Wow. It’s been an incredible five (?) years of glorious, glorious sanding. Amazing to see you now pretty much ready to sail! Bon voyage 😀
he will be coming to see you for a cheese sandwiches 😂👊
Aha, you're hiding here are you!
Cheeky! Good to see you here as well!
I watched your boat tour earlier today. Did you see that lovely clear bowl on the water separator?
Small world✌🏻
To me this episode signifies the end of an era, which leaves me with feelings of happiness and relief on one hand and somewhat sad on the other.
Now I expect that Sail Life will live up to its name by providing us with interesting sailing adventures to enjoy plus the occasional repair sessions.
I think many of us will be watching to see how well all the electronic gizmos play with each other.
Hi Guys, we have a FP-5000i generator identical to yours; it has been great.
A couple of cautions, it will shread the impeller in seconds if raw water is accidentally left closed; there are no second chances. Thankfully the pump is made by Johnsons who charge around $13 for spares (part 09-808B-1). We carry three! Secondly, I accidentally filled the cylinder with water through my own stupidity in flushing engine with fresh water during service. After service the engine locked blowing starter motor fuse. Water was easily ejected by removing cylinder head glow plug, attempting to start engine then refitting glowplug. Thirdly, the raw water out pipe connects to brass barb on heat exchanger. Heat exchanger vibrates with the engine so the raw water outlet hose must have some flex as without it, the hose barb will fatigue then break off; it happened to us.
Congratulations on your 444th video! Cheers.
Don't stop making videos , my Sunday mornings won't be the same without you .
Another random internet dude super happy for you. Thank you for sharing your journey.
A lot changed for me since my last sailing adventure. I got hacked and lost my old youtube, and all the people I subscribed to. But I also got away from sailing activities, and today I just felt like returning to the sailing arts. I'm so happy to newly sub to Athena with my new youtube account. Be blessed.
No more "Oh Glorious Sanding"! Time for "Oh Glorious Sailing"! Congrats! Athena looks great!
Awesome following this journey. I started watching when I was working for the UN in Syria during the war and it saved my sanity; I could tune out to the bad stuff going on around me and watch you achieving glory (sanding) and spiffyness every week. Well done you two; may you have fair winds and following seas.
I wish you would have shown the entire installation of the genset in detail like your old videos! I learn so much when you go into detail.
I believe things should return to normal after they land in the UK. Right now it's a mad thrash before they have to leave the country.
Give the man a break! Let him slowly go back to being human…
You are a very lucky man you found a wonderful 1st mate. It is finally time to box up the sanding equipment and set out on your journey. You have brought endless entertainment to my life for the past 1/2 decade and I'm sure that will continue. Thanks for tackling projects I will more than likely never attempt myself but after watching your positive attitude towards the unknown I feel like I could. I wish you safe passages ahead. Thanks
Congratulations on reaching such an epic milestone - not many people have the stoicism to execute such a lengthy project - well done!!
The South coast is very expensive, Scotland’s weather can be brutal. Have you considered the east coast’s river Orwell? There are many Marine businesses that supply services as well as boat builders - Spirit Yachts (all wooden yachts), Gunfleet and Oyster yachts. Suffolk Yacht Harbour and Fox’s Marina each supply a wide array of services with many companies supplying services.
If you make it to Suffolk, you wont be disappointed with what is on offer! Further to this, it’s primarily a yachtsman’s area.
The river Orwell is also set in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), so it’s a great place to enjoy some down time and to see the best the county has to offer!
I can't believe it's been 5+ years already. WOW! Still looks like there is a ton of stuff to do before leaving. I hope we can get a final tour of the boat 🚢 before ya'll head out. Stuff like did you get the hinges on the refrigerator top made and installed? Or the tank underneath it up and working? Or all the chain ⛓ plates 🍽 covers on? Or the rewiring done on the cook top and oven done? Or all the rest of the work in the head done?
But here is an idea for your cabin sole. us vinyl flooring. It is water 💧proof and is very durable. Take a look at lifeproof very good flooring.
Ok untell next Sunday Morning 🌄 Aloha and Mahalo from the Big Island 🏝 of Hawaii 🏝
I’ve run the exhaust out thru the stern which has eliminated back flow while sailing. Our boat tends to rise up with a following sea which helps greatly and we have never experienced any issues with our Panda mounted off of the centerline. Good luck as you set out.
Fair winds Mads and Ava!
We are also cutting the lines and heading south about a couple of thousand miles to escape winter in the US Northeast after a somewhat extensive electronics refit of our own. Sea trial on the fly for us too, although we got to test out much of our new systems riding out two major tropical storms out on anchor.
I am hoping that you chose the canals route because I'm simply love canals and would be thrillet to see you two document traveling through them as you move towards your next destination.
I hope your alternator issues are easily solved. It lools like you are very close to fixing the alignment issue. If you do end up reinstalling the stock alternator be sure to check if you need to adjust your charge controller settings so that it doesn't overwork the little guy and burn it up .
Good luck with your trip south. Are you heading to any particular southern port (Texas, Louisiana, Florida)?
Florida--ish. W spent most of last winter on a ball in Vero beach due to COVID-19. We don't want to deal with island BS so we are probably going to stay in the USA where our movements are not going to be locked down, especially in Florida. We are in it for the long haul, in our fourth year full-time so there are many other years in the future. I'd rather not go back to Vero again all year, someplace we are able to be on our own hook yet be close to pump outs and water. A nice grocery store and other cruisers to hang out with would be nice too.
When you get to the UK don't forget that what you call cans are jars and what you call chips are crisps. If you ask for chips to will get what you call French fries.
Being bummed is something totally different
Well Sam Holmes is heading for the Caledonian Canal from the west. Maybe you will do a collaboration post. Whatever happens, it will be exciting to see you both underway. Congratulations.
It's also fun when Eva is more involve in the process and the videos. Thank's
From boat building, now to sailing and cooking. Cant get better than this.
Athena just looks so good! Absolutely epic rebuild. Cant believe were on to sailing! So exciting.
Take 3 more belts than you think you might need. Also, carry a “jump pack” just in case your battery dies and you don’t have extra power. Most people say they don’t need them… until they do. I hope you have a safe journey and may your sails be filled with the wind of the direction you want to go!
Wow, the silence is deafening while that generator is running! LOL
I'm about done with DIY. I want to see some sailing!
Enjoying your cooking as well, Eva. Suggestion: Muesli. Invented in Switzerland, I think. 1 part oats, 1/4-1/2 part dried fruit of choice, 1 part Greek yogurt or kefir, 1 part milk of choice, chill for 12 hours (overnight) and enjoy. May be made a few days in advance. Covers several passage breakfasts with a really healthy, raw treat.
Mads i have been faithfully watching and learning with you since before you met Athena!! Thanks for all your hard work, its made me better for sure! Cheers for what’s next!!
The perfect solution to your UK destination sounds a lot like a full lap of the UK is the answer.
Lots of different places to explore, South Coast, Norfolk Broads, Scotland, Scottish Islands, Wales, Ireland.. lots to see!
Dear Mads and Eva, congratulations on this milestone. What a journey this refit! What perseverance Mads! And what a special ship it has become! You have started a huge final sprint together. I hope you enjoy the time ahead and have a safe journey. Paul
Fair winds! I can’t believe you have finally reached this milestone. I have loved watching all along.
Fair Winds, Ava and Mads! You have given us, your viewers, an amazing gift of information, grit, and humor. Your international audience was treated to the occasional Danish lesson and expats like me were reminded of our homeland. I look forward to following your adventures with a little less DIY fun (sigh) and a lot more sailing (yay!).
For things without templates: Put some painters tape on the back side, and apply some paint (or anything that'll transfer to another surface easily) then just press to the wall. You can peel the painters tape off, and you'll have a painted mark of where you need to cut. Great trick to make really precise cuts for electronics.
I have that same rainbow seat cushion that I purchased at World of Outlaws race in Hagerstown, MD.
Somebody said life is what you make it. Following what you've made so far I think you're got a great future. Fair winds Mads and Ava.
Congratulations on completing on getting to a point where you can sail!
Fair winds
And I'm sure your Mom is watching every video... and is super proud! :)
Texas Taco Salad, we use this when we have lots of driving to do and want a one dish meal to eat. Make taco meat like normal use the shredded taco cheese and cut up two avocados and three Roma tomatoes, you can add white or yellow onion if you like cook enough rice for two times two (four meals) next when ready to eat we add sour cream or ranch dressing. Place the rice in each bowl layer in the meat and crunch up either Tostitos or just taco chip or plain Doritos in each bowl to liking add cheese and nuke the bowls until the meat and rice is hot (stick your finger down int the middle of the layers) add more chips if desired I crunch mine up small. Next add onion and Roma’s and Avocado mix and eat you can add a little or a lot ranch and Sour Cream how ever you like. Store the leftover meat in a ziplock bag and chill same with the rice. Oxygen makes things go bad so press out all the air and zip it I would mix the rice and meat leftovers equally so it’s just a matter to spoon it out when your hungry! Bon appetite!
Safe travels guys. I’m excited to follow Athena and her crew on their adventures
Come up to the Caledonian canal and we’ll cross paths 😁. I just started it from the west. The landscapes are amazing up here. 🏴
One of the best no nonsense sailing channels Sam Holmes Sailing.
Cruising Worldwide on a Cape Dory 28, a solid pocket cruiser.
Sam, you are the best!
I hope my two fav DIY’ers link up!
Sam knows best, it has to be Scotland 🏴
Heading up that way tomorrow as well 😁
Yes! The cross-over I never knew I wanted.
Fantastic to see on Marine Traffic that you are on your way! Fair winds and look forward to hearing your safe arrival in the UK! 🙂👍
My 2 cents is Scotland. I had the pleasure of living there in the early 90s and it reminded me of the olden day USA. England was always the more modern Euro-style place and Scotland was the slower paced, more trusting people. The nice thing was, I could order parts from London in the morning and they would be at my house near Aberdeen in the afternoon, via regular mail. That was unheard of in the states.
Hi. Take 2 sapphire belts with you to the alternator. And you should also take a solar panel that can be tied to the deck if needed. It once saved me.
You never showed us the finished head. The work you guys have done is perfectly beautiful. I only wish the videos were longer!
Good luck ,and safe passage. I have watched you ever since you got Athena. I love the transformation the boat has taken keep up the great content and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
We are following you on RUclips for years, I must say that we are very happy for you guys both that finally you off to sailing on Athena and also very sad for ourselves in the meantime as we'll miss out on our Monday morning comfort programme. Good luck!
If you decide to come to South England and you need a quick guide in Portsmouth for food and drinks perhaps to the famous Dockyard and what not, we would be privileged to take up on that quest.
All the bests
Hi Mads fit a manual gate valve in the gen exhaust just below the unit that you open before starting or use just in bad weather, old school but effective.
Holy carp! RIP anyone with headphones at 9:54. Love how far you have come though. Great job!
What a milestone. Not only are you ready to get off the dock you have an amazing first mate to share your life’s journey with you. Good luck, fair winds! (Note my boat does not handle following seas well so I’m not wishing you a following sea.).
Holy blown eardrums from the multitool!!!
Cushions in saloon look great!
*"So yeah. We're done!"*
Hmmm, all well done Mads & Ava. Thx for yrs with fun and inspiration.
So, god reise og pls, dere må gi oss oppskriften på de kjøttkakene!
When servicing the Generator don't forget to disconnect the auto start .
I would think they would have a kill switch on the enclosure or something like that.
Mini quiches for when under sail! Excellent idea!
Looking forward to seeing you sailing south of England have good weather for this time of year.
Hey Mads, what happened to you generator? it disappeared under mysterious circumstances, could you please elaborate what and how? Because i might be likely to make a diy generator as well, and would really like to know what pitfalls there are. Your generator not going onboard might be one of those pitfalls that i need to take into consideration.
Otherwise, keep up the good work!
It was a freaking overengineered, outdated and obeese Frankenstein of a solution. Good decision to buy something that is fit for the job.
i asked about this in a previous video, apparently on patreon he said it was huge and didn't fit through the doors
@@wasilewski8421 Thanks for that explanation. I was wondering what had happened to the "Itty bitty Perkins"
@@wasilewski8421 Thank you, it's a bit sad that it happened, and Mads could probably work around it if he had more time. But given the situation, this was the best choice he could make at the moment. I noted in my tip's and tricks book: if you make a generator, make sure it fits into your boat, or build your boat around the generator :)
I was wondering about the little iddy biddy perkins as well, it must have been a big breakip as its like it never existed now being referred to as 'the diy soltion' RIP iddy biddy perkins
I've always wondered how the provisioning and in general sustenance while under way happens, so much obliged to Ava for going over some of that more mundane but obviously utterly vital preparation. Looking forward to the sail video, good winds!
Fair winds ! If you decide North, Orkney Islands are fascinating.!
So excited! You will love, love, love every minute! Happy sailing wherever you end up. Much love and thanks for all the entertainment xxx
For the Alt see if you have any play with the top mounting bracket, if not you could grind out some slots in in the bolt holes to give you more play forward and aft. To help bring the pulley alignment to spec
I think you two should look into meeting up with Rhys and Niamh on Zora while you are in the UK. A collab episode between the four of you would be awesome!
Edit: I also would advise looking into an isolation valve rated for the temps of diesel exhaust. A standard gate valve made of stainless should be OK. If you put it directly at the genset exhaust it would eliminate the heeling issue as it would block any water trying to get to it. It would also mean you can't use it sometimes, but better to have an optional isolation than not.
You two are amazing. I’m glad my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting you and Eva In Los Angeles during a meetup.
Great to see Athena on the water and sailing. I'm sure I'll enjoy your sailing videos just as much as the DIY ones. Regarding your destination, why not split the difference and come to Scarborough? It's just about due west of Denmark so it should be an easy sail, given that the winds in the North Sea seem to be mostly Northerlies nowadays. We've got a beautiful harbour and marina and I for one would be only to happy to make you welcome!
Top of the fridge is looking beautiful now that you've finished it!
Save journey guys! Looking forward to the next 5 years with you guys here on RUclips :)
Mads, you are such a tease! You show us the beautiful top for your fridge but do not open it up so we can see the hinge setup in all of its spiffiness!
I can't believe you are finished. What an adventure. This has been an amazing video series. Congratulations.
Put a seacock on the exhaust through-hull, that'll put a definite end to the possibility of siphoning when sailing heeled... but it looked like your cooling water exits through the transom? If so then it is quite possible the outlet will never submerge. A seacock might still be wanted in the case of breaking waves from astern - which can throw themselves down rear facing openings.
You would love the Caledonian canal...and an excellent chandlery in Inverness..Gael force...
And a decent marina too!
Great watch again 👍🏴
Mads/Ava
If you get to head across to Scotland and then through the Caledonian Canal it would be worth your while calling in at Caley Marina which is just south of Inverness. They are very good engineers, and Jamie has a lifetime of experience with Volvo engines if you should have any snags to try and resolve.
Fair winds
Made a way to stop the water is a free flowing check valve that will slam close if water is pushed against it but not hard enough for the exhaust to push past it.
Come to the River Orwell. It's warmer and drier than Scotland and cheaper than the south coast. Fox's is a fine yard and you can live onboard out of the water. London is an hour on the train. Stansted is 90 minutes by coach. And I'll buy you both a pint in Pin Mill's famous Butt and Oyster!
Come to the south coast, chichester marina, I'll take you out to dinner!
Wow. This is really getting exciting! Been waiting for years to see you get to this point. Best of luck to the both of you as you prepare for departure!
You had a quick mention on sailing channel gone with the wynns around 1.50 in the most recent video
They will be using butyl tabe on hatchs
Just wanted you to know 😄
Going to have to watch the wyns to get my itch fix now 😱👍😁
Safe travels Mads. I was on Athena when you did the meet up in Kirkcudbright, Scotland 5 years ago so hoping your travel takes you to Scotland 😉 Perhaps get to see the ‘new’ boat… Raymond
Mads if you end up sailing to Scotland there are some really good boat yards in the Firth of Clyde area. I can recommend Sterling Yacht Services on the Isle of Bute. I have had excellent work done by John Sterling and his team. In addition to them is Silvers Marine in the Gareloch. Kip Marina and Largs Marina are both Excellent. If you end up in Scotland let us know and we can catch up for a meal and a beer.
All your hard work has paid off!! Good luck on your first voyage!
If you come to south of England head over to Cornwall, plenty of places to do your work and a nice little sail over to the Isles of Scilly as well.
The boat is looking spiffy inside. A video tour seems in order.
Hey Max.. put a swing valve on the exhaust pipe of the gen set so when your under sail it won't transfer water through there. just trying to help.
Good luck guys! Can’t believe it’s been 5 years.
I came to the show "late" - when the refit of Athena's interior was in full swing. Or should I say, the first refit, before discovering the rot. Recently I watched an early video of Mads nervously declaring his intent to give live-aboard life a good go.
There is an impressive narrative here, for someone keen on editing - from the first tentative steps on Obelix, to getting Athena, to the first refit works, the fall of discovering the rot and the labours to rebuild her better than you probably intended when you first got her. All capped off with the trail line ..
"Now, the adventure REALLY begins"
Good going…. Now for the sailing and maintenance DIY.. to bad about the baby Perkins…. That was a cool project.
Bon voyage! Safe travels. That counter in the galley is looking super spiffy.
Made also use a good straight edge and set it against the pulley faces to check for proper alignment.
Fair winds guys hope to see you in Scotland !!!
Wow, what a major momentous occasion!! Leaving the dock and setting sail - it always feels great - but for the two of you this will be very special. Fantastic!!
Mads, good luck with the sketerschrams, motorshrodes, high and low pressure doxtrils you installed along with your doo dads Fair winds and following seas
OK... I'll be the bad guy: Great decision to deep six the Perkins-Frankenstein genset and replace it with the Fisher Panda! With an 21st Century sailboat and all the electrical doo-dads you have installed, it's great to see a nice new well-designed power source you can rely on. Plus, it's way "mo-quiet." Beautiful work. And killer food prep by Ava. I am now hungry. :)
I bet it is more efficient with fuel use as well.
AWESOME!!! The journey begins! I will be waiting for the next video as always, can’t wait to see the boat sailing and hear about the feedback on how the remodel is functioning underway. May the spray be in your face and the weather warming as the venture continues!
Great job on the generator installation Mads, Ava your food looked yummy, let us know how it taste. So excited to see you guys are almost ready to cast off and get to sailing. Mads, I know that having multiple redundancies for your power needs is nice but don't let that stop you from making your cast off date.
Wishing you both the best, sea you!
Cross over to felixstowe, lots of marinas on the river orwell and decent pubs, then decide if you want to go north or south
Good luck to you both. You have worked hard to get Athenal ready to sail the world. Well done. Ian Langley. New Zealand currently under lock down in Auckland.
Fair winds and following seas! Look forward to hearing of your safe arrival somewhere in the UK.
At some point you should wire in a button in the engine compartment to replace the emergency screwdriver bit. Mostly as a backup on a partial electrical failure with need to start the engine. Trying to find the screwdriver and get the screwdriver in the right place in foul weather... Like having plugs for a hull feedthru next to the feedthru the preplacement of emergency measures reduces the potential impact of any unexpected event.
Fair winds, following seas and safe travels!
I have been watching three different boats be built/refited over the last few years. Athena, Seeker and Tally ho. Its great to finally see two of them ready sail. Great job guys and safe travels
Wow 5 years, your content is awesome cant wait to see you guys sailing. Yeeewww!
Wow! What a technology-filled boat!! We wish you fair winds!
Good luck with the new generator, I hope they have fixed the issue where the engine ingests cooling water into the cylinder when the engine stops. This causes the valves and cylinder to rust.
Simple easy way to stop water from getting in when heeled id install a valve as close to the motor as possible.. Can even be an electric valve if you don't want to do it manually. And don't worry about forgetting it closed, the motor wont start if exhaust is blocked and you cab always put a label on the control panel to open valve before starting
Ava, tell us more about what you cook when onboard... thanks!
Like others, I have been following long for several years, and I am very happy for you two!
Enjoy the journey, these are the times in your lives you will never forget.
For the generator exhaust and protection from water backing up into the generator when heeled over. Google inline marine exhaust check valve. They are not cheap, but they are a pittance compared to the cost of a new generator.
I had a customer with a fisher Panda bring an extra coolant temp sensor and also the other sensor as they are not the standard what you would find on Volvo/Perkins/yanmar they are a very good genset aha I believe the alternator is liquid cooled and there is a place where you can add oil on the alternator bearing very special I had never seen it before in my life as a service engineer.
