I've been trying to figure this out, what's your take on a foil rare where apparently a fly landed on the card as it went through the machine, and was flattened and sealed under foil? Anatomically complete, flattened like a cartoon steamroller, foil house fly corpse stuck on a card.

One can truly see your love for the game through your eyes and voice 🙂 I too hold dear memories of a long time ago, when I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh with my friends as a kid. Sadly that went away because of similar reasons as you: many felt too "adult" to be playing a "kid's game". Time passed by, I grew older, but I never forgot those happy moments. In a way to reexperience those moments, I started playing magic, with my friend, this very year, after a very, very long and dark period of my life, and found a little community at my local game store shortly after. Sadly the shop closed just a month later. I was very sad, even if I experienced that place for just a few weeks. People were happy to see me, welcoming and joyful. You professor give out the same vibe. I learned this way that the essence of Magic is not the cardboard pieces you use, nor the game in itself, it's the people you play with, the memories you make and the connections you develop. In other words, it's not magic, it's the actual gathering. And that of course is the same for any other game that brings people together. I truly hope to one day find another community, because this to me felt like family, like I belonged somewhere. And to all players of the world I say, keep being proud, don't listen to so called "adults", and keep doing what you love.

If you haven't, I suggest trying mtg arena. It's missing a lot of that community aspect, but just having a place to play mtg is nice and reminds me of better times.

As someone who’s only recently gotten into the game over the last couple years, it’s cool seeing old packs like these opened even if the value doesn’t hold up. There’s just something a little emotional thinking about how these cards have been just sitting in a pack for decades unused, and now they’re out in the world to be collected and/or played with. They finally have a chance to be a part of someone’s enjoyment to the game, and that’s wonderful.

That was a really lovely story about your younger days and why you enjoy opening these older packs to try to reclaim a fun part of your past. It made me long for something I miss from my older days when I loved magic so much I skipped a class or two in college just to play more (I know bad me, but we do silly things for love sometimes.) I wish I could get a group of friends I could play for hours with again, especially playing casual 60 card constructed planechase. That's been my favorite format forever and while I'm glad people enjoy using it to punch up commander sometimes, I'm still sad I don't think I could ever go to any kind of mtg event or store ever again and get a game like that ever again. I miss when commander was just another way to play casual multiplayer magic, and not the only format anyone plays.

Trying my hand at Commander which is new to me, but seems to offer the best flexibility in terms of playing cards that I already know while trying to learn some of these new mechanics and new terms for old ones. Makes me feel old, "WHY BACK IN MY DAY!!" but it feels good to be getting back into something that gave me a lot of enjoyment for so many years.

This video was a whimsical nostalgia trip and absolute delight for me. I started playing way back in Onslaught - yes, "recent" considering there are people who started playing when you did, but I am proud because it is still far enough back to have been part of something great. Cards were cheap, and so were booster packs. The grocery store in the town I grew up in sold literally $3.99 Merc Masque packs and they were fun to open. I loved buying older packs and cracking them with friends, and sifting through all the beautiful older cards. It was nice to see this video and cherish all the memories I have had from way back then. I am glad and grateful you had the experiences you did and you started playing at such an amazing time. Thank you for sharing your joy, and allowing me to share mine here.

That hermit was one of the reasons that my very first deck to this day still contains a flame wave. The look on your opponents face when you wipe out 20+ squirrels and the hermit will never grow old.
As for your collection: yes, I feel you. Also sold/dumped a lot of mine which wasn't used for decks, but still own some nice cardboard including a mana flare, sol ring, several Sardia Colossus and what not.
In this regard the reprinting of some cards has a bit of a bitter taste though. It's not like the 3 sneak attacks I bought around the time Odyssey was around were cheap. Good riddance prof, you have many more years to complete that collection.

Back in April 97 I joined the Army, selling my magic set which consisted of 1 set of power 9 alpha, 2 sets of power 9 beta and 2 sets unlimited with play sets of duals of each set. Also including a power 9 set I used with no sleeves in the high school cafeteria cuz they were ate up among multiple extra mox's and lotuses. I wouldn't change my choice if given a chance. Point being don't regret anything you have done while you were young. Learn from it and understand it helped make you, you.

I'm glad you like to play with the Revised basics. I don't play with those, but I DO play with Urza's Saga basics in many decks because that's when I started playing. In fact, I probably need to look around for another ebay listing of 20 of each to replenish. Seeing them makes me feel so good.

I once had a Soldier of Fortune deck with a lot of cards that can untap creatures along with cards that make your opponent manipulate their deck in some way. You basically make your opponent constantly shuffle with multiple Soldier activations and fool around with their decks until they grow sick and tired of it and just concede in disgust. Good times.

Hello Prof. I'm a new patron and a new magic player. My husband has played for years but other than the beautiful art, I didn't have much interest in it. Recently he asked me to organize his cards for him (his 10,000+ card collection). As I did, I became more and more fascinated with the story, then the mechanics, then I just fell in love with the entire game. My first deck was a mono black Braids, Arisen Nightmare deck focused on drain and gain. I am proud to say that I won my first game against my husband and I did it fair and square. He has too much love for the game to not play it properly. I actually beat him 2 out of 3. He gives me hell about it, but he's also very proud. I wanted to say thank you because watching your videos has also taught me so much. Your kindness is astonishing and you keep it light and fun. Please keep inspiring more people to just enjoy the game.

Remember kids, variance is a tough mistress so unless you're buying pallets of cards at wholesale prices don't bother opening boosters (except for draft) because you will never come out ahead in the long run.

That was really visceral to me. I started at the end of Unlimited and poured a lot of money into the Revised set. I wasn't able to get any Arabian Knights where I lived but I bought a ton of Antiquities and Revised.
I swear that I could smell what the printing odors put off by those cards.
I had gotten my first reliable car around that same time and put a few of the common and uncommons in the back window of my car. After about 6 months of being in the sun almost all of the color faded out of them so that the black writing on the cards were all that remained. I had a Hurloon Minotaur that looked like an albino. It was awesome. I might be wrong but I think I ended up trading it for a dual land when dual lands were still in print.

Prof, you and I are of the same blood. In high school, I collected the complete set of revised along with a ton of other cards, huge swaths of everything up to Stronghold. I sold most of my cards, but thankfully, I didn't sell my two kitchen Table decks, my Revised Set, most of Stronghold, and some "old" cards at the time: a smattering of easy to get legends, Dark, Arabian Knights, and Antiquities. I'm thankful that I didn't sell: I can only imagine my regret.

thank you for these kind of videos, they remind me of some of the first videos ive seen from you. amazing. i love oldschool booster openings. i myself like to collect some old boosters over some time and then open them just for the fun of it. of course in hope to find some cool cards. but most out of joy. oldschool sets are the best for me. all the way to khans of tarkir. wich i consider my personal border from older to newer mtg boosters. because. i started playing magic while kahns of tarkir was released so it was my
first set and first block. and holds a big place in my heart. but to me
everything that was before always seemed so much more interesting for
me. but im still very interested in magic the gathering. and nowadays im
more into acutally playing the game then ever before due to the
commander format beeing broad to me by friends. wich really got me into
it again after being more or less absent for some years.
