    If you try a CO2 scrubber, you can make it “recirculating “ where the air intake comes from the top of your skimmer cup and the media lasts a looong time. BRS has a video on drilling the skimmer cup lid to attach a hose. Media can be bought on eBay - enough to last a year or longer, for $100 or so. It’s used in anesthesia machines so you can find it in bulk as a medical supply and it’s the same stuff.

    Definitely consider a CO2 scrubber for your PH issues. It cost me less than 60 bucks from BRS and increased my PH from 7.8-8.0 to 8.2-8.4. Almost working too well!
    If you set it up as a recirculating scrubber it makes the media last MUCH longer cutting down on cost and effort. Best part, its basically a free modification if you own a drill.

    I just looked at your video from a couple years back and I had forgot that I had viewed that video. I would not let your alkalinity go below 8 before you started adjusting Alkalinity, Coralville not tolerate up-and-down fluctuations of two or three points up and down you need to find out how much alkalinity and calcium your coral is taking up how to trust your automatic dosing to keep up. The more coral you put in your aquarium the quicker it will drop, so you must adjust accordingly, But I’m sure you’re already know all of this. But you had it right, you had the right salt should’ve stuck with it.

  • @charlesmorris6476
    @charlesmorris6476 3 года назад +1

    If you buy the Fritz RPM do not mix the salt with cold water, make sure it is the same temperature as your aquarium before you mix the salt. Mixing cold is a no no, also if you mix cold water will not clear.
    It will hold your alkalinity much longer because it has a slightly elevated level which is good for your coral growth and it is easier to keep it dosed to the proper level. So when you see your alkalinity levels starting to drop you can add a little lime Water to keep up your alkalinity easier. In my 55 years in dealing with salt water I would say this is a much better salt than Red Sea in my opinion. Enjoy your videos hope you keep doing them for a long time.

    CORRECTIONS:
    Lou from Tropic Marin reached out and corrected a few things that I thought would be very important to share here --
    1) In the video, I mentioned that Lou said that Pro Reef Salt was purposely made with lower Alk for tanks with calcium reactors, that was incorrect. I misheard / misunderstood him when we talked. He actually said a lot of people THOUGHT that was the case but the Pro Reef Salt actually had lower Alk because a lot of research in Europe points to many species of corals, particularly some acros, benefiting from living in alkalinity closer to natural sea water. And these same species do not like it when the alkalinity is too high. So, many people with acros heavy tanks wanted a lower alkalinity salt. Sea water being 6.5 dKH, TM made Pro Reef with alkalinity between 7-8 dKH (not just 7 as stated in the video. There will always be a small range no matter what company the salt comes from.) The lower alkalinity does not contribute to raising alkalinity that is sometimes seen in tanks with calcium reactors, but it is not the reason Pro Reef Salt was developed.
    2) Lou also attached a price break down chart of major salt brands ( here is the same chart on R2R: www.reef2reef.com/attachments/2de58b17-981b-4868-8039-15e47011f957-jpeg.978450/ ). Tropic Marin Pro Reef is 1 penny more per gallon than the HW Marine that I switched to. And the Tropic Marin Classic Salt is actually less expensive than Reef Crystals.
    My sincere apology to Lou for putting words in his mouth, that was the worst. 🙏

    I bought this pump 2 years ago for 20 bucks on Amazon.... still going strong. I use it to pump my Tropic Marin salt mix from the 55 gallon drum on the opposite side of the house into the tank. It is compatible with the Python suction hoses, fits perfectly and I have "the hook" on the end. It's amazing.

    If you do decide to run a C02 scrubber, an affordable alternative to most media is simply Ms Wages pickling lime.
    C02 scrubber media lasts me a few weeks and I can tell when it wears out, by watching the ph on my apex system.
    It takes probably a minute to change out, and pickling lime comes in small easy to store bags, that will be in the grocery section of your local Kroger, publix, or Walmart...and costs pennies on the dollar to what other c02 absorbing media will. Other than that all you need is a basic brs style media reactor, hose, and a skimmer. It works great. Stabilized my ph quite a bit
    I'd also suggest a algae scrubber. It could help.

    Glad your feeling better, your health always has to be #1. I've been in and out of hospitals most of my life and have debated going to the hospital in the past over getting a promotion....I was talked out of that and went in, and was told if I had waited much longer instead of being in there for 2 weeks I could have been in there for 3 months 😵 However I understand how this virus can scare you away from actually going. You ask yourself am I over reacting, and what if I end up getting sick just because I went. Glad you made it and your feeling better. On another note, you always seem to cover content I'm currently looking at which has a nice little benefit for me. I know BRS has a sale going on and I've been going back and forth on getting the SICCE pump that does the same thing, sucking water from the bottom and is helpful with water changes. However, its usually $100, even on sale its $80. Getting the one you got for $25 is definitely cost effective. Let me know when you figure out the size of the hose attachment, I'll probably end up grabbing one and use the saved $55+ to get something else. Stay safe and glad to have you back 🤠

    Glad u r feeling better, use a wooden air stone at night and the micro bubbles clean the tank , by attaching to the rubbish , then overflow the weir, n get skimmed up , jus set it to a timer so it starts when lights go off, and stops a few hours before u will wake up , that way u don’t get to witness the bubbles

      The way I got around it was to put the wood block next to the return pump so most of the bubbles left the sump , I know of people jus putting the air stone into the display and take out every morning , but like yourself, I find automation the key to success,if u decide to do it in the centre to try n move the water , u could always split the airline and use taps , but just make a lid for the section u put it in , good luck , gr8 content as usual

    To increase your ph the first thing you can do is aim your returns just a bit higher to agitate to surface more. The air pump in the sump is a good ides but a better one is a tiny powerhead. I got a syncra mini for this same reason and it costs the same as a cheap air pump and moves more water.

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  3 года назад

      Hey Eric, I am this close to doing this. One of my major concern is if my skimmer overflow (eg: forgot to shut off skimmer after shutting off return pump for feeding/water change), the skimmate could overflow into the Co2 scrubber and back-siphon. I need to look more into installing a float switch for the skimmer.. etc. A bit more complicated than I am ready to tackle right away; wondering if you have any fail safe in place that could be easy to intall?

    • @ericbregant7017
      @ericbregant7017 3 года назад

      Yeah, the float switch would be the best fail safe. It is a risk but it makes the media last way longer.

      Good for big work like lifting rock or larger objects, would be a bit cumbersome if I try to use it to pick up small frags... etc.

    Please careful when using HW Marine salt. I was using HW Marine exclusively for about 2 years and was great. Just like you it had the parameters I wanted. But my tank started take a bad turn. Alk started to rise and calcium started to drop. I then started compensating more calcium to keep up, and dosing calcium and started to get so much participate causing pumps and everything to build a lot of the white crud. Thought it was my tank doing something odd... but thought hey why not test my salt, sure enough alk was at 12 and cal in the 300. I stocked up on Black Friday so opened another bag, this bag mixed alk at 5 and calcium 550 ish, mag was near 1100. Had to trash both boxes.

      There are very effective methods of treating them now but you have to be sure about which species you are fighting. There is a huge thread on Reef2Reef now detailing successful methods. UV for ostreopsis, silicates for amphidinium, etc. Dino knowledge has come a long way in recent years. I have amphidinium right now, the kind that covers the sand bed. Dosing SpongeExcel and raising nutrients to fight. Going well so far.

      @@thedon98677 I dosed silicates for my prorocentrum, verified under a microscope for months. No change. Also used phyto, pods, etc. no change, nothing helped.

      @@aaronshapiroedc ouch. Did you check nitrate and phosphate and dose those? Every morning my phosphate is undetectable with my Hanna checker and I have been dosing .08ppm every day. I think I need to up it even higher. The dinos and diatoms are ravaging my P. Nitrate has stayed above zero but noticing I need to dose some of that too. But now that I have been consistently dosing nutrients I am noticing they aren’t coming back as fast each day and my sand is slowly whiter

    Have you looked at those diatoms under a microscope? It might not be diatoms and I wouldn’t expect it to be under you are dosing silicates. Could be dinos or cyano.

    Do you ever feed your big tank the brine? Is there a benefit to giving them?

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  3 года назад +1

      I do feed the BBS to the 135g as well, the Anthias goes crazy over them. I feel that the larger variety of fresh food that I feed my tank the better... with no scientific backing. 😅

      If tissue is ripping off the corals or polyps are retracted, I'd say yes. Otherwise I like to crank the flow up as high as the corals seems comfortable
