- The Comparadun pattern has been one of my go-to patterns for a long time. This fly is the ultimate in simplicity and lends itself well to a variety of mayfly species. You can simply change the colors of the materials to match everything from Pale Morning Duns to Baetis to Green Drakes, while still using the same overall pattern. The deer hair wing gives the pattern good floatation and visibility but doesn’t add so much bulk that it makes the fly look too big to the fish. I know this pattern looks simple, and it really is, but don’t let that look dissuade you from tying and fishing them. This really is a great pattern and is something I don’t leave home without.
Materials Needed:
Hook: TMC 100 SP-BL #10-20
Thread: 50 Denier GSP
Tails: Tailing Fibers
Abdomen: Callibaetis Super Fine Dubbing
Wing: Nature's Spirit Deer Hock Or Comparadun Deer
Thorax: Callibaetis Super Fine Dubbing

I’ve seen all of Charlie’s tying videos. This one is my favorite. Almost like a machine tied it. I’ve been tying for almost 30 years.
I have been tying Comparadun's since the late 1970s along with the BRF variation. I like the way you set the wing, for a cleaner profiled fly. I am going to do that one. I generally will tie these in Hendrickson Pink, Olive, Light Olive, Adams Grey, White, yellow, brown and black. We have a while fly hatch then come off at near dark in late May and June. a # 14 works well. I tie them down to a # 18 smaller I just use Snowshoe Rabbit foot. Mostly # 14 to 18 are the sizes I use the most, I tied them as big as a # 8 and as small as a # 24 if I got the finner hair. CDC puff works better for that. You are right it's a very very cheap fly to tie, and even cheaper if you do the sparkle dun version. That one has been a favorite of mine since 1982!
Charlie, you are my hero of fly tying. when I want to know, you are my go to. you took the time to show me how to tie the Dalberg Diver some years ago and I had a blast with them. I've been tying for nearly 40 years but I still am learning. Thanks a bunch.

Thanks Charlie. Enjoyed that one. Going to try a few using that wings style tonight. Liked the way the wing buts don’t bulk up the body. I tied a few pig stickers last night. Nice fly from last weeks video.

I really like the flotation provided by the extra surface area of the wing butts. The technique of cutting the hair before tying it in with your off hand takes a lot of talent. I lack that talent but was able to get the same results by tying in the hair with my bobbin hand then cutting it to leave the tips. I thought that info might be helpful to ALL those who also lack your supreme talent. Thanks for taking care of that broken hair. It was obviously a real problem. I am also in agreement that Nature's Spirit hair is hard to beat.
Somewhere I saw a video where the tier stood the wing up in segments by running the thread through only portions of the hair at a time. Much cleaner than trying to stand up the whole bunch with a dam. This is a nice method as well.
C&F hackle pliers are great for plucking errant fibers and hairs out.

I prefer to have that single broken hair tip left in there. That way when I get a refusal, I have an excuse why the fish didn't eat. Couldn't be me .

fall is almost over....and I haven't fished a dry since last Febuary/january. I missed summer even though I fished every weekend. Almost every weekend. So 9 times in June, july and August. Not enough +(

I've been tying my comparaduns that way for awhile I trim the butts but don't cover em I think it aids in flotation also once it gets mangled I think it looks more like an injured mayfly and draws more strikes

Charlie - now I have to learn how to tie the wing in left handed. A right handed tier will crush the tails. Thanks for being so anal about the little details!
I had a similar challenge.. what if I turned the scissors over and cut with it left handed. It did work!

Thats what I always say "Damn this thread" when my old monochord or Danville 6/0 breaks.
I find trees far less discerning than trout. They gladly take my Comparaduns with broken tips. 😄
have you used hackle fibers for a tale?I dont like to buy those microfibettes if i dont have to.
Is there any way to do the part at 6:07 right handed? It is very difficult as a right handed person to put the correct amount of tension and position the wing at the appropriate position.
Love the fly but its really hard to do as a traditional right handed tier....used different hands to hold the wing during tie in...
