  • This video discusses all the details behind how we plant our alfalfa fields.
When planting alfalfa there is a lot to be considered. From what time of year to plant, to the depth of the seeds and the equipment used.
We cover a lot of ground in this video:
Field Preparation: Discussed the process of preparing the field for planting alfalfa, including past crop rotations and the decision to plant alfalfa in June despite the typical preference for planting earlier in the year.
The field in this video had previously been used for three-way grain and corn. The decision was made to plant alfalfa directly instead of waiting for another grain crop to finish. Preparation involved ripping, disking, and roller harrowing to create a suitable seedbed.
Planting Equipment: We give a detailed description of the hydraulic drive planter used for seeding. Hydraulic drive planters allow precise control over seed placement. We also explain the advantages over ground-driven planters, including accurate seed metering. Calibration of the planter was performed to ensure the correct seeding rate.
Seeding Process: We discuss the steps involved in seeding alfalfa, including setting the correct depth and seed rate. Target seeding rate was 20 pounds per acre at a depth of ¼ inch. We also discuss the importance of proper depth control to ensure seed viability and the adjustments made to packing wheels to control seeding depth.
Technology in Use: We outline the utilization of GPS and onboard computer systems for precision planting. We also go over the GPS system used for accurate row placement and minimizing skips or overlaps, as well as the computer system monitors seed usage and the RTK signal that provides provides sub-inch accuracy for row spacing.
Field Management: We go over the importance of field conditions and moisture management. Soil preparation aimed at creating a tilth that supports good seed-to-soil contact and discuss the impact of soil compaction and water infiltration on seed germination, as well as roller harrowing and soil moisture considerations to prevent crusting.

This farming thing is a huge learning curve. Good luck I know the price of hay has dropped like crazy. It is hard to pay the bills at 100 per ton. I hope your hay does this year.

Have a property that only gets 10 inches of annual precipitation. And is covered in sage brush if removed and cleared would I be able to dry farm alfalfa? Trying to find someone to dig a well but everyone I talk to doesn't have equipment to go that deep

That is a great question! Alfalfa needs around 48 inches of annual precipitation to be successful. You'll definitely want to get some type of irrigation on it to be safe.
