In this Wish You Were Here guitar lesson we are gonna break down all of the classic guitar parts performed by David Gilmour on this classic Pink Floyd song.
Wish You Were Here is widely considered one of the greatest acoustic classic rock songs of all time and with good reason. It starts off with an instantly identifiable guitar riff originally played on a 12-string acoustic guitar recorded to sound like it is being played through a cheap car stereo.
From there Wish You Were Here develops into a song containing arpeggiated picking, chord strums, and a bunch of acoustic guitar soloing.
In this Wish You Were Here guitar lesson I will show you not only the intro solo, but also the pedal steel guitar solo heard later in the tune. However, I will arrange this solo so you can play it just fine on a standard tuned acoustic guitar.
I will also tackle all the soloing David Gilmour does towards the end of the song while he is scat singing.
Overall, I think learning this classic Pink Floyd song will really help develop those acoustic soloing chops. It will certainly gets those calluses in shape.
Have fun guys! Carl..
Not a lot of guitar teachers out there who go over every little detail like you do. Thank you, Carl!

I hope this message reaches you. first to wish you merry christmas and say that through his teaching, i fulfilled one of my dreams ... last night, I could achieve this beautiful song...touching it finally...I think something changed in me ...thank you very much, really...thanks..God bless you...
Touching IT? does "it" like to be touched? did "it" touch you back and as such "changed something in you"?
Im happy for you.
+Alexander Miles if you practice frequently about a month to play it well id say
If I learn how to play this my brother is going to buy me a Les Paul guitar. God bless you
I m sure you got your les paul.. 😇
laterslaura did you get your Les Paul?
Best of luck
Why not a black strat
Did you get it?
Finally, someone who demonstrates what we are going to learn *before* the actual lesson. How often do I end up watching a few minutes of a video that teaches me stuff I never actually wanted to play (alternative/bad arrangements, simplified versions, the wrong song... you name it). Nice lesson!
a lot of guys are hard to learn from.you are very easy to follow.smooth.natural prescence.your an excellent guitar teacher.thank you,& please don't stop the world needs people like you to carry the guitar torch and pass it on .
This is great stuff - I have played this tune for 20+ years and had always missed those base notes in the verse part. The moment I heard you play it, I heard right away what I had been missing all this time.
Great Work!
I learned the whole song in just some hour thank to this tutorial. Took me some days though to get it sound exactly right with the tempo and everything. Thank you.
How much prior experience did you have playing for you to learn it perfectly that fast?
Taking first steps in guitar playing, lessons like these help a lot, by your help now my playing gets better and better and I don't even need a teacher :) thank you Carl!!!

Very nice guitar lesson, very well done. You saved me a lot of work. One of my guitar students requested this intro and instead of having to transcribe it as usual, I find your lesson! Thanks, you’re a very good teacher!
Whenever I need a tutorial and see this guy has it...don't look further. Nevertheless if I need variations and simplifications I check out all the other great guitar teachers here on YT. Without yous all, baskin and campfire music woudda died out long ago. Thanks to you and many many others for sharing.
"were just 2 lost souls swimming in a fish bowel year afta year"
"we're" :P lol
*bowl. You’d have to be really lost to be swimming in a fish bowel.
Running over the same old ground and yet we found the same old fears wishing you were here
@@MrOffTrail ahahaha

This is the absolute best lessons channel of all. Just finished the Is there anybody out there lesson, which is fantastic, so very well explained. I just recently bought a PRS A40E acoustic and this song is necessary.

You're great man! You helped a beginner like me learn one of my favourite songs & put a big dumb smile on my face! :-D Thanks dude!!
same here!
Great lesson, this is one of my favorite songs and I always thought it would be too hard to play, but you broke it all down so clearly! Can't wait to dig into the solo next!!
Of all the Lessons for this song this one sounds, to my ears anyway, the correct way to play it.
If I want to learn how to play a song right, I come here! I did not know those were 6 string inversions. Sounds so nice, full and authentic! Twice as fun to play when it sounds right.
Excelente lección de esta preciosa canción de Pink Floyd! Muchas gracias y saludos. 🎸😎
A girl ask me to please learn this song so thanks this is a big help!
Love the tone of the Guitars
Thanks for this movie, you explain really well :) Maybe it's just me, but I think that in the intro, when you 'walk' the little bass line back down on your guitar, it actually starts with the G string played open. So G (open), D (2nd fret), D (open). The second time around I hear it as D (2nd fret), G (open), D (2nd fret), D (open).
Great teacher. Helped me so much. All though I would suggest a strumming pattern. I got it from watching it a few times.
what is the strumming pattern
Your the BEST it's so easy to learn with you THANK'S TO BE THERE FOR US
of all the teaching vids out there, yours are definitely the best -
I just learned the first intro without the strumming in one day! Love this. Thank you.
Gonna like and subscribe.😁
This is an awesome lesson. I would like to know what type of strumming pattern I should be using though.
I think that you become in my favorite teacher on YT... you teach the song in a very easy way!
I absolutely hate that Billie Eilish's Wish You Were Gay is the first search suggestion when typing this song in the search bar.
Dude, that's such a great lesson; very many thanks. This song always makes me think of the struggle to adjust back into normal society after deploying and I've wanted to be able to play it for years. Excellent tutor.

Nice Carl! I think you nailed this one and I saw Gilmour playing it the same way. I thought I already had it but missed the inverted chords as well as the intro voicing. Now it sounds just right!
You have talent to teach. Good video
Thanks!
Hey Mr. Carl Brown I just wanted to say thank you for all of the lesson videos that you do. I have been watching your videos for a few years now. I can play something on the guitar and it will sound like it’s supposed to and thats all because of you and
your video’s!!!! Thank you very very much.
Wow! Thank you so much!
Great job!! Inversion chords…I like it
You are a great I have learnt guitar by your lessons only,
I play mostly Pink Floyd,
So I request you to upload a lesson for "pigs on the wings"
I really want to learn it
All of a sudden I learned more by watching the intro after years of practicing.
very simple, good job
Its so great! Gracias from Mallorca!
it think the strumming pattern is D - D --- D - U - U -D
+Anthony H thanks for the help
no problem buddy
1 & & 2 3 4 & then 1 2 & &
What are the ' --- ' between the patterns, like what is D - D?
Sai Phanindra Darbha I think i put “-“ as just like a space in between each strum. And “---“ is just like a longer pause in between strums? If you get me? Lol I wrote this comment 4 years ago and I don’t play guitar anymore so I don’t really know haha 🤣
Awesome!!! The only thing I am struggling with is the strumming lol
It's not a transistor radio effect, it's the 12 strings effect. :P It was indeed recorded on a 12 strings.
Sorry, I meant it's played on a 12 string
amazing lessons thanks a lot for all music so nice !!
Nice and great more power
This was very very helpful
On the intro, is it fair to say the strumming patterns between bass lines are fairly random and you should just time them so the bass lines fall in to place in the right time?
great lesson and a great song!!!
what is the strumming pettern?
This is really good I know how to play this perfect now!
Another great lesson!Regards from BrazilBtw: Im already playing Iris likes a boss thanks to your Iris lesson
Thank you 😊 🤝
I really learned this fast! Great tutorial, thanks! :D
As always Carl!
great video. thanks!
Nice job, dude. Great rendition...
Thank :) Very good lessons.
Thank you, great lesson... 👌
how do you tune it to sound like the recording
Stuart Crosbie E tuning: E A D G B E BUT it might not be the tuning - David Gilmour's recording uses a 12-string guitar so that's perhaps why it doesn't sound exactly the same when we/us (mortals) try n' play-it! lol's
Can you put a camera on your head so I can see from your perspective. It'll help me learn
Ahahha
Dude you ROCK !
Lol I'm learning this song right now in my guitar lessons and now you made a video :D thx :p
I'm pretty sure the strumming pattern for the verse is 1--2-&--3--4-&-& (Or as some of you prefer D--D-UP--D--D-UP-UP).
ive never seen ur notation before (Im rather new) but holy shit is it way more comprehensive than the stupid down down up shit!
Saying the 1, 2 & is easier to speak while playing in some guitarist opinions.
Hey Carl, I can't seem to find any tutorials on how to play Echoes by Pink Floyd anywhere on youtube. Do you reckon you could maybe do a lesson on how to play echoes as I would really love to learn that guitar solo.
awesome stuff dude!
amazing! thank you
Really thanks man!!!!!!!
thank you so much Carl! very great lesson! may i ask what type of acoustic guitar you have?
transistor radio effect! WOW!!!!
what is the strumming pattern he does ?
This great I'm so glad you made this. I just suck
thanks oztreicher! great
My understanding is the D/F# is a bar chord starting on fret 2 that is stretchy for me? Ill take your version cause I can play it
Thank you great lesson :-)
What is the strum pattern between the like a and d chords
Thank you!
Thanks a lot buddy
Great lesson as always. What’s the guitar you’re playing?
