I have a Samuel Davis born 1716 , died in Massachusetts. His wife was Elisabeth Oselland born 1720. Don’t know where in Wales they were from but my Dad said they were from Wales, his g-father still spoke Welsh. Very good information you have here, Thank you 😊

Useful video for helping people to trace their ancestry, one point though, there isn't a cable-car to the summit of Snowdon, it's a mountain railway, a train that uses a special cogged track, running centre to the outside tracks, that is geared to the train to enable it to climb the steep inclines (the 'usual' outside wheels of the train wouldn't provide enough traction in themselves for this).

Wonderful! I have Parry, Edwards, Morgan, Phillips and Davies in my tree! Mostly they emigrated to the US around 1860 but I really want to find older generations in Wales. Loved Wales when we visited in 1986!

Do you know any names of relatives in US? I'm actually Davis but it's quite possible the name was changed.

A record given as "Ystraddynodog" on Genes Reunited, there is no such place, turned out to be a computer misreading of a V as N from handwriting on a Victiorian record. It was in fact Ystradyfodwg, in the Rhondda.

Thanks. This is very useful. Any chance that the slides - or the text from the slides - could be downloadable? :-)

Have you ever heard of the name Wheelock? It could be spelled whelock, welok, ouilock. An ancestor hugh de Whelok would've been a knight in the cheshire area. A landholder in what is now called cheshire. Believe his name referred to winding river.

Hi there this is a great video for me starting out. I hope you could answer what seem like a simple question but I suppose I’m just starting out researching. So, I have managed to use censuses goon back to 1861 to trace great grandparents how sure can I be that I ha e found t be correct family member? I have essentially traced working out birth dates from the censuses and then searched on earlier censuses to trace. Hope this makes sense. Thank you

In my ancestory research, I discovered that William Griffith came to America in the late 1600’s. I have seen many different spellings of Griffith. Is the modern surname Griffith a derivation of other Griffith names (Gryffeth, Griffiths, etc) from the 1600’s?

In parish records prior to, say, 1800, a baptismal entry would state the given name of the child, the given name of the father and the mother's name with a patronymic surname. Does that patronymic surname that follows the mother's given name refer to her husband's father or her own father?

The brother of my grandfather , born 1894 was always saying that we are from Wales, and that we are Celts.
Could you , please, tell me how to start by searching the real roots.

You've heard of the royal Tudor house in Wales right? Good possibility that your ancestors had something to do with that

Unfortunately, findmypast is sadly lacking in it's Welsh resources. Unlike England, Wales (particularly south and west Wales) was largely influenced by the chapels, and less so by the Angican church, therefore parish records are only part of the story. Non-conformist records for Wales are barely covered by findmypast or other providers and it is disappointing to see. Surprising too, in that lots of Welsh mining families left the Valleys for the US, Canada, Australia and elsewhere. I have no doubt the demand is there, it just seems that the large providers are happy to take the subscriptions but not a lot of re-investment seems to be going on. Rehashing records from familysearch seems to be the order of the day. A cheap way to increase the number of records, whether they are particularly useful or not.

Hi there, thank you for your feedback - we've passed this onto our Data Team. In the meantime, we are continuing to add Welsh records like probate records and newspapers, so please keep an eye on what we're adding each week.

Whole British ( welsh) tribes were given these surnames by the conquering Invaders and were given Christian names so a whole tribe would be John or David...
