From what I understand, the skids allowed for larger fuel capacity, since the landing gear pods could now hold extra tanks. They also eliminate the mechanical complexity of the retractable gear.
I remember when Careflite had the 222. Fire department learned you don't leave an open trauma box near during landing or take off. I found equipment near the a month later
@@hoenircanute so if I had a helo business in Louisiana with like 6 bell 222s and used them as both charter service helos and search and rescue I can run landing wheels for the charter flights and skids for the S&R and be able to land in swampy areas.
@@brandonh5201 This is not a field mod. They come from the factory like this, and it is not a simple or easy task to switch from one to the other. If you bought a UT, it wouldn't have the hydraulic lines, landing get mounts, and landing gear servos installed, nor the landing gear lever, and position indicators in the cockpit. It would be easier to go the other way from wheels to skids but then you'd not have the extra fuel capacity that the sponsons would hold for not having the wheel wells, so it really is a mission type of thing. Get what you need the most because it would not be worth the money to try to swap them back and forth.

You can break every bone in your body and survive, just like Evil Knievel. But break your head and you're dead. Got to protect the brains. Bikers call it the Brain Bucket.
Underpowered, needs both engines just to fly, one is Not a backup for the other, lose 1 You're going Down! Lycoming should've never attempted turbines.
We had a pilot fly a bell 222 (or 430) in the williamson county IL airport on one engine, believe he said he had a bird strike. So its possible to fly on 1 but its not something you want to-do by choice lol.

My most favorite part of helicopters start up's. The moment when the entire craft shakes hard before going into a balanced vibration.

How east is it to switch from skids to wheels in these?
A polish mechanic can do it in less than 5 minutes in air.

What was the reason for the Version with the Skids instead of retracts? Save Money & Weight?
Supes Me at a guess, I'd say the requirement to put it down on those mountains featured behind it. Bit harder with wheels
Ah Makes sense
@@SupesMe I understand is for more fuel capacity
@@BREC07 yes.
For medical verisons simply because they land in all kinds of odd places, fields highways rooftops ect, for a privet owned one....not a clue.
What kind of departure is that?
probably a hover test.
@ disagree. A hover test can be at least a minute before departure. Hover doesnt have to be in the same spot
@ agree to disagree
@ ahhh no. Nice try.
