First off, I'm a big Tito fan. I've always favored the fighters with natural punching power and guys with that one punch knockout ability. But Winky Wright is probably one of the most underrated and overlooked fighters in boxing history because of his defense oriented style. He didn't do anything sensational to draw the attention of the casual boxing fan. He was soft spoken, disciplined, and stayed out of the limelight. But what made Winky spectacular was his mastery of the basics. Alot of top ranked fighters avoided Winky throughout most of his career because of his style and ability to make you look boring or average. And I don't know how long Winky's forearms were but it seemed when he boxed up, everything from his navel to his forehead was protected. Always lead with the jab, sharp counterpunching, and patience was the recipe for the disaster for most of the flashy, battle hungry, crowd pleasers in the game. He really deserved more respect if you look at how avoided he was, even more so than the intimidating power punchers of his era. And this was one of his most masterful showings against the legendary Trinidad. Hats off to Winky, much respect.
Winky's style was a brilliant mix of defense and offense. He was slick and defensive, yet he was also a pressure fighter. He'd walk you down and beat you up and still rarely get hit clean in return with that iron-clad guard. It's obvious why he was avoided by so many.
He was peeking here, too. At 160 and i thought he got jobbed vs Jermain Taylor in a conspicuous "Draw" and if ya think back to the talent at the time, you had Pavlik, Rubio, Abraham, Miranda, Pirog, Jacobs to Corey Spinks went up to 160 and lost a SD to J Taylor and i thought it could have went Corey's way
Winky was so underated and so very avoided but such a joy to watch.Even early in his career,he boxed like a seasoned veteran and everything was so technically smooth...great,great fighter!
Winky Wright a forgotten great, would have a good chance against all of boxings greatest from 154-160. Him against McCallum would have been something beautiful.

Can't imagine having to face Winky. That jab is basically a cross but quicker. He also drops it on you straight from his guard, so u eat it while you're looking for spots to place your own punches.
And he throws it off rhythm too! Mixing up feints as well! When he quickly covers up, sometimes he does that to get a reaction, and when you expose yourself to the feint, WHACK! Another Jab. So it’s good defense AND broken rhythm at the same time.
Absolutely spot on ... He's the guy you don't mention he dosnt get spoken about because you know he's gonna give you a very difficult nights work ... A total boxing technician love watching his work
MM 655321 : De La Hoya was scared of Winky Wright, because he knew that if Quartey nearly knocked him out Winky would get the job done. Winky was like a smarter version of Quartey. De La Hoya got out of fighting Winky by pretending to want to fight him and then being impossible during the purse negotiations, so that Winky would just say “f*ck it!”
I don't think so... Rated exactly where he should be. A footnote in boxing history. Fought fighters smaller than him wore giant gloves, wore is belt up to his nipples and hid in his safe place where he shall remain.
You ain’t lying the closest one to that I’d have to say Benevidez/Dirrel. He and Winky both mixed it up with counters hooks leads and combos but this was a one armed fight
If Wright wasn’t a defensive fighter, he could have knocked out Tito on at least 10 occasions. There were times where Winky needed a big right hand to finish Trinidad. The body language of Tito signaled a defeated fighter who had no plan to solve the problem in front of him.
Trinidad never been so effective as a middleweight, he was simply a beast physically in the lower divisions but at middle weight the power wasn't so devastating and so the ability to eat punches wasn't so great. He never had particular other skills, terrible foot work and defence
Winky a very skilled boxer that stuck to the basics... One of the best jabs in the sport an his defense was like a damn wall you couldn't get through. His forearms was so long he was able to block his head and body at the same time! His jab and defense will go down as one of the best ever!
