The guy in Boney M is such a great dancer. He was way ahead of his time dance/performance wise. He deserves more respect in dance and live performance ability. He makes them what they are
It's so cool to see people getting into Boney M in 2021! My aunt is actually one of the background singers (the woman with the braids!), the coolest aunt ever. Thank you for spreading the disco love and shedding light on such an important part on Black music history!
Bella, Liz Mitchell was just in my hometown of Toronto Canada last night and I had the privilege of being there. 70 years old and still killing it vocally. She didn’t sound much different than she did here in 1979. I am an ‘88 baby but my Dad had the Nightflight To Venus album on cassette tape. I wore it out as a kid and have loved Boney M since.
The song was inspired by a real woman called Ma Barker and her sons, who were at the top of the most wanted in the 1930s. Ma Barker and her son Fred were killed after a 45 minutes gunfight by the FBI.
Boney M was actually a West German group because they were managed from West Germany. The musicians and performers in the group were all from different Caribbean nations. Their best song IMHO was ''Ra Ra Rasputin'' and I'd love to see this beautiful woman RogueRxyce react to it.
Boney M were German because they were Frank Farian's project. He played most of the stuff and did the male voice. The performers are good dancers, but only one of the ladies actually sang.
But he was never allowed to be heard: The first recording of Boney M had come out before there was a lineup. It was more or less a toy project by producer Frank Farian. When there was the first request of a TV station for "them" to appear on a show, he had to hurriedly get a lineup whose outer appearance would fit the music and the name of the band. All female members were after a while allowed to sing their parts themselves. The guys voice timbre was so different from Frank Farian's that his mic was always muted on live appearances, and instead Farian's studio recording was played in playback.
The guy was called "The king of disco" and he really was and about this song: It was inspired from a story of a woman which had 4 sons back in 30's, she robbed many banks and she finnally was killed with her sons, the producer (Frank Farian, It's a german producer) found this story interesting. Much Boney M. songs were inspired from true stories (Ma Baker, El Lute, Rasputin and much more) I hope those ideas helped you a little bit, I know what I'm talking about because I am a big fan of this group since I was a little kid. And a little fun fact: the "Ma Ma Ma Ma" from Lady Gaga's Poker Face was inspired from Ma Baker.
Boney M. was a Euro-Caribbean vocal group created by German record producer Frank Farian, who was the group's primary songwriter. Originally based in West Germany, the four original members of the group's official line-up were Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell, a performing artist from Aruba. The group was formed in 1976 and achieved popularity during the disco era of the late 1970s. Since the 1980s, various line-ups of the band have performed with different personnel. The band has sold around 80 million records worldwide and is known for international hits including "Daddy Cool", "Ma Baker", "Belfast", "Sunny", "Rasputin", "Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord" and "Rivers of Babylon".[3
Frank Farian is also the producer behind 'Milli Vanilli', where he also employed lip-syncing dancers to front the act. Personally, I don't mind that he used models and dancers to front the groups, while the real talent behind the music was in the studio. But it sucks for anyone who bought into the stage performers as being the real talent behind the music, when they had very little do to with the creation of these tracks.
we have a friend called Mark Baker. When we went to a club and this song came on, we would sing "Ma Ma Ma Ma - Mark Baker!" hilarity ensued, and for me, this NEVER got old.

Boney M was Frank Farians band, the 3 that actually sang are Frank, Marcia Barret and Liz Mitchell(Bobby only mimed to Frank's singing for many years until he was allowed to record vocals in the 1980''s, so the male voice you hear in most of the videos that you will see is Frank's). Yes, as a german kid in the 90`s i grew up with boney m through my parents. Now it has nostalgic value for me.
