Another time my own sister's animals broke a barbed wire fence and chewed his maize beyond the fence for almost a whole day.The person she had left to tend the animals left them and went on his missions.
Tonje's security team took away the animals into their custody awaiting the owner who in this case was my sister.
Later in the day, my sister received the information about how her animals had strayed into his neighbor's plantation and subsequently destroyed his crops. This matter brought a lot of confusion to her not knowing how to approach it having not met Tonje in any forum.
Eventually she decided to visit Tonje's farm the following day to seek mercy upon this matter. You can imagine this situation. The maize destruction was indeed big, big enough to cause worry.
She arrived and was informed that Tonje was inside and she had to therefore wait outside for awhile. She was there with the worker who had neglected his duty, just incase the punishment was to be caning.
"The 30 minute wait seemed like 30 day" she told us.
Then suddenly Tonje came out and she definitely knew that hour had come to explain why the destruction and "showing cause why"
She stood up and approached him apologizing in tears. Then Tonje asked his security where the animals are informing her that he was aware of that crime. He released the animals to her and told her to be the guard of that wing of his farm as an immediate neighbor. No further charges she wouldn't believe it.
I was in Isiolo in 1996, when Tonje ascended to the army general post.I remember tribalism was a great deal. You even remember how KGGCU was branded. But when this great man took the mantle every soldier, regardless of tribe I met had this to say."Tonje is a guy that understands what a Kenyan soldier has to undergo.
