  • Every three minutes in the U.S., someone visits an emergency room with a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to food. One experimental treatment called "oral immunotherapy" is confronting allergy dangers head-on, and it's part of a clinical trial at Stanford University led by immunologist and researcher Dr. Kari Nadeau. Dr. Holly Phillips explores this promising treatment some are calling a cure.

My allergies are terrible. I can't eat Dairy, Nuts (all), Wheat, and Eggs. But I still live a normal life. I started OIT a while back for milk/dairy, I can now comfortably drink and consume milk. I am still working on everything else though. I stopped going to the doctor for the treatment as it was too expensive. So my parents helped me do it on my own.

Desensitization used to be called, 'shut up and eat everything on your plate' and that doctor probably invoices $100,000 to the insurance provider, which jacks up everyone's insurance. their price justification is that its probably cheaper than an ER visit for anaphylactic shock by a penny. what a bunch of crooks.

At timestamp 1:41 , they say that at the start of the treatment, they give most patients a series of injections to lower the immune response. That sounds smart. The reason I mention it is that I am wondering if they also do this with the normal way most allergists treat patients now? Also, do they just bypass having Scratch tests done? Is this radically different? Does it work? Is it covered by most insurances? I don’t see many comments on it either.

@@WarriorCODM-nn9vw only walnuts? You’re lucky. 😫 I’m allergic to shrimp, crawfish, lobster, walnuts, and hazelnuts. And I found out my wheat allergy is very mild. Hazelnut is extreme though.
