE NOT 30, but they're the best!
the only reason its bumpy is because there is only four wheels per carriage
Joshua knight yeh and there old buses on freight car bottoms
Silly southerners. Get your facts right and theres nothin wrong with these trains. yes theyre old and unreliable but theyre fun! haha
Their a sensitive lot down here.. Dunno what your track is like ooop North, the Barnstaple line track dates back to the war. The Booer war..... :o(
Or is it a case of middle class southerners moaning? or a slow news day (H)?
God What obsession does ITV have with "30 year old". They are not fuckin 30!!! The 150's are nearly as old, and they don't make any fuss about them!!
Bloody hell stop moaning up north we've had them for 20 years try going through edge hill on one
i love the 142 and the people how said the could there not the 142 has heating wich cant be switch of yes thay do get hot in summer but in winter there quite nice also thay dont move any more tham othere trains it the track not the train you have crap track
don't here us complaining in south wales either!
we've got 143s too
They literally got rid of them in Devon this week. Literally no rolling stock investment here unlike heavily subsidised TFW
@@chazbaz4519 my comment was 12 years ago lmao
you really annoy me grahamgregson you come down and have a look and see how many people actually travel on these 142s then you will see the problem.
jeez went down to dawlish warren one year, fine!! but the next year... WTFWTF 142's :| Very bad
you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear!nodding donkeys are the worst trains ever built!
I have to put up with these Trains daily with northern on the Nunthorpe to Hexham line and the Morpeth line stop moaning what about us in the north east there not that bad
