  • To watch someone who knows what they are doing take the Hoks downhill, go to • Hoks go Downhill
    I got a pair of Altai Hok skis. They are 2 parts ski, 1 part snowshoe. As a person who really dislikes snowshoes, I think they are pretty awesome. They are much lighter than, say, a backcountry ski. They have permanent skins on the bottom to help them get grip, though they aren't as grippy as a backcountry ski with skins or the crampons on a snowshoe. They also have edges to help with turning (unlike a cross country ski). Overall I found them amazing on mild and moderate terrain, though on the steepest part of our climb to the ridge, I found them quite challenging -both going up and down. The skins slow them down, so they don't get much flotation in powder. They have a quite a dirrerent feel to them than anything I've skied on, so it will be an adventure leanring how to use them.

    Wow! Thanks for the shoutout! Appreciate that. I've been out on the Hoks a lot recently. For gnarly descents, it's really hard to beat a tiak. You get good support for carving, and no falling forward when the skins hit the brakes. Even makes climbing better. Holding the fatter heavy end away from you, it applies leverage to your bases for more bite. Even help when climbing sidehills to keep some balance. I bet the 145's really float better, and keep speed and carve better. Most of the really cool videos out there seem to feature 145's, but I like my shorties in tight bush. Get lots of practice. Have fun. Take care out there.

      Ya, I hate getting skis tangled, so I'm still happy with the 125s. Maybe I'll have to give the tiak a go. I can really see it helping now that I've gotten a feel for the hoks.

    Wow, cool review Carley! I find this stuff totally fascinating as I've never skied in my life. I didn't even know that this kind of ski/snowshoe cross-over gear existed! Thanks!

    I have skied these pretty well in similar conditions. I used a classic Chili telemark binding and heavy duty 3 buckle plastic boots. They are slow, but that's 👌 They're good for XCd with plastic boots.
    I have done some winter camping withem too. I swapped them binding to my Voile backcountry and leather boots. They worked great for 10 miles a day for 3 continuous days withs lots of hills. Love the.

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  3 года назад

      I've gotten a lot better on them once I started using them with the tiak. It was a game changed. I struggle in icy conditions because my boots and bindings aren't rigid enough to dig the edges in. I still using them with my heavy duty hikers and universal bindings. I've since invested in a full backcountry setup for steeper terrain. These are still my favourite though.

    Why someone subjects themselves to such self-inflicted torture is beyond me, and then you get to the summit and it's all worth it. Good job trying out new things and well done getting those for free. The ending was epic, CA-RASHHHH!!!

    What is the blackened red Rossignol behind you? I'm looking for a general purpose backcountry ski for the Wyoming Rockies and am currently heavily leaning toward the longer Hoks. How does that Rossignol compare?

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  5 лет назад

      PlanetRigo Those are my husbands super 7. He likes them a lot and uses them for backcountry and resort skiing. I wouldn’t recommend the hooks for resort, especially with universal bindings. Without rigid boots it’s hard to catch the edges. Plus the skins will slow you down. If you want something for mild terrain in the backcountry and hate snowshoes get the hoks. If you get the Hoks I definitely recommend he tiak (a long pole) rather than ski poles. The Hoks change your balance quite a bit and the tiak works better to correct that.

    Look like like some nice skis... I should try going back on the slopes one day. despite the fact that my family may have a med evac team on hand after last time... I mean it was just a broken elbow, but it's me we are talking about, and they worry I'll do worse again.

  • @araarthura3007

    NOT all that and a bag of chips. These not-skis have very serious limitations. They are great on the ascent defy control on the descent.

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  Год назад

      It depends on the terrain. I now use these with a tiak rather than ski poles, which makes a huge difference on the control. I also now have a full touring setup. I use the hoks when I know I can get away with it on the descent.

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  3 года назад +1

      I though I responded to this. Hmm. Anyway, I've started using a tiak. They are easy to make, and completely change your balance to something more suitable to the skis. Good luck and have fun playing with them.

    Watching years after this video was posted, and I'm curious if anyone reading has input after using these for a while?
    I'm primarily interested in an alternative to a XC ski. Looking for something that would allow exploration on ungroomed trails, at nature preserves ect. I don't live near any significant elevation.
    The universal binding is appealing, because by owning 2 pair, I could invite anyone to come along with no special gear requirements.

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  2 года назад +1

      I’d say something level with a few east trails is the ideal use for them. I’ve since upgraded to a touring setup for harder terrain. I take these to our local nature centre and my husband can follow with his xc skis pretty well.

    After a couple years of having these are you still using them? I’m looking into a set for this season and I’m curious if they’re worth trying. The last thing I need is another set of skis lying around!! Great vid!

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  3 года назад +3

      I was in my third trimester last year, and this year I'll probably stick to snowshoes since I'll have a baby on my back. But I would still be using them. I have an actual backcountry ski setup now, but I still prefer these when the terrain isn't too steep. They are much lighter on the way up.

    There are sprays to help the skins slide better. Can you get the bindings separate and put them on spare skis?

    • @Nerding4Nature
      @Nerding4Nature  5 лет назад

      Good to know. You can buy them separately, but I don't think they'd work well with regular skis. The binding probably aren't rigid enough to get good turns out of anything much heavier than the hoks. They also don't have a safety release or breaks. Maybe with kids skis though. altai, us-store.altaiskis.com/product/universal-binding
