Upd: you better use regular tile adhesive instead of school glue for faster/easier job.
Your back splash is so gorgeous and unique! I'm curious why you didn't use an adhesive for tiles instead of the wallpaper paste? Have any of the tiles fallen off? Very inspirational and thanks for sharing all the techniques you learned along the way!
I did it back then because I didn't know that adhesive would work better. Now I know that tile adhesive is definitely better. I also would have done more of my work directly on the walls. And no, once mosaic is grouted, nothing can fall off.
FABULOUS! Absolutely, FABULOUS!! I found a beautiful Mexican Ceramic sink. My husband and I turned it into a bird bath which I did mosaic on the stand he built to hold it. We love it. Birds love it. Squirrels love it. Raccoons love it. I'm not sure about the opossum. He's a quiet one! :)
This has been the MOST informative mosaic video I've watched. I love how you detailed all the products and demonstrated using and not using the mesh. It was extremely helpful. Also absolutely loved your design with the vibrant colours and adding the real vase which was so spectacular.

BRILLIANT.....What scared me was the idea of putting the mosaic on the wall....this is where many people probably go wrong so getting a contractor to help made a lot of sense....just became interested in mosaic...will try doing one soon....thanks you creative amazing woman....London uk

Absolutely beautiful! Sometimes your own labor and time is the best way to get just what you want - could you even imagine what it would cost if paying someone to do this? Mosaics happens to be a labor intensive type of art, but it is definitely worth it whether you do it yourself or have the funds to hire an artist to do it for you!

How was it to work with and grout the different thicknesses of the plates used? Lov'it.
I have tried not to use drasticly different in height pieces, the rest is fine. just make sure you do not grout a huge portion at once, this way you can be more attentive to details when cleaning up grout. Thanks for the question!
@@mashaleder merci beaucoup Madame Masha, I made a lot of beautiful mosaic before but just forgot everything. The grouting was mostly done by someone else I guess. Your genius idea of just searching plates in the desired colors saves the day and money. I always searched mostly for tiles. Often it was necessary for making durable floors. But unnecessary for backsplashes like yours. I'm all up for a sink make over. U're a supertrooper inspiration.

Actually I am just now looking for an appropriate mirror right now to do this project for my friend who asked for it. Make sure the mirror frame is flat an use glue E6000 as a base. I will post a pic of my mirror project when I finish it here!

Sorry I did not reply before. It is challenging not to glue your mosaic to the wall but you can always use any cutting board as a base (dont use thin plastic one though). Mosaic gets heavy and rather thick so you should account for it when thinking of sticking it,say, behind the sink... Other than that... It's totally possible.
How do you deal with depth differences with the mess? A plate piece is thicker than a mosaic tile.
Try to preserve a similar depth because otherwise it is hard to clean out grout from in between the pieces. It will also look neater if depth is compatible. I would say do not do depth jump of more that 2-3mm from piece to piece.
@@mashaleder would it be ok to leave off the thinner materials till after you lay the sheet with thicker material? Then add mortar as needed to thinner pieces to needed depth? You did such a beautiful job working with many different materials at different depths. You should make a video. I am starting a project myself in my home. I have never worked with this medium before. I have worked with stained glass.
@@whiteape151 you need to glue all pieces on the board BEFORE you will put grout it. there is another technique when you put grout right on board/wall and then stick pieces of mosaic right into a grout. However in this case you have a very limited time to make your arrangement as grout hardens in about 10-15 minutes. Be careful including pieces of glass into your work because you can injure hands during grouting around the sharp edges.
Have you ever tried using polymer clay to make your own tiles? I've been experimenting bit am to nervous to put the tiles on my actual wall, wondering if you've tried this?
