There are things I’ve experience in life that are hard for me to verbally speak about. In my past as well as the present. Things that can’t be said through words can be expressed and felt through movement and music. Some things have to be felt to be understood and when I was a child, there was nothing that made me FEEL more than dance or the Church Choir. One of things that got me through a lot of inner battles was the church choir.
The sound from the Choir was always soothing and in a way healing for me. It filled my soul and gave me hope for life in times I used to ask myself is my life even worth living. I believe the church choir was the true source in why my dance is so passionate and soulful. Many times I reflect on those moments from church and the sound and vibration from the songs of the Choir.
There are so many things happening in the world from the global pandemic to the Social Injustices of of Black Lives in America as well as Nigeria and the war in Armenia. With so much trauma in the world and in our lives, We all need something to help us heal especially in times like these. For me, simply reflecting on the sounds of my childhood church choir reminds me of how powerful our voices can truly be whether it's the many voices of protestors fighting injustice or the voice of movement. This is my voice.
