    Urbanmech is actually one of the few where the design isn't aesthetic. Same with the Atlas. It's built like a trashcan to have that 360 degree torso rotation, which is extremely useful in an urban environment.

    I love the Urby because despite what some people think, its not a “its so bad so its funny haha” it’s glorious because with its loadout and how the tabletop game is balanced, there is always a chance for the Urby to punch up and kill something way above its tonnage. This trash can ended up actually being one of my all time fav mech designs. I think it showcases a certain strength of Battletech designs, which is their willingness to heavily vary a mech's silhouette to represent their role and design to create something that feels very unique and fun while conventionally ugly and goofy looking.
    I think other mecha franchises fall into the trap of needing everything to look shiny and have sharp edges everywhere, leading to rosters that look very samey in comparison.

    In the mod I play (BTA Universe) for the Battletech turn based computer game, there's an even meme-ier version of the Urbanmech. They've almost quadrupled its engine output and therefore speed, and replaced the weapon with a COIL - a weapon that does more damage and produces more heat the faster the 'mech is moving. But they didn't make it capable of sinking any more heat. So basically this thing will surprise the hell out of you by running halfway across the map and then killing one of your 'mechs, and then melting. It's a pretty rare variant, so it's surprising every time. But it has taught me to carefully check every Urbanmech I encounter.

    Urbies are super deadly, especially the 60L at close range, its so tiny while being able to deliver a knockout blow that can 1 shot assault mechs if it hits the cockpit or just take off a torso piece if shot in the back because mechs usually arent as armored in the rear

  • @WolfHreda
    @WolfHreda 20 часов назад +1

    For reference to the UrbanMech's standard configuration and the armament thereof: 10 points of damage is arguably the gold standard of Battletech combat. It's not enough to bullseye a standard cockpit, but it's enough to put a solid chunk of damage on anything. Whether two medium lasers, an AC/10, a PPC, or (for the Clans) an ER Large Laser or Large Pulse Laser. Ten damage is always a good use of tonnage. Especially if you have more than one unit putting out ten or more damage. Because 20 or more damage forces your target to make a Piloting Skill Roll, the potential failure of which will cause them to fall over. This damages armor, possibly internal structure, and can damage the pilot. This is why the most iconic machines almost always have a 10+ damage gun. The Awesome, Timber Wolf, Mad Dog, Marauder, Warhammer, Warhawk, Dire Wolf, Banshee... Ten damage is never something to scoff at.

    The urbanmech is one of those mechs that you might think you can ignore -right up until one walks up on you and cores your reactor with a single brutal back shot using an AC/20.
    It’s incredibly tough for its weight class and cost. It can also punch well above its weight class in the right conditions.

    Also the Urbie is so slow because the OG tabletop rules were BRUTAL when it came to paved terrain. The Urbie goes as fast as possible without requiring piloting skill checks and seatbelt checks due to asphalt being so slick in comparison to other types of terrain. And since fall damage is not only brutal but can kill the pilot, the design is remarkably well thought-out. The damage for falling over on level terrain is tonnage/10 * (levels fallen +1) rounded up. So a 65 ton mech that falls takes 7 points of damage. Crashing into buildings and skidding can cause this damage to be worse.

  • @TheMongral
    @TheMongral 20 часов назад +1

    For context: in MW5 Mercs, My target priority in an assault mech is: Other assaults, then check for Urbies, then Heavies, then other mechs/threats. The Urbie is that dangerous in its niche. The average Urbie will, if given the chance, do more damage to me than other mechs on par with mine, and god the little trashcans are shockingly durable for a light mech.
    But really, any mech that runs a primary weapon that can typically serve as a centrepiece on heavy and assault mechs or, god forbid, the AC20 variant, immediately demands your attention, and considering mechs typically run around 60-70% of the armor on the front part of the mech, if an Urbie gets behind you unnoticed then you’re probably about to either lose something, if not get taken out entirely.
    Unlike the Charger, which personifies all the negatives of the Urbie, the Urbanmech is a mech that shows memes can be quite effective, while still being memes. Not to mention the insanity of being able to trade 2-3 1.4 million trashcans for one 10-15 million assault pretty reliably. The Return on investment with a squad of urbies can be nuts. (By contrast, you’ll probably facepalm so hard when you get to the Charger. What a miserably unfortunately designed mech.)

    Having played MW5 Mercs, I can say with confidence that you will go from "oh it's just an Urbie" to "OH CRAP ITS AN URBIE" in VERY short order. Especially when it whiffs a few huge shells from that AC/20 past your cockpit.
    Damned trashcans are as dense as tungsten too. All that armor is on this tiny little mech, which means it's weirdly resilient. Not exactly made of paper.
    I salute all the NPC PDF soldiers driving these, and go out of my way to try and keep them alive till the end of my missions when I know they're there. Those people are doing the job with what they can afford, and don't deserve to be mocked as fodder.

    For context on how slow 32 KPH is for a LIGHT MECH.
    The only mech that matches the speed is the Annihilator, which is an Assault Mech armed with enough dakka to delete most anything in front of it and the armor to make up for being so ponderously slow.
    Of course, in a city this thing is a TERROR, with an Autocannon 10 it means that any cockpit shots will DEMAND a roll to see if the pilot managed to avoid becoming hamburger staining the seat and internal components so even Assaults have to tread carefully in a city.

    The urby has a tendency to one of two things. Die very quickly or do something that shouldn’t be possible for its weight. Usually the former. It’s in all of those memes because the majority of the community loves the little guy because just about everyone has what I call “The Urbanmech story” where it murders something when it shouldn’t have, but at the same time everyone knows it’s fundamentally a terrible unit. As he says its only use is to have a bunch of them swarm a target when there’s lots of cover. Cities, hilly terrain, large dense forests.

  • @Broomer52
    @Broomer52 3 часа назад

    The general gist is the Urbie isn’t a Mecha, it’s a mobile Weapons Platform and it’s really good at being that.

  • @dagonofthedepths

    So for reference the AC/10 is a 12 ton cannon and yeah it seriously hurts. Quoting Sarna here, "The UrbanMech packs a powerful punch for its size. The standard version carries an Imperator-B AC/10 in its right arm and a Harmon Light small laser in the left arm for suppressing infantry as well as a backup weapon. With these two weapons the UrbanMech can constantly harass, or if piloted by an experienced enough MechWarrior, down 'Mechs up to twice its own size. A single ton of ammo for the autocannon, located in the right torso, leaves little endurance for a prolonged fight, though it fits in perfectly with the hit-and-run nature of the 'Mech; one way or another most observers agree the UrbanMech is good for about two minutes of combat."
    That's why that niche is so small. It's only good at short city ambushes where it can have the time to waddle back to base for resupply constantly. Also, it has that issue if it tries to fight any other city fighter or really heavy line mech in a straight up fight it's in serious trouble.
    All in all it's a pretty horrible mech even in universe but really every mech, even if bad has at least 1 thing it's good at even if that thing is unintended.

    Conventional assets like tanks, VTOL's, and infantry are also good to consider if you're building an army on a budget, but if you specifically want a mech for urban defense that will be cheap and reliable to acquire, maintain, repair, upgrade, and even replace, you go with the Urbanmech.
    Mind you, if you want a light mech for conventional light mech roles, DO NOT use the urbanmech. By light mech (20 ton to 35 ton range) standards, 97kph is usually considered on the slow end.
    As for its base firepower, they're low tech options that make up a sizable portion of the mech's total mass, with the AC10 weighing 12 tons, a ton of AC10 ammo (10 shots), and finally a half ton small laser. There better options for the weight even in introtech, but this is simple, cheap, and adequate for being an unwelcome surprise even to assaults.
    On armor, 6 tons of standard is very good on an introtech 30 tonner, but given the low speed, it's going to be hit a lot more.
    The AC20 variant bumps you down to four tons to fit the cannon, which it can only carry 5 shots for.
    LBX autocannons can fire either the standard normal ammo of normal autocannon in the same class size, or they can fire a spread of pellets.
    Pulse Lasers: heavier than standard lasers in exchange for a substantial boost in hit probability. Also, SPLs are fantastic against infantry.
    MRM: Medium Range Missile. Comes in 10, 20, 30, and 40 tube sizes. The name of the game here compared to other missile pods is volume of fire. Guidance systems were sacrificed to cram more rounds into the launchers and ammo bins. Each hit is 1 point of damage.
    RAC: interestingly enough, the RAC was developed after the clan invasion by the Inner Sphere, with the clans taking a while to catch up. You can fire up to 6 times a turn, with heat building accordingly.. Also, firing multiple rounds per turn risks a jam, with the odds of jamming increasing based on how many rounds you fire in a turn.
    Arrow IV: heavy artillery missile. Comes with a wide variety of ammo types (as do many ammo dependent systems), but the most dramatic variant is the Davy Crockett tip, which weighs 5 times a much as normal ammo for game balance.
    But the best weapon in the Urbanmech arsenal is being underestimated. Other mobile turret type designs tend to draw more attention.

    An AC/10 probably won't kill anything with a single shot, but Urbanmechs rarely fight alone. You're not going to be ambushed by one Urbanmech, you're going to be Ambushed by a LANCE of urbanmechs. That's FOUR AC/10's all firing on you at once, possibly from multiple different directions so no matter which way you face you're going to get shot in the back.

    The 85 tons Battlemaster Assault mech peaks at 64km/h, while the 100 ton KGC-000 King Crab and AS7-D Atlas can both go at 54km/h.
