Oh that Shakespeare was spoke like this nowadays at the RSC! So clear, so easy to follow etc etc. no breaking up of the iambic. Energy through to the end of the sentence - or line. Allowing the words to breathe. Thanks. Paul Greenwood
I agree to some extent but the spoken word can lose so much if just spoken. I always find a fast performance lacking. There is no audience participation. It’s a comedy and should be allowed to breathe.
I just saw an ITV performance of "Twelfth Night" with Joan Plowright, Sir Ralph Richardson, and Sir Alec Guinness. Their diction, pace, and timing are impeccable. As much as I have enjoyed RSC performances recently, they just don't do it these days like they did in those days.
