Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. Thanks for stopping by.
That's one of my favorite books for picking a random fly to tie. I've never tied a yellow jacket, but I'll give it a go!
Thanks Troy! It is a fun book to flip through. :-)
A yellow jacket pattern? That would absolutely tear up my local home waters! Thank you for sharing! Tight lines! 😎🎣
Heck yeah! And you know this will be a multi-species fly. I could see panfish feasting on any kind of bee patterns. :-)
Good morning Matt. ☕️time from the cool not frigid north. Got home safely and had great weather for travelling. Actually got to stay in the camper enroute. I did winterize in Helena because we are going to be in the low 20’s for a couple days this week. Enjoyed the pattern. Nothing I appreciate more than watching a yellow jacket sinking in the water. If a fish eats them all the better. We have lots of yellow jackets up here so definitely going to give this one a try. Take care and have a great week.
Thanks John! Glad you made it home safely. But ohhh... 20 degrees is still a bit chilly! We've been hitting almost 80 mid-day around here. It's been quite nice. I think our winter is officially over, but hopefully spring will stick around a little longer. :-)
Terrific pattern! Some years the yellowjacket wasps are terrible around here. Nothing I like to see more than them floating down a river about to become fish food! I will definitely give this a try!
Hahaha! I hear you. Nothing like riding over an underground nest with a mower to make you hate them even more. :-)
Thanks for tieing this pattern matt. I fished a bee pattern many moons ago, and did quite well, so I know it will catch fish. Enjoyed watching. 👍
Appreciate it Jim! Hope you're doing well my friend. :-)
Seen these but never tied one. Very cool looking fly. Thx Matt and get better/rested. God bless
Appreciate it Clyde!
Just this morning I waved off a yellow jacket. I’m sure this can work on the lakes and streams out here. Thanks!
Oh man, I've been spraying the hornet (or maybe they're wasps) nests around here. Not looking forward to fending these off all summer!
Nice fly Matt. Thanks for sharing!
Appreciate it Daryl! Hope you've been well my friend. :-)
Good looking 🪰👍 Thanks Matt
Appreciate it Rusty! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
That is a cute fly. I don’t consider live yellow jackets cute, but this fly is cute & really has that buggy look leading to successful fishing. Well tied, Matt.
Haha! Thanks Bob. It is kind of "cute" with that big dubbed head. But I agree, yellow jackets, or any svelte wasp/hornet like stinging insect is pretty scary. :-)
Good Morning Sir Matt, I'm really like this bee pattern, and I'm definitely going to try this thank you so much
Go for it Edward! You know the Texas panfish would eat this thing up. :-)
Cool looking fly, Matt
Never thought about a yellow jacket. I need to give it a whirl
Thanks for the video
Appreciate it Dave! Hope you're doing well my friend. :-)
@@SavageFlies all good, except for the weather on the weekends
A little too wet
Great looking fly my friend ty
Appreciate it Wayne!
Morning matt nice bee pattern. Here in pa hatches are ahead of schedule so terrestrial patterns will be more important this year tks 😊
I hear you Burt! I think the March Browns and Blue Duns came early down here in Maryland too. Of course my favorite caddis have been in and out almost all year. :-)
Good bee.pattern. Thanks.
Appreciate it John! Thanks for the my friend. :-)
Fun tie...👍
i will tie this wasp/bee pattern and give it a go this summer.✅😎👍
Cool! Good luck my friend. :-)
Bee patterns work really well in my area for panfish.
Oh yeah, I imagine panfish would feast on any bee that finds itself in the water. :-)
That’s a good pattern. I wonder if black and yellow foam glued together alternately and shaped like the wasps body would make it a high floater, while still using the elk hair and hackle. I seen a tyer from the check republic do life like flies like that several years ago. Thanks for the pattern. Cheers!
Yes! I think I've seen that one too Ed. He made some amazing lifelike patterns. I don't think I'll ever get to that skill level, but who knows. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime. :-)
For some reason I figured trout won't eat Bees because of getting stung. Maybe not lol!!! I dig the book and this pattern.
I've always wondered about that too! I think they probably don't have many nerve cells in their mouths so they might not even feel it. :-)
Good morning Matt☕️☕️
How did it go Saturday, I don’t think I have every fish a bee but time to start 😉👍
I didn't make it out! Friday night I went to put my new trolling motor on the kayak and it didn't fit! I had to order a mounting bracket so hopefully it'll be in before next weekend. I'll make it out though. And someday I'll come home with a big 10-pound snakehead. :-)
I like the pattern. How different would it perform if you didn't do the hackle & used more thread to create a head? Thank you for sharing.
You know, I'll bet it would fish pretty much the same. The dubbing head just gives it a little more "meat" to it I'd say. Of course it does make it a little clunky looking for a dry fly. :-)
@@SavageFlies Thank you for replying & your thoughts.
Wow! Cool bee, looks like a McGinty morphed into a caddis 🐝🪰I like bee/wasp patterns. I always wanted to tie a wasp pattern on a smallish kahle type hook. Curved abdomen under the surface with the point ready to sting! So how'd your 🐍head fishing trip go? Thanks Matt 👍
Yes, the McGinty! That's probably the only bee pattern I've ever fished. I can't remember ever catching anything with it. But that's nothing new. I can not catch fish with any number of patterns. :-) Regarding my snakehead fishing... it didn't happen last weekend! I went to put my new trolling motor on the kayak, and I needed a motor mount. So that's on order and I'll be ready to go, hopefully by this weekend. Will definitely let you know. And if I luck into catching one, I'll be sure to put it in a video!
@@SavageFlies 👌 awesome! Look forward to it. Good luck! 👍
