I moved away from Alberta after work slowed down in 2015. I retrained in a non-oil field diploma at a Polytechnic in a different province. I was without my family for 32 months, and I had a kid in between while I was away. It was very tough. I racked up student debt, but luckily I got a job straight out of school. Things are looking up now.
I'm, needless to say, very happy for you and your family I'm from Ontario and want all Canadians to reach their potential OIl is a difficult field to work in as global markets sometimes fluctuate for good and sometimes for bad, but we are all in this together We are Canadian and will get past this.
It's always the QC fault.. ALWAYS. Maybe if you had invested by yourself in a diverse economy it would have been nice. You don't know how perequation work. You just say this because it is easy.
Hmm...Quebec's economy is diversified from fiance, pharm, aerospace, engineering and forestry. Quebec's Pension Plan has more money than Canada's. Quebec's budget is in a surplus while Alberta's in a deficit. Quebec is on track to fiscal balance. Now, there's talk the the government might lower income taxes (or the PST) for the first time in long time. Our health tax is being phased out in less than 3 years. The provincial Liberal government is doing it right slowly, but effectively. 40+ years of the same government did nothing to soften the blow from low oil prices. Yes, it is true that Quebec takes most from equalization payments, but it does it on a model that provides for its people whilst slowly lifting regulations in the market. Fiscal conservatism should be letting the market decide while saving for the future when it goes bad. Paying your bills in addition to putting money on the side.
Ottawa is the one that administers transfer payments. Provinces don't do any such thing. They never have and never will. Almost all of the previous Alberta Tory governments from the last 44 years did a good job of blowing extreme amounts of money on major messes of their own creation, right in their own province. The naughty boys and girls in the Alberta Tory cabinet didn't plan ahead. Waste, waste and more waste. Foolishly believing that oil prices would remain at top dollar levels.
Nothing lasts forever. These booms are created by banks on the orders of government. This oil boom was gift from oil rich arabs to the west, but the western governments started tapping that they will become the Next oil superpowers, which pissed off the oil rich arabs and the oil rich arabs said, okay Canada and US.. you think that okay, now oil will be at 40$ a barrel and that was it, all those big shiny trucks were repoed. GOODBYE BLING BLING BITCHES!
Alberta has more industries than oil. Comments like that just show how the rest of Canada loves to kick us when we're down. We welcomed all of Canada with open arms during the boom, we let billions of dollars of our revenues leave the province to pay for have-not's. Now that we're in a rough spot, the true colors of the rest of Canada come out. We're only welcomed in Canada when we have jobs to offer and outgoing equalization payments for the rest of the country.
+Young Guns it's not that there is no appreciation. it's just that most places stem from nothing and when folks want to help they get "oh but you're not from here you don't understand"
Young Guns I think you have misunderstood what I was trying to say. I have no ill will towards Alberta. If you do have other industries then that's great.
The world is slowly getting away from oil, so you cant really expect for the good times to come back as strong as before. Start thinking about new industries to work in if possible just in case or think about a real possibility that will solve your future problems SEPARATION . There is very little downside and a huge upside to finally join with the USA and be rid of Trudeau and liberals once and for all. Enough of their indifference to Alberta , join the USA and watch Alberta grow like crazy with all kinds of american investment and besides it would be great to be able to go south for as long as you want. SEPARATION
Thomas Therriault the economy is bad everywhere.I lost my business and everything ten years ago and since have worked odd jobs hardly making ends meet. Can’t claim welfare or unemployment insurance never used food bank even though out of job right now.Businesses have closed down on daily basis in here ON too. I actually lost my hopes for future
Should never of bought the house and big truck to begin with. Oil doesn’t last forever. That’s what these young guys don’t understand with there 100,000 dollar lifted diesel guzzlers.
@@willytrolls oil probably wont last a lifetime no but it also wont end anytime soon, especially during today generations. bad time hit other industries but just because this happen to the oil industry there is less sympathy. If someone who invested in other indutries and made good money all of a sudden loose everything would u even care?
@ fredguy2 -- why wouldn't we? Both Trudeaus caused/is causing the majority of our problems. Sr brought in the NEP (yes, we still remember), and Jr had to buy a 50 year old pipeline in order to expand it... or will he?
Phillip Lopez is that the same as manufacturing in over priced labour Ontario? So long over paid auto workers, none of you can compete with Mexico. Guess you should have worked a plan B too. I guess you could say manufacturing markets are cyclic in nature as it’s always moving to an global region where it’s cheaper once the standard of living where it is causes wages to rise. Even down Alberta economy is better the Ontario and Quebec, it’s clear who works harder.
I got a good 3 years in Alberta, although I am now looking for another job. I'm sure I'll find something but maybe not as high paying. But, I managed to get a huge down payment on a house, owning a house in Alberta is huge, because houses are so expensive. Rental income is good, my renter pays pretty much the whole cost of the house for me. I can live on the cheap for a while. If oil comes back I'll be all over it again.
There is some truth to those that didn't save. Most my oilfield career was driving an 84 Ford F250 RWD. Making repairs on the side of the road, sleeping in horrible conditions, etc. I have a 5 bedroom house, 5 vehicles, and debt free because I didn't finance everything. There is nothing wrong with those that spent money, as when you buy a boat, you are employing people that sell boats, or repair them, etc. I have no problem with oilfield guys buying 2nd or 3rd vacation homes, because they are employing people to build those houses.... The problem will always be the government, for not allowing our industry to compete. End the corporate and union welfare, and de-regulate so the smaller, more accountable oil companies in Canada can Compete against the monopolies.... and get our services to market so we are not losing 30% to the US.
I lost my job and I had to move to Ontario for work. The distance caused such a strain on my marriage that my wife left me. I want someone to tell me to my face to "suck it up"....

Aside from the guy plugging his book, it is nice to see there are no morons cropping up with ignorant comments that you usually see--at least so far. Maybe because their pea brains are not attracted by this topic. Sorry to hear about your situation. A marriage can have enough problems without the additional strains of no job.
Courage the life is not always easy but if i can suggest you something its to go back in Alberta and go get your wife back sometime happiness is not always about the money and career i dont think there is no job in Alberta right ? What are you waiting go take your wife in your arms.. you seduced her a day and your always capable to seduce her a second time its not too late !
For 40 years the Alberta Conservatives did NOTHING to diversify the economy. All Alberta has done is concentrate on oil. Albertans making over 100k /year with minimum wage skills. Now you have an uneducated population who can't pay for their gas guzzling pickups. Albertans blame the Provincial NDP, federal Liberals and Pipelines. They aren't educated enough to realize that it was a global drop in oil prices that caused the slowdown. It happened under the provincial Conservatives. Refineries are being shut down because it is too expensive to refine in Alberta. Why? because people are WAY overpaid for their skillset. Bitumen is expensive to refine. Alberta is not competitive in the global market. Building pipelines will just export refinery jobs. Albertans have always complained when industries get bailed out by the government. I lived there for several years and I constantly heard Albertans say that the government should stay out of the marketplace and we should just let these industries fail. Now it is their main industry that is in trouble and they suddenly change their tune... wanting government handouts. Albertans have suddenly become socialist when it is their wallet at risk. Don't be surprised when the rest of Canada isn't exactly sympathetic.
Alberta didn't "fall" they were pulled down and now held under.....and using statements like "ontop for so long". Working $40 and hour in minus 40 on an oil rig is hardly the top. The oil industry was necessary for the growth of the entire country. Lest we not forget that Alberta floated the entire country financially. The sympathy from this commentator comes with a back hand.
Tough choices. I was a plumber for years, followed by pipefitting. There is no job security out there, ever. Just the illusion of security in good times. There are no simple answers, and not all of it is politicians fault. I am headed for early retirement from that industry, but don’t have kids to worry about. My heart goes out to you. You should get help if you need it. You gotta do whatever to make ends meet sometimes and swallow your pride. One minor tip to those starting out...try bypassing the easy online or phone distribtuion of resumes and visit all who will see you in person. Its how I got my apprenticeship ages ago.
They days are over. You can't walk into any company face to face and give them your resume. All they want is email in this bullshit technical age. It's quite sad and only going to get worse.
The free market done did it. So let's blame the rest of Canada and Justin. Wasn't in just a few years ago this snobby province waggled its finger at the rest of us?
Blaine gullion for a few years at best but keep in mind we were afloat just fine before oil money in Alberta. How about the other 100 and some odd years Alberta has been around. It woundn't hurt to remember that when the rest of Canada wanted to buy oil at a discount from Alberta, Alberta not wanting to beat he price eastern Canada pays said no. So they would not work with the rest of Canada but now the rest of Canada should come to the rescue? That just does not add up for me, they want the up time for them selfs but when putting all eggs in one basket fails.... What is Manitoba was in down times, would Alberta be tripping over them selfs to help. Don't know about you but I doubt it. Just like how the rest of Canada got thru hard times when Alberta was drowning in 100 dollar bills Alberta will get thru the current hard times, Oil will go up and push Alberta back up just may take a year or two. Don't hear much about them wanting to join the US much anymore eh lol
Some of those people left their offspring behind here in Alberta while they had the continuity bias while believing we would always be doing well here. That is okay. Albertans are resilient. Albertans no matter what minority they are from know how to be co-operatve with the rest while being safety minded to help prevent loss of human life too. That is our take away from the oil boom which is going to last until kingdom come.
This. People think the pipeline would make a huge difference. Aslong as the glut is still there, no one will pay top dollar for bitumen or heavy oil. It"s a buyer's market.
@@saxywale2 BULLSHIT The harder it is for Alberta oil to get to market, the cheaper their oil is going to be regardless of quality. Why do the Americans get much more for theirs compared to Alberta then on World Markets? The "oil glut" is another laugh. Wasn't it back in the '70's we were told OUR WORLD WAS RUNNING OUT OF OIL!
Requires corp investment. ..Trudeau spit on investment ...existing refineries in Canada are 70 years old. Unless it is state run i.e. Venezuela it's not happening. ...oh and we know how Venezuela turned out
All you people commenting from Ontario and Quebec (as well as the producer and interviewer in this program) should understand ONE THING; We would be fine, even with cheap oil, if you wouldn't politically interfere with our industry. Stop blocking the pipelines
there is opposition in BC that is against the export of oil, apparently alot of first nations groups along the proposed pipeline area appose anymore pipelines and the export of our oil also BC's government dont want anymore pipelines so how would western separation solve that?
Oil prices go up and oil prices go down. If you can't figure that out you shouldn't be in the oil business. Next time throw a couple bucks in the bank for a downturn. You didn't complain when people were getting ripped off at the gas pump.
+Barbara Harsen I saw what happened to you Americans in 2008 when your housing bubble collapsed, I warned fellow Canadians that the crash was coming to Canada and they laughed in my face...Well looks like I get the last laugh!
“He never thought the good times would end” what kind of outlook is that when you work in a cyclical industry that has been through multiple booms and busts?
It was a wholesale slaughter back in the 80s. That was a record setting time. Made the headlines across Canada. For closures in Calgary were staggering..Edmonton not much better. Alberta has always been like this. Maybe education should prepare your thinking about the Canadian economic reality. The Avro Arrow flattened the highly educated class. No one is immune. To be a Canadian is all about surviving a very cold wild land. That is what makes the Canadian character. When we come your way watch the hell out. WWI and WWII proved that in spades. We are not anywhere near calling it a day yet. Not in a 1000 years. So drop the puck allready.
I do recall how arrogant Albertans were during the oil boom. I suppose it is the human flaw of not thinking in the long-term. In such a humbling bust, what is their long term now, and what wisdom can they impart to other provinces over the evolution of their worldview?
9:40 That bartender is smart. He went through tough times in the 80s... so he opened a bar... which will make him money in good times aswell as bad times.
Oil will go up again, hang tight Alberta and next time save for the low times. $40 an hour for a few years and flat broke a year later means you need to watch your money better and keep you accounts from hitting zero between pays. I live in Ont. and when manufacturing went south I had 2 years income saved because we all knew what was going on just as you folks did.
+4cooey My thoughts exactly. If you invest in tfsas that money can also continue to generate income to supplement your unemployment cheques and be withdrawn with no penalties. I do feel for these people though, I don't have a family but I know that having one makes things less simple. That said I don't understand what they think PM can do to manipulate global oil markets or what they mean when they say they have given help and now they need it. I am open to the fact that I may just be missing something but other than lending money I'm not sure what help they are referring to their having given. And they are obviously receiving that same help now anticipating the deficit, no?
What about the $600 BILLION the rest of Canada (mostly Quebec) has taken from Alberta in Transfer Payments? Maritimers ran home FROM ALBERTA after making the big money and voted LIBERAL in 2019. There are a lot of people, unfortunately, that don't save money for a rainy day; never dawns on them something could happen. I assume SOME might be like that, not all.
@@manlystyleunder50 I think he is pretty close to the mark. Look at Wexit supporters railing against equalization payments. Alberta does not write a cheque to Quebec or the Maritimes. If they do understand that than they are deceitful shits. Which Kenney et al are. Don't get what they want so threaten to separate?! The Maritimes have suffered for decades, I don't see them threatening that. They understood their resource collapsed. Oil is collapsing for two reasons: it's a finite resource and it's harder and harder to extract which makes it more expensive to do so. Two: the rest of the world is moving away from fossil fuels fast. It's the energy of the past. Cons squandered decades of rolling in oil money and did not prepare for AB economy for the eventual decline in oil. It's simple story of the grasshopper and the ant. AB chose the path of the grasshopper. The kicker is they are still doing better than most of Canada. They just aren't doing way better. spoiled kids
Do you know what you are talking about? Trudeau senior's NEP was an attempt to pay Alberta LESS than world prices for eastern Canada, yet there was no benefit to Alberta....it was a one-way street. There is no comparison to what Trudeau senior did, and what Alberta is going through now
I do hate to see people go through this. But I and many others predicted it then years ago. This is what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket. This is what's happening to Russia economy. Everything in oil. When things are good and money is plenty that is when you invest in alternatives knowing no boom ever lasts. On the other side, myself and many other small businesses owners from other provinces watched our businesses disappear during the boom because all the skilled workers headed to the oil boom. Where was Alberta while we were all losing everything during a so called boom time. I went and checked it out for 2 weeks after losing my business, my home and my credit and had to move across country to start over. During an economy boom. I decide it was not worth it as it would pop like any bubble. So now it has and after all those that stayed away and got their lives back on track now have to compete with all the skilled workers coming back and competing for any jobs and demanding much higher pay. That is why people are pissed. It's the oil boomers that didn't and dont care. We've all been through it in some way. Using immigrants as a pawn is pathetic. Shame on anyone that does. Keep your chin up and realize none did this to you. It was your choice. You gambled as we did and lost in the end as we did and were not complaining. I haven't worked in 2 years but I'm not blaming aAlberta or Justin Trudeau. Better listen to yourselves. Grow up. You're not alone.
I feel for this guy because I was in the same situation just like many men in Alberta. Its more mental strain than financial strain but for others it is financial as well.
The fact that Alberta carried the economy for the last 10 years, and yet most Canadians here are going to kick families down because of this? Disguisting. Families are going bankrupt, jobs are a lot harder to come by, yet you are going to kick them down? Does anyone really know the sacrifice people go to, to provide a better future for their families, that they couldn't get ten years ago in the dying industries everywhere else? Sure some people should have saved their money, but no one should be frugal. You have to live your life as well. Obviously everyone tried to live comfortably, but even after three, four, six months to a year, to find decent work in a field that is now being competitive, EI doesn't pay the mortgage, bills, food, etc. Then add kids to that. People laughing at others people's plight are awful, awful people. Be ashamed of yourselves. What are you doing to help families that are in need?
+Steven Simon Alberta did not truly carry the economy, the economy was carried by the Bankers who control the issuance of currency, in this case printing Trillions in China which in turn inflated Oil prices and housing prices for the past decade. EVERY adult in Alberta had plenty of time to prepare since the u.s housing collapse back in 2008. People called me a tin foil hatter when I warned them a Canadian implosion was coming...now I do not look so crazy :)
Ryan FlareFraser When China stops paying for it, the Bankers will allow INDIA to magically print Trillions to keep the illusion propped up for another 10 years. The only way this Banker controlled shit show ends is when the people put it to an end.
it won't just be people putting and end to it market forces will cause an eventual backlash let's face it the first stock market that made orphans into millionaires everyone rushed to that stock pushing the price higher until their is no more demand for the stock and will crash let's face it the only reason that Vancouver and Toronto keep rising is because of demand for housing eventually it becomes too expensive even for foreign investment and once that goes away those prices will tank it may not be in the immediate future china is still and smoggy mess but when it becomes a slightly less smoggy mess their will be less reason for expats to move to Vancouver or toronto
Ryan FlareFraser I understand what you are conveying but the reality is the housing is already past the point of being worth while to foreign investors...We need only look at the million dollar Vancouver shit shacks that have sat empty for years now. This is NOT about investment, this about the World Bankers printing $ and using it to keep their Banking system from coming to a crashing end. It is all a Banker illusion, from new car sales, to home sales, to the art bubble, to Greek bail outs, to the stock bubble, to wars in Iraq, Libya Syria. This is a desperate coordinated attempt by the Banking families to keep full control.
Alberta has to realize that they failed to diversify their economy. They should of built refineries to produce high value oil products like gas & jet fuel.
You mean like the NWR refinery just north of Edmonton, or all the other refineries in and around Edmonton? And just where are we going to send it? East where Irving oil has a monopoly refining saudi oil?
Why aren't the old oil workers telling the new workers about the boom and bust cycles of oil? Why do the young ones think the good times last forever? I guess it really is true that if you don't know your history you are doomed to repeat it.
Alberta will be fine long term, direct access to the American market via pipelines!!!! The blending of Heavy Canadian crude with American light sweet, save multiple billions of $ in converting to refine only American light sweet.. And doubles the amount of time the oil resources last in America...
It used to take two days to get a job in alberta?..........jesus. In ontario (Toronto actually) this guy's job hunting struggles were (and still are) my everyday life. Send out 100 resumes, get 1 call back, do an interview, and never hear from the employer again.........then back to the grindstone. I can sympathize with this dude's plight.
People seem to misunderstand how equalization payments work. First Ottawa collects the money from it's various sources, mainly income taxes, HST and royalties, and then it pays out transfer payments based on a formula that is supposed to equalize the amount of per capita income the provincial governments have. What this has meant is that Ontario and Alberta (and formerly BC) have paid a lot of taxes to Ottawa and got less back (in the case of Alberta nothing), the money went to the other provinces. This is why you hear Albertans harp on it all the time. Traditionally, on a per capita basis, Albertans have paid $4 dollars into the transfer scheme for every $1 Ontarians pay and all the other provinces receive money. This scheme is no longer sustainable. Note that those numbers are per person, Ontario has a much larger population so the totals are similar. Transfer payments (actually called "equalization" payments, were a way to redistribute the wealth from the "have"provinces" to the "have not" provinces so that all Canadians enjoyed the economic prosperity. Originally that meant Alberta, BC, and Ontario paid in and the other provinces got out. Then BC went from "have" to "have not" and Saskatchewan went from "have not" to "have" based on oil production but now it's all flipping around again and Ontario might end up carrying the whole load herself.
All Alberta has to do is shut off the pumps to BC. Once gas runs out in Vancouver or prices double overnight then BC may reconsider a pipeline to the coast.
We had the same problem in Australia during and after the mining boom. Fly in fly out workers made over $150,000 a year in the mines and blew it all without saving anything.
@@ozvulcan In Alberta oil workers bought brand new Ford F150s, new RVs, new homes and brought trucks to carry their new Ford F150.... And in this video clip the guys is whining about he will run his house and support family... Yeah .... one way... SAVE MONEY FOR RAINY DAY, PAL!

Why can't a single one of them acknowledge that they know that oil prices are not dictated by the federal government? Stop blaming Canada for the collapse in oil prices.
I've seen some bad times in Canada in the 44 years I've lived here and I see the look of despair in some of those Albertans faces. Our Prime Minister caused this with his Climate Emergency, Carbon Tax on dirt energy. He has caused division across Canada and confrontation with world trading partners. We have inexperienced people leading this country who don't know what they are doing and because of this they are running Canada into the ground. We have sent a boy to do a man's job running this country and he thinks he is putting on a Drama class for students. If we can get Alberta back to work and stop blocking pipe lines or ways of getting Alberta's oil to market and getting a fair price for their oil then it will be so much better for the whole country.
Bush Wacker He’s right....When times were good, Oil field workers were just throwing $$$ around left and right....big houses, multiple vehicles, hot tubs, snowmobiles, dirt bikes....all things I have never been able to afford. And now that times are tough they wonder where all the $$$ went...??? Give your head a shake snowflakes and join the REAL world.
+Dirty Commie So people that have been laid off for over a year and have been living off of their savings for that time hadn't saved for a rainy day? How long do you expect someone to be able to live off of money they put away? Should everyone in the oil patch in Alberta be able to have money in savings to survive for a few years? Most people of a savings but when you are expected to live off of it with nothing coming in for over a year it disappears fast. What about people that work in retail that have been let go because sales are down and there employees can not afford to pay them and keep the overhead cost of the store running? Not everyone that has been effected by this downfall works in the patch.
It's not that simple. A single family detached home in the outskirts of Calgary starts at 450K even in this depressed oil economy. If you include your travel expenses back/forth to northern Alberta, business expenses, and other life expenses, how many years do you expect savings from your 100K job to last?
I worked in a little town called Rainbow Lake and made over $200 000 a year. Because it's such a small town, they also give you a family home to live in - a taxable benefit. A LOT of the people up there don't save and spend their money on their "toys". One guy had four quads, four snowmobiles, a travel trailer, a trailer for his quands and snowmobiles, a new diesel truck and a new jeep. Before I got a job in oil and gas, I was wondering why it was so hard to get a job in oil and gas. Well, in Rainbow Lake, there are about 4 family groups up there. Some people from one family group are married to people from the other family groups. Half of them are Newfies (not Albertans!) Any one is not related is "an outsider". The oil plant up there hired several people at the same time when I got hired because the company (I won't name it here) opened a new plant in Ft. McMurray. So they took experienced operators from several of their plants to put in their brand new plant and hired new people in the other plants. When the down turn came, "family members" didn't get laid off - just the outsiders. Oil and gas jobs in Alberta are very much for people who "know the right people" and not for other people. Fortunately, I had a good relationship with my previous employer so I was only out of work for a few weeks before I was working again. Yes, Canada needs oil and gas but the industry is full of nepotism. After having worked in oil and gas, I am frankly disgusted by the nepotism and general selfishness of people who work in that industry. (Jobs are only for the friends and relatives of those who already have jobs, no one else.)
My heart goes with all albertans. Yes, the leaders of this country should think more for their fellow citizens rather than those illegal immigrants or those world responsibility climate bullshits.
I voted for Justin, I live in Bc Justin needs to step up and do whatever is needed to help Alberta. I'm a veteran and have been sent to many forien countries to help ppl less fortunate than we r. it's time we help our own.
When the have not provinces have there hands out for money the federal government is there, that's there job. Right now Alberta needs help. And help we should give them. They have paid more than there fair share into the federal pot and it's time to give some back
My heart is with these guys...but when you start having kids, you better have at least 1-2 years of living expenses saved up...its an uncertain world...especially in a commodity based industry with little diversification.
+baller1069 YEP. They call me a LOSER for not buying a house, no new car, no kids and no marriage...I might spank the monkey here and there, But I am Debt free and perfectly positioned for the collapse that Stevie Wonder could have seen coming since 2008 :)
Every province should look after their own. Non of this equal payments crap. How is a province able to grow if they arent givin the chance too.. Quebec wants their independents but they dont mind getting a hand out from Alberta. Quebec needs to bring their province up to the rest and pay Alberta back! - Ontario.
I think it would be a great idea to fund retraining programs for laid off oil workers. Since we are supposedly taking a stand against carbon emissions why not have their retraining fully subsidized if it's related to the renewable energy market. The federal and provincial government could help out.
+Jonathan Lazo BINGO. Imagine investors opening solar and wind power facilities all across the nation. But the blood is not running in the streets (yet), what we are seeing is merely the tip of the iceberg. More people will have to lose everything before they will accept a system reset.
I went through the 80s, as did a lot of others. Now that I am in forced retirement, the young men and women that trained and worked beside are going through hell too. All I can say is, in the 80s we had a chance to take a new path and didn't. We have come full circle. History has repeated it's self and if I have learned one thing, it would be that Alberta should have separated 40 years ago and we should do so now.
Trump wants Alberta as our 51st state, as do many Americans. Secure the right to bear arms and the protections of our constitution. We would welcome you ! 😊😊😊😊😊
Was looking at the comments to see the reaction to this story. I can tell you these people did not live high off the hog, costs are high when times are good, rent, groceries, transportation etc. Folks did have some savings going into the oil price depression, but they are depleted now, it wasn't as if people lived beyond their means. The successful people you see with businesses put investment into those enterprises to fund those entreprises to meet demands, very capital intensive to build some of these business. Now the demand is leaving and or gone, costs are being managed to keep enough employees to service business needs. If you don't understand the logic of the argument, you can see it in the voices and eyes, and fear of the brave participants in this story. I agree if possible, obtain employment outside the oil industry if one spouse works in the oil sector to hedge against cyclical downturns in the future. But do you think current suffering oil workers are looking to recommend the oil industry to their children one day? The hard part about this for me is I see it as entirely unnecessary the oil industry recognized decades ago about the need for export pipelines and tried to make it happen, it hasn't. Canada has elected provincial and federal leaders who line their pockets with wages while letting their own people incur the ideology of fixing a problem of carbon emissions of 1.6% of global pollution. This doesn't mean we don't support evolutionary efforts to address carbon capture. But we don't do it at the expense of a key industry of a country built on the back of resources as a business model.
Which is exactly why the rest of us stayed away. It killed our businesses because everyone moved to Alberta. You didn't care about us and now they're all back trying to get those jobs and trying to blame ot on Trudeau.....really, come on. You're just making excuses. Look at it through other eyes

Energy workers and tradesmen should be migrating to the states for work if they know what's good for them. It's not the most ideal for some but it's better than waiting around in a cold wasteland for things to improve.
Welcome to Alberta where the boom and bust cycle continues strong. Go to work and find out your getting laid off only a couple months in. Time to find another job somewhere else for another company haha.
I think it' s because in good times Alberta is smug and resents having to contribute equalization payments, and in bad times it whines and feels put upon by the rest of Canada.
Pat M right?!? It’s like brain dead non critical thinkers. If it’s not valued then it really is NO LOSS to cut the dead weight sucking us dry. Refreshing change to keep all that money in Alberta to build us back up rather than pay Trudy to give it to his foreign pals and millions of unvetted immigrants with 14 children families.
Province Upset as Canadians say no to pipeline: short sighted Alberten boom vs. Old resources and their undeniable environmental impact forever. Alberta needs to spearhead clean energy and build that infrastructure and lead the country but no, this obsession over oil while knowing is harm is just blind and stubborn.
I like how they are blaming a liberal government for low oil prices they all vote conservative then they want social programs well guess what conservatives dont like social programs if you want help why dont you ask the oil companies for some social programs. Bottom line is low oil prices are not the fault of trudeau your lucky we have a liberal government who accually believe in social programs so they can help you guys with million dollar homes and 100 thousand dollar trucks and all the other little toys you guys bought with your less then highschool education.
+Canadian Concentrates Well said! Warren in this video even admits to never having had to actively look for a job before, and now he's finding it hard. Boo hoo. He should grow the hell up. Also, whose decision is it to have a family, the Liberal party? That Ken guy should shut the hell up, he's not even UNEMPLOYED!! Poor planning on these guys' part is not the responsibility of everyone else, sorry. When times are booming, you put money away for the times like now when the bust is happening. Its a cycle that has been happening for decades now. Diversify and be willing to take a job that you previously might have thought beneath you.
+Canadian Concentrates where in the video does it say the federal govt is to blame for low oil prices, at what time in the video so I can watch it thanks
Blaine gullion They imply it over and over all you have to do is watch plus i live in south east sask. I hear the same arument every day. So if your trying to imply that they aren't implying that you may need to watch it over again.
I hear that all the time from lefties, "don't blame the govt for low oil prices" its a weak stupid argument, I have never in my life heard anyone say that, if you think theyre implying it its out of frustration, nobody in Canada thinks the govt is responsible...come on.. seriously
Blaine gullion lol you obviously have never been to conservative alberta or saskatchewan or you've been under a rock. Or maybe your just pretend not to hear it.
How the f do you save money when government takes 40 percent inports immigrants lower wages increases competition for rent amd housing also allows dirty money for overseas
20 years ago everyone was saying "OH GOD, Please give me another oil boom and I promise not to PISS IT AWAY !" Well, God gave you another oil boom, and guess what you did with it: You pissed it away. There you go.
How many pipelines did Harper build? That's right zero. Yet nobody drove their truck across the country or wrote letters telling the Conservative government that they were "ruining the country". Alberta was all about Ontario not getting transfer payments when manufacturing was being gutted across that province. You get what you give.
No one should feel embarrassed. I have never worked in O/G, but lived and went to school and worked part time in Alberta for a long time. It absolutely sucks being unemployed, but most people don't think you should feel ashamed, and understand that this is out of your control. There's nothing wrong with having to lean on friends and family for a little while to get back on your feet. We all have had to at one point or another. Alberta will get through this. Don't blame the NDP, Don't Blame Trudeau. Don't Blame yourselves. Wild Rose country is tough as nails, and it's only a matter of time before people start stepping up and leading the way through the gloom.
couldnt agree more with all these comments. it was okay when people in ontario lost everything because of free trade that benefitted alberta. then all we heard was what heroes they were for carrying the country! hows it fell to live in hardship and go from a living wage to minimum wage? isnt it lovely?
This is very sad to see but it's the reality of the market. Gotta prepare. boooms don't last forever when you made the big bucks should've saved because now it's the bust. That's a general lesson. The majority of Canadians didn't have even a luxury of the boom for decades of that kinda of Industry we're all mostly getting by like you are now. Alberta shouldn't have such a deficit where's all the oil money gone, huge huge sums of money made. This is a wake up call in general gotta Prep for the future, oil has got to be phased out anyways, it's gonna be painful for humanity globally, we must adjust , it didn't need to be this extreme the oil companies knew 30 years.
It is just plain ignorance, that we as Canadians use Saudi oil, while we cannot get Alberta’s oil to market. Everyone I talk to in BC where I live, get the crisis Alberta is in, mind you I do not talk to leftists and Greens, these people need to get over their holy than thou attitude, people in Alberta deserve better, we Canadians need to support Alberta, if you as a Canadian do not believe in Alberta, shame on you!!!!!
@@sherry5455 Alberta oil require heavy dilution. It's carp oil. Hence only market is usa with refineries capable. Canada refineries are 70 years old...this has happened 3 Times now to AB...60s...80s....and now...they just don't get it and don't learn
its time for Alberta to become a 52nd. State.....and then things will change for Alberta would change big time....the pipeline will be built, and the investment and job creation would be amazing......enough of the bull crap Canada
On our knees is where the whole nation needs to get sooner than later so we can rebuild our nation on the foundation of the Word of God as declared in 2 Chronicles 7:14. Prayers and genuine care for all especially Alberta in this time. The Lord knows our whole land needs healing and we forget Dominion Day was established by our founding fathers to remind us not to forget God in our prosperity and blessings. Psalm 72:8 His Dominion shall be from sea to sea. The answer is in the manual - God’s Word and Relationship with God. Not religion, find a Bible Believing Church and plug in. God will bless us as we turn to Christ. God bless you!
Alberta will not fall . Alberta will never fall . We have good people in the west . Everything happens for a reason . Maybe god wants us to come closer together .
Albertans will work together to survive the oil bust. Just like we worked together during the oil boom too. Instead of an endless series of only protests only. Some economists say that promoting tourism might help diversify businesses in the province.. I hope Indigenous leaders here can come up with more traditions to celebrate co-operation between the peoples aho have settled here for good. The state of Minesota in the U.S. shows us a good example on how to encourage that sort of evolving of Indigenous traditions instead of experts there doing things and saying thnings and writing things to further divide peoples. That will succeed in attracting both more tourism and investment in our province too.
I truly understand what is happening to you. The same as happened to me and others. When the shipping to Europe crashed with the fishing industry the East Coast suffered the same as you. When Manufacturing was shipped overseas to Asia We Crashed even when central was the cash box. It is not fun to go through, but you are not alone nor have you ever been. That may be where the anger stems from. We Have all faced it and will again. But put a lot of the Blame on the business that lead us here, as well as government. But Remember Government decisions are based on input from the Business Community who Lied to all of us.
I worked in the oilfield services industry in the manufacturing sector. The company had multiple rounds of layoffs and then closed the company entirely.
The hatred and vitriol from one Canadian to another. You're all so depraved. Have some decency, have some compassion. Both East and West. Everyone is too busy pointing fingers. Discuss possible solutions, not magnify the shitty problems. How can we stand United when we're too busy squabbling like siblings? Anybody that expresses inflammatory rhetoric should be ashamed of themselves. No matter what side of the argument you are on, there are still real people, facing real hardships. And you want to incite anger? You shame everything Canada aspires to be. And are unworthy of the title Canadian. Civility Anyone? Then lets stand together and solve the issues, instead of cat fighting on the internet. P.S. if you want to fall back on any kind of argument related to "it's the internet get used to it" then you've already lost.
+weazz How do you suggest we get Canada back on track again? These booms are artificially created and the busts are also artificially created by the Bankers who control the Major Global Corporations.
Oil prices will go up shortly as fracking oil production drops 80 percent in the first year of production and then the limited word supply will cost much more.
The fall in oil prices is due to OPEC. They set the prices and if an exporting country is willing to sell for cheap due to the fact they are able to keep overhead low then they could manipulate the market. UAE did this to the Canada and other exporting counties. All this guys in the vedio are asking for is help from the Fed. By means of pumping some money into alberta economy. That way they can keep there head above water. Till things pick up again. Which I am in total support.
I was hoping for far more statistics from CBC. This piece is very narrow, and it's too easy to poke holes in it from any perspective. Tons of Canadians are experiencing harsher struggles than this. Is this supposed to be representative of Albertans? Is it?
In an idea world California, Washington, Oregon, and BC would be one country, Pacific Provinces, Sask. Montana, Alberta, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, another The Energy Provinces. Then add Manitoba to the Dakota's, Iowa, Kansas, as a country of Prairie provinces. Just as with the American East, the Canadian East doesn't understand the people in the West. These people need help a public job program to take people with building skills and put them to work on public works, roads, bridges, etc Alberta has been a revenue generator for the entire country, some of that money needs to come back, Mr Trudeau seems to fly into BC skipping over Alberta, mentally also. From the people of the American West, we understand, we have been there before as well as right now. You are in our minds, our thoughts
If only Harper hadn't slashed the environmental review process for major projects, the courts wouldn't have rejected the environmental review on the pipeline, and it wouldn't have been locked up in a big court case while Alberta struggled. Root cause analysis points to Harper and the Conservatives as being the reason we don't have a pipeline. Technically the Liberals could have tried to overrule the court decision, but that also could have become a supreme court battle over whether an environmental review, that failed to adequately study the costs of a major spill, is sufficient for a major project.
it's sad you can see the depression and anxiety just eating away at him. It is the worst feeling you could ever have.
Things are looking up now.
good to hear dude, keep at it
I'm, needless to say, very happy for you and your family I'm from Ontario and want all Canadians to reach their potential OIl is a difficult field to work in as global markets sometimes fluctuate for good and sometimes for bad, but we are all in this together We are Canadian and will get past this.
What happens when Alberta falls? The east laughs and they still take their payments from Alberta.
And don't forget that Alberta laughed during the Great Recession and called Ontario a "Have Not Province."
If Quebec would give back the 192 billion Alberta gave them ALBERTA would be just fine!!!
Was it a loan?
They are a welfare province they know no better.

Thank-you my sister!
Working at suncors fort hills project in 2017/18 was one of the best times of my life! Thanks to Alberta!!!
You should take a look at Detroit and learn not to rely on one industry. Nothing lasts forever.
Took the words out of my mouth! Very true
SEPARATION

Boom and bust. Save your money during the boom; expect the bust.
Albertans never think that ahead. They blame all their problems on the east.
@ fredguy2 -- why wouldn't we? Both Trudeaus caused/is causing the majority of our problems. Sr brought in the NEP (yes, we still remember), and Jr had to buy a 50 year old pipeline in order to expand it... or will he?
@ Gott Mit Uns -- actually, a lower dollar makes our oil less expensive for purchasers
There already getting a deal on it up to half the market price
@@fredguy2 It's been 5 years now. How long could you go without an income?
most of the "extractive" industries are cyclic in nature . one should always use the "oil money" to establish a plan B , not buy a new pickup .
Not just a new puckup! Gotta have at least one new high-end skidoo, an ATV, and a big expensive boat!
glad i went to school and didn't run to Alberta like most of my friends
I got a good 3 years in Alberta, although I am now looking for another job. I'm sure I'll find something but maybe not as high paying. But, I managed to get a huge down payment on a house, owning a house in Alberta is huge, because houses are so expensive. Rental income is good, my renter pays pretty much the whole cost of the house for me. I can live on the cheap for a while. If oil comes back I'll be all over it again.
The people who never saved money and bought quads and boats and shit, and lived like rock stars are the ones who are screwed.
But can you return your portion of the transfer payments back to Alberta please?
You're getting it now, thank the feds

@@jejeroy she's gone already... She found someone new
Im sorry man.
+EvilShredder Exactly! quickest prov to get cocky and the quickest to cry for help from the prov's they hate on.
4cooey Some people need to search which foreign folks OWN the oil companies. And how gas prices are set and by whom.
It's not just Albertans. Many people from the rest of Canada came out here to work and send that money back to their families in other provinces.
Some of those people left their offspring behind here in Alberta while they had the continuity bias while believing we would always be doing well here. That is okay. Albertans are resilient. Albertans no matter what minority they are from know how to be co-operatve with the rest while being safety minded to help prevent loss of human life too. That is our take away from the oil boom which is going to last until kingdom come.
build more refineries so you can sweeten the crude and get a price closer to the US price
Venezuela it's not happening. ...oh and we know how Venezuela turned out
Trudeau won't allow that. He wants Alberta CRUSHED so it will never stand up again.
That's a plan so lucrative the riches apparently would be to embarrassing for any company to have to report! Lol!
All you people commenting from Ontario and Quebec (as well as the producer and interviewer in this program) should understand ONE THING;
We would be fine, even with cheap oil, if you wouldn't politically interfere with our industry. Stop blocking the pipelines
Republic of Western Canada. Yes boy!
there is opposition in BC that is against the export of oil, apparently alot of first nations groups along the proposed pipeline area appose anymore pipelines and the export of our oil also BC's government dont want anymore pipelines so how would western separation solve that?
Oil prices go up and oil prices go down. If you can't figure that out you shouldn't be in the oil business. Next time throw a couple bucks in the bank for a downturn. You didn't complain when people were getting ripped off at the gas pump.
talk about ignorance! WOW!
I'm so sorry to hear of how you are suffering. Prayers for all of you. Your friend in New Jersey, USA. There is no security these days anywhere.
+Barbara Harsen I saw what happened to you Americans in 2008 when your housing bubble collapsed, I warned fellow Canadians that the crash was coming to Canada and they laughed in my face...Well looks like I get the last laugh!
I feel for this guy, it's like that all over the prairies.
Drop the puck in the World Juniors so we can win Gold Again?
I do recall how arrogant Albertans were during the oil boom. I suppose it is the human flaw of not thinking in the long-term. In such a humbling bust, what is their long term now, and what wisdom can they impart to other provinces over the evolution of their worldview?
9:40 That bartender is smart. He went through tough times in the 80s... so he opened a bar... which will make him money in good times aswell as bad times.
Hello from the east coast of Canada Halifax Nova Scotia
Alberta, we support you
Oil will go up again, hang tight Alberta and next time save for the low times.
4cooey I completely agree!!
So Sad Alberta residents in 1980 rallied against a national energy program, and demanded a free market system!
+Ernest Semotiuk The NEP was one of the things that broke Albertas back in the 1980s, exactly what the then liberal government wanted.
What is the culprit now? For the last couple of years, oil prices have been in the gutter. It is very likely that it is foreign government policies.
@Tiger J youre not too bright are you?
Alberta stay strong 💪 You are a backbone of this country and we support you here in eastern B.C
I feel for this guy because I was in the same situation just like many men in Alberta. Its more mental strain than financial strain but for others it is financial as well.
Do you still work on drilling rig?
+mookixox toronto and vancouver have yet to fall just imagine the carnage that will happen when china stops paying for it
Ryan FlareFraser When China stops paying for it, the Bankers will allow INDIA to magically print Trillions to keep the illusion propped up for another 10 years.
We could've done what Norway did, we are so resource rich in our country, small population . Money to the people too not just the corporations
Lol! Your try a genius!

I can sympathize with this dude's plight.
imagine being an older white male finding work in this far left radicalized Canada.....imagine!
So they made 100,000s $ working in oil fields, and they never saved anything, WTF?
We had the same problem in Australia during and after the mining boom. Fly in fly out workers made over $150,000 a year in the mines and blew it all without saving anything.

@Gott Mit Uns Most oil workers aren't native to alberta
Life lesson learned, all good times come to an end.
All these oil patch workers were making upwards of $100,000/year. Maybe they should have saved some of it for a rainy day
+Dirty Commie So people that have been laid off for over a year and have been living off of their savings for that time hadn't saved for a rainy day? How long do you expect someone to be able to live off of money they put away? Should everyone in the oil patch in Alberta be able to have money in savings to survive for a few years? Most people of a savings but when you are expected to live off of it with nothing coming in for over a year it disappears fast. What about people that work in retail that have been let go because sales are down and there employees can not afford to pay them and keep the overhead cost of the store running? Not everyone that has been effected by this downfall works in the patch.
yup lol. i would have that's for sure . hell i do that with what i got!
Trevor Stolz you are spot on! I experienced and regularly seen that EXACT thing happen time after time after time!

Blaine gullion Okay, but how? How is he helping them?
Blaine gullion Well is that what you think happens in central canada? Did you know that Ontario was a have province all the way until 2009?
When the have not provinces have there hands out for money the federal government is there, that's there job. Right now Alberta needs help. And help we should give them. They have paid more than there fair share into the federal pot and it's time to give some back
Rhiney Maceachern If they need money create a sales tax. Other provinces have to deal with them.
If oil prices are in the tank, how come gas prices at rye pump are 30% inflated?

You asked the question how much Alberta matters to the rest of Canada, from what I'm hearing not much, it is time for Alberta to separate.
That is impossible and will never happen. If it were possible, it would have happened already.
