I'm an A&P. I can say with confidence that prefilling a filter doesn't matter. If you want to, go right ahead but it can be a messy process. The engine will push new oil through the filter so quickly that like I said, it doesn't matter. Personally I wouldn't do it and no a&p's that I know would do it either. Just lubricate the seal and screw it in. As far as that plastic bag method goes, I wouldn't. I'll like to puncture a hole on the topside of the filter where the hex fitting is and pressurize it with a blow gun. That pushes the oil out of the filter and into the oil sump where it can be drained with the rest of the oil. That or I'll have a little ramp under the filter that connects to a small container placed on that convenient little shelf where the firewall is. Run-on sentences FTW!!!
2:43 She's right. In my experience, trying to pre-fill a horizontal filter just makes a big-ol' mess.
Just don't fill it as much as you would one that's vertical. It's fairly easy to accomplish without a mess if you're not inept/have some skill and have some common sense.
I've had much harder reaches than that for horizontal oil filters with blind filter housings that have to be done by feel and don't make a mess. I would also rather clean up a bit of spilled oil than run without oil pressure for the length of time that it takes the pump to fill the filter before it gets to the oil galleys and critical components
I always pre-fill them. If they are horizontal it’s just only about half full instead of all the way full.
Pre-fill like 30 years ago was standard procedure even with car and truck engines. Oil produced with today standards are much more better, so everything left in that engine on the piston walls and around can keep viscosity enough time until fresh oil fill the new filter and start lubricating engine properly. When overhauling engine standard procedure is filling that filter cause engine parts all dry. Thanks for reading. And safe flight everybody.
yeah it's a useless practice. The oil pump will start squirting oil onto the cylinder walls in like 5 seconds.
You might mention the fact that oil analysis is available for aircraft to further analyze the condition of the engine.
Send your oil in for analysis. You have to do it several times to get a baseline.Depending on your time since overhaul, metal in your filter could be break-in/ normal. They will list the different types of metals found. It might give you an early warning. I've never filled my filter with oil (Spin on), just oiled the gasket and if slightly over filled it would blow out and stabilize.
Or just check cylinder compresion. If something wrong it is going to lose compresion. Easy to do it and you wont wait 2-3 weeks for results of oil.
If you have access to an attractive woman to assist in an oil change, go right ahead!
hahaha well thank you. As the owner of the 170 I figured I should at least learn to change the oil!
@@stephdachef changing the oil, changing the tire. And a few other things like that are all considered *preventative maintenance* and are perfectly acceptable things for the owner/operator to do. No A&p needed for those, though i still believe you have to make a maintenance log on it.
Fly safe :D
You have a wonderful wife that shares interest in what you're doing. Mine was the same, loved to help work on airplanes choppers and I lost her so unexpectedly. Never put any material things between you and your wife💝 you never know when God will need them more than he knows you do.
Sorry to hear that Don.
Would it have been easier to cut that hose into a shorter segment? That way you could have drained it strait down. I’m no mechanic though so I could be completely wrong
Yeah we will for next time
No, you’re completely correct: I’m an A&P/IA.
I've changed the engine oil many times on many types but always good to watch to see what you can pick up. Good tip about the plastic bag, I've got an RV4 and the oil defo gets into places the sun don't shine - a bag will certainly help. Also, don't use cheap low quality filters, lesson learned ;)
Just make sure to remove all old safety wire before putting the plastic bag in place.. wire and plastic= not a good mix lol
@@stephdachef Agreed, got scars to prove it LOL!
Yeah, Steph's a keeper, not only knows how to fly but changes the oil too. Nice video, Paul.
Plastic garbage bag over the filter before removal is a great idea. Thanks!
I'm just tootling around, not a pilot. But never heard this concept before. Interesting. Apparently, some people also do this with their cars. One comment I read that made sense is that when the oil is drained, there's still residual oil around the bearings.
love the quick release oil valves, but also worry that it will pop open in flight!....it doesn't
Brian Tucker Murphy’s law. Too easy, and tie the filter......
Pahrump is my FAVORITE rural town!
Well whataya know... I just talked to the Pahrump airport president a couple days ago. Really nice guy! Small world.
Always prefill as best as possible, even if you just get the filter wet with oil.
prefill a filter??? BOGUS!!! Use DC4 to lube your seal, not oil...unless you have the new Tempest filter, then use nothing.
What about checking the oil screen? That’s part of an oil change. A clogged screen will cause an engine failure.
Steph, impressive handling of the safety wire pliers. Just like an A&P :)
Aww thanks!! I'm still learning but haven't had any mishaps as of yet!
I guess, somewhere between the new filter fitting and the test run, one should pour some fresh oil in the engine... I am pointing this out because it is not mentioned in the video...
As they say: Keep the blue side up!
PS: A nice girl indeed! There is something nice in her, I still cannot figure out what it is...
I've never heard of prefilling the oil filter. Just saying.
You really should be pre filling/priming a new oil filter while doing an oil change. If you don't fill it then the oil pump first has to fill the filter before oil starts making its way to the bearings, pistons, and cams. The more oil you get in the filter and the more you soak the filter media before starting the less time you'll be running the important bits without any oil pressure right after a change. There's still a film on the rotating parts from the last time the engine was run, but having oil pressure sooner is much preferred.
@@goingtoscotland exactly! I prefill my oil filter everytime. The one time I forgot, my engine told me about it! :o! Prefill everytime.
What about the factory oil filters that are installed inverted? No possible way to have any oil before install. I've never seen any engine maint manual on a piston state to fill filter with oil before install. Lube the gasket? Yes. Fill the filter? Negative.
@@FrigidColdFlying you actually can add quite a bit of oil to those and let it soak into the media. When you upend it it won't drip or spill if you haven't added too much. Obviously there are exceptions, but whenever possible you should get as much oil in the filter before you install it as you can.
Every little bit helps. Don't be obstinant just for the sake of your own stubbornness
You had me until you called me stubborn. I've been in aircraft maintenance and instection for more than a decade. I'll stick to what the manuals say and don't say thanks. Cheers.
A shorter hose would help. 😁
Just did a few oil changed in a cfm56-7 aka 737-800 engines
awesome....
p.s. keep rags around within reach when working on oil related activities!
Yes, great advice!
what is the diameter of the quick drain so we can buy a drain tube in advance??
suction screen?
Pretty awesome time! Looks like you guys enjoy each other. One day my wife will dig flying as much as I do. If you ever are in PIA area let me know.
Thanks Bill! We'll definitely stop by when we make it through IL
Some oil filters go on dry these days. There is usually a very specific torque that you need to tighten the oil filter to. I think the oil would drain a lot better if the hose wasn't so long.
This is what my Sunday will consist of. Thanks for the tips!
Do you happen to know the Hose internal diameter you used on that sump valve?
I’m looking to perform the same task on our Supermunk’s O-360 but can’t find info on what size diameter hose to use.
Thanks for your help.
Pahrump NV... isn't that the airport owned, or once owned by 'Hollywood Madan' Heidi Fleiss?
Cool video nice plane...I would love to see a demo video on filling out the log book for the preventative maintenance preformed on the aircraft,
FARs
§43.13 Performance rules (general).
§91.401 Applicability.
§91.417 Maintenance records.
What oil you running in that bird? Kendall 20w50 race oil?...Valvoline 20w50 vr1 high zinc race oil?
Plan on starting flight school in a month. But I have a tattoo from my elbow to about an inch above my wrist bone. Obviously I would wear long sleeves while on the job but will this stop me from being hired by air lines? Any advice is appreciated thanks
Wyatt Johnson why would it ? I know people who have sleeves
Excuse me sir. How can I clean oil section screen
Clickbait much??? This was not three minutes ... it took all day for two people. And only if your plane has a quick drain. Then, need to take a class in safety wire, and have an A&P on hand to analyze the filter .
We're showing you how to do an oil change in a five minute video, not that it would take three minutes to do the entire process. All day for two people? You'll get faster the more you do it. And you won't need an extra person.
good job
Fantastic video! Appreciate your sharing this with us!!
what type of aircraft
Cessna 170!
You don't need to prefill that oil filters going to be full of oil about 3 seconds after starting the engine. Why make your life harder.
how to change your oil- get Steph to do it.
Thanks for sharing. Never changed the oil in a plane. Curious.....how many hours did you have on that oil?
About 50, I try no to let it go that far
And the size of the hose you use is...........
whatever happened to "8 hours bottle to wrench" :-D :-D
Hahaha it was the reward for after!
only if you are the owner of the aircraft? you did not show how to fill the oil, especially with out leaving a mess.
Use a funnel.
Filling an airplane with oil should've been part of your PPL training. He may not have felt it's necessary because of that
it's draining slow because of the long hose
Don't you need to be certified to do this ? At least in NZ i think .
Owner or Pilot can do it
Why can't aviation piston engines have drain plugs like our everyday piston cars?
Some do. The quick port is really more for attacking a hose. Not as long a hose as these two have, but you get the picture.
They do. You can also get these quick drains for cars as well.
Mine does
Wow... it's so black ! Almost like in diesel engines...
What a good sport!
My wife: "where ya going?"
Me: To the airport to change the oil in the plane, wanna go with and help?"
She: ...
to be fair... It is HER plane. She's done it a few times
Hahaha it's a good skill to learn
That plane have an EDM930?
EDM 900 yep :)
@@stephdachef Did you have fuel quantity issues with it?
3minutes?
The lack of twists in that safety wire makes me cringe!
cruel to not share the beer
I hope Budweiser threw you a hat or something for this video...
This video just drained me! Bwa!
This video is 5 mins long
So you have Lady Gaga changing your oil?
I'll take that as a complement?! Lady Gaga in this instance is changing her own oil.. in her own plane 😝
Probably a better idea to not make aircraft maintenance a timed race lol, just sayin' :-D
oil change in 3 minutes....makes a 5 minute video
Waste of time
