“Call me friend, but keep me closer”, always to me referred a bit to the saying “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”. Like he tells her one thing about their relationship, but his actions says otherwise.
To me it says like, ‘Hey , cool, we’re friends, buddy! BUT please hopefully you think about me at 3am too.’ Call me friend but keep me closer ❤️ And I think “and I’ll call you when the party’s over.” means that she’s in a time of crisis and not really able to get in a relationship at the moment, but wants to. “The party” is sort of like if you got into a car accident or caught in a hurricane and on the phone with the person and say “IM SORRY IM GOING TO HAVE TO CALL YOU BACK AFTER THE AMBULANCES LEAVE.”
You basically nailed the meaning of the song and video in your interpretation. Great job! You're really good at figuring out the meaning of songs and predicting where they're going to go. Loving the content and the channel as a whole.
That drink reminds me when I used to work in ER at registration. I remember gong into the ER rooms to get some info and sometimes I would see patients holding a styrofoam cup in black liquid and I knew they were suicidal. The black liquid is known as ‘Activated Charcoal’ helps them absorb the drugs in the gut for overdose. And they were always young women in their teen or early 20s.
Not *always* female (but I'm sure you're 90% right). The video does remind me very much of that though, and the emotional vibe of emptiness and hopelessness is identical. It was a very long time ago.
@@WyndStrykeyes, not always, just very often. everyone is aware of the statistic that men die by suicide more often, but not everyone is aware that women actually attempt much more often than men, they just tend to pick more easily "salvageable" methods such as overdose, or self mutilation.
Did an amazing job Tom picking up on all the symbolism I didn’t even notice it when I’ve first seen this music video. Have a good super bowl Sunday. Perfect time to hang out with the family and eat good food.
This is maybe my favourite song from Billie, because many people can relate to this song in different ways. Your reaction is one that I didn't think of yet so thank you.
Fun fact: the black stuff actually ran in and then out of her eyes. There‘s a making of and in there you can see how hurtful this really must‘ve been. Crazy that she went through that just to make the video perfect. Goes to show how much she really wants to bring across the point.
My favorite song and video of hers. Great reaction! Insane to think she was only 16... And she came up with the idea for the video by herself even earlier. Such a talent. I'm glad you're enjoying her stuff, because it is all worth listening too.
I Honestly wish I had Tom as a therapist my psychologist and psychiatrist just riddled me with pills and shit which led to my addictions which fucked my life up. I feel like Tom would be alot better
Yeah, the one time I ever went to the VA for crippling anxiety and depression, they basically rushed me out of there with a bottle of pills (which didn't do anything at all). And so I paid out of pocket to see someone else. She seemed nicer and at least pretended to listen... then brushed me off with a different bottle of pills... which also did nothing for my problems. This is the sad state of ALL medicine today... they listen for a few minutes, identify your symptoms, then try to prescribe drugs that cover up those symptoms... while largely ignoring the underlying problems that CAUSED the symptoms. It's like a mechanic that hears a loud rattle in your car's engine... and tells you to install a louder stereo to mask the noise.
I’m 44 years old..and I’m an enormous Billie fan. Just saw her live for the first time on Sunday the 6th of Feb. it was amazing. She performed this song too.
I know I don't watch every video but I do enjoy being able to come back at any time and watch a new video. You're so down to earth and an open minded person, able to understand what these younger artists are trying to convey and what the younger generation as whole experiences. Thank you for doing what you do
I'm new here. Watched your other Billie videos and I'm loving your channel. The deep talks about the means behind the lyrics. It's super cool to see how a professional interprets these songs.
always love your videos i dont go to therapy anymore i grew up in foster care most of my life my parents were drug addicts and i was beaten and abused by both of them still to this day they haven't stopped there bad destructive lifestyle i got adopted with my bio brothers by a nice woman and man that couldn't have kids and they saved my life i went through several therapy sessions through my life and the therapist were not confidential they would go and tell my adopted mother things i said about her in session which caused more fights at home it got so bad i completely stopped going so your videos are my therapy thank you for helping me
❤️❤️❤️ That this was your final video of Mystery Week! I have missed a couple of days, but I hope you do this again. I think you are pretty spot on with the meaning. This is why I love Billie. Her songs are great on their own, but when you see the visuals you get a deeper understanding of what you she is trying to convey. I will tell you that the ENTIRE audience sang along with her at the concert and it was beautiful!
Love this song and her voice. I kid you not, this clip has so much in common with Stromae's l'enfer, it amazed me. L'enfer ofcourse dealing with subjects as depression and suicidal thoughts.
Another perfect reaction to Billie.. You pick up on everything so blooming will and pick up stuff I didn't even pick up on.. I knew Billie Eilish would be a great artist for you to react to :D
You made so much sense of this song and you are helping so many people through these reactions realize more about themselves and their situation than you probably know. Thank you!
The first time I watched this video, I was sobbing. It totally caught me off guard. It is such a great video and your commentary was spot on. There is a “making of” this video that showed how the video was made.
For me, this song immediately made me think about my dad. “Don’t you know, I’m no good for ya” he used to say this a lot, because he struggled his entire life with many different types of addiction. “I’ve learned to lose, you can’t afford to” is a reference to losing his battle with addiction, and me losing him as a parent. I learned to live without him, but he couldn’t afford to lose because he would die. “Tore my shirt to stop you bleeding, but nothing ever stops you leaving” made me think of the many times I saved his life when he would OD. Or drink too much and begin to drown in his own vomit. No matter what I did, he would always choose to use again (leave). “Quiet when I’m coming home and I’m on my own” I always knew coming home from a sporting event or a night with friends, I would be spending it alone because he’d be passed out already. “I could lie, say I like it like that” reminds me of the face I always had to put on for people of the outside world. “Don’t you know too much already, I’ll only hurt you if you let me” is how I felt when he’d say I needed to leave and go be with my mother and brother. He would also gaslight me when I’d get upset, and say I knew how he was, so I knew I would be hurt. “Call me friend but keep me closer, I’ll call you when the parties over” he never wanted me to act like his friend or a support for him, but deep down I kept him alive for a long time and he knew that. He needed me. His party ended in 2014, I hope his soul has found peace. This song touched me on a very deep level, although for different reasons than most.
This is great art. To me the theme of this song/video is broader than just a toxic relationship. It's about addiction itself - to anything or anyone - and our struggle with/against it, and its power over us. Check out some of her other songs/videos such as Xanny (about drug use), Lovely (about feeling trapped), or idontwannabeyouanymore (about self image). She and her brother co-write their music (he's written a couple by himself) and he produces the songs. She directs a lot of the videos or they're based on her ideas. Anything off her her first EP Don't Smile at Me or LP When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go? is worth a listen, especially given her and Finneas' ages. The Happier Than Ever album is also good lyrically, but for me not as consistently compelling musically. She's also done a couple of covers that are excellent which showcase her voice and their combined talents: Bad (by Michael Jackson) and The End of the World by a lesser known artist.
These lyrics go SO much deeper than first heard. You have to listen to her songs several times before it sinks in. Watch her fans when she sings this live, it affects the entire audience. Notice the chains around her neck, the all white outfit…it all holds a meaning
I really liked your analysis of this song, got me very emotional. As a new Billie fan, I'm still learning the meanings in her songs, they are very deep. They really touch my soul deeply.
You have such a gift of insight. On the first viewing of this video you picked up on things I didn’t see after watching it dozens of times and made it so relatable.Thank you ❤️
Been here since "How could you leave us" and still get happy to see when you have posted. You're on a great mission in life, sir. I think you should react to Fire Away by Chris Stapleton with the music video.
Have a positive great week Tom. Thank you for the time you take on reactions for us to enjoy. I hope everyone that reads this has great week as well, if you're struggling at all please hold on and talk to someone, you are not your current situation and you ARE important!
First video I've seen from you, and I loved it. Thank you. Billie Eilish is a deep well, and I'm wondering if you'll do "idontwanttobeyouanymore" and "Hostage"?
I've watched so many of your videos now, and I just found your channel last night. Your analysis if the videos and lyrics are almost always spot on. Wonderful. I'm curious what you'd think of the song Hostage by Billie Eilish, I see almost no one ever react to it and it's one of my favorites, the lyrics, the video, all of it.
i originally came her just for the juice reactions but even if im not a fan of the artist i still find myself watching all your videos, keep up the good work! :))))
I really would like to see you react to a scarier Billie song, most notably Bury a Friend. It would be fun to see how you'd react and what you'd think about them
Ha, this is true ...although Tom has already reacted (brilliantly, I might add!) to three of the deepest, darkest songs about depression and toxic situations ... Billie always seems to find another level of "scary" LOL. I love her art so much and these reactions are top drawer. Thanks!
I think everything you said is true for the song but, at least for people who think like Billie, the part about calling them when the party's over means to have it hanging over your head while you're supposed to be having fun. The chorus is talking about that quiet part after you leave a social gathering and you have to gather yourself together and feel the emptiness of being alone again/missing that other person even though you know you shouldn't. The relationship is toxic and she wants to let go, but the moment she lets herself be alone again, all the loneliness and doubt creeps in again and that's where i feel the cycle begins and ends in the song
I think billie is brilliant 👏 she has such careful attention to detail exploring difficult topics I have much respect for her as an artist and person , I cry listening to her music 😢 💜
I saw this as a girl experienced in relationships with a guy who isn't. "I've learned to lose..." She feels destined to fail in the relationship, but he doesn't know that yet. His leaving, to her, is just a matter of time. "Call me friend, but keep me closer." or "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer." Telling him that she is not really his friend. Also shares the secret that he can only be hurt if he allows it, so if he feels pain, it's his fault, not hers, and his responsibility. Don't complain when the lion eats you; you knew what it was from the start. Better known as victim blaming. "I'll call you when the party's over." She'll let him know when the relationship is finished.
This song really helped me because the way i see it is that dark liquid represents sadness and depression and each glass of this liquid represents her keeping it quiet about it and at some point you start holding in too much and everything you have been holding for that time all comes out in one big wave. I used to hold in my demons and it didnt lead me in good places and when i heard this more and more i realized its unhealthy to keep it down and not talk about it.
The liquid she is drinking is actually activated charcoal (it's actually the very opposite of a toxin). They give it to you after an overdose to absorb the poison (often they'll give you a stomach pump first). It brings back some very old memories. The way this is filmed, the emotional tone, the 'hospital gown' clothing, all remind me of that. The overwhelming feeling afterwards is just failure and hopelessness. Interestingly the next video in the series, "bury a friend" has a psych-ward vibe. I don't think that's coincidental. It's an amazing video though so I would recommend it, much more up-tempo than this one.
My ex (who toyed with me for a year) hit me up again recently. I swear he has a sixth sense for exactly when to hit me up. We were just chatting about ordinary things for a few days and I said one day “I’m feeling self destructive. Tell me all the sweet things.” And he came back with so much encouragement and it was so wonderful. I told him that was lovely and it wasn’t what I was expecting. He asked what I was expecting. I said like seduction kind of sweet things. And he said “Ah I see, I am the destruction.” I said “Always.” He’s the only one who ever makes me feel better. But he also makes me feel so much worse. Going on 2 years of this.
if you ever want to discuss matters in relationships/toxic relationships, you should definitely react to taylor swift’s ‘all too well’ short film, which exhibits the highs and lows of one of her relationships in movie form. I’m not really a fan of her but that song struck a chord with me (especially in terms of lyricism) and I think the short video does a really good job demonstrating a one sided relationship with examples of gaslighting.
I would like to see your reactions to Justin Bieber “hold on” or “ghost” such a powerful songs. Still so many people hating on him, but his new projects are just awesome.
When two people are individually not in a good place to start a relationship, and risk inadvertently hurting the other person even thought they know it’s probable yet get involved anyway, THAT is what the song is about. When you know you are temporarily not equipped to take care of someone else’s heart yet somehow getting into a relationship anyway, because you fell in love and couldn’t help it. Sir, SHE is being very mature about it and is fully aware of what is happening. At 10:00 min into the video you started going into how when people find themselves in trouble that they shouldn’t trust their own judgement because their own thinking is what got them into such a mess - that they need help. Is that REALLY what she is saying and what this song is about?
I really recommend lonely by palaye royale, in my opinion their best song and deep lyrics. I also recommend neon gravestones by twenty one pilots, also one of tyler’s best lyrics and I think a message that is important to be heard
YESSS! Billie Eilish LETS GOOO. Great reaction. 999 everyone. Take Care. She was 16 in this video… my age lol. And I believe younger when her and finneas wrote it.
React to "listen before i go", "getting older" and "xanny" of hers. Those are great songs! "Lose you to love me" by selena gomez as well! I loved your reaction!
I just found you and love what you're doing. Have you ever reacted to a band called Icon for Hire? They're amazing. There's a song called Brittle, another called Hollow and quite a few more that are all centered around mental health and have brought me to tears with how much I relate to the lyrics. If you haven't already, please react to them

@@ReactionTherapyOfficial 🤣🤣🤣I always look forward to those, they weren’t too great a couple years ago but they’re supposed to get pretty crazy this year!😁
hey man please listen to fingers by lil peep the more u listen to his music he keeps hinting about death and it kinda goes unnoticed Fingers by lil peep And HONESTLY by lil peep
TOM GUESS WHAT i found a juice wrld song named you don't know me and in it he talks about and literally says codependent, the same think you've talked about before, it makes me wonder if he ever did go to therapy and they flake with him about it. i know you have a long list os songs to listen to but i think you'll like the lyrics and sounds of this one
So watching this video for quite some time looking at it going what the hell is it have to do in relation to the song after you broke it down with your video reaction it makes sense.
“Call me friend, but keep me closer”, always to me referred a bit to the saying “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer”. Like he tells her one thing about their relationship, but his actions says otherwise.
That's what I thought as well. It always made me think of that saying, almost as if she's saying that she's his 'enemy'
To me it says like, ‘Hey , cool, we’re friends, buddy! BUT please hopefully you think about me at 3am too.’ Call me friend but keep me closer ❤️
And I think “and I’ll call you when the party’s over.” means that she’s in a time of crisis and not really able to get in a relationship at the moment, but wants to.

I used to hold in my demons and it didnt lead me in good places and when i heard this more and more i realized its unhealthy to keep it down and not talk about it.
you should react to listen before i go.... it is the easily the most heavy song ive ever heared from her
i stay going back to billie eilish, her and juice seem to be the only people who truly relate. thx for the mental health awareness
You should check out this is home - cave town.. it has deep lyric
Put the request in the Google doc (link in the description) so we get it on the list…thanks so much! 😊👍
Tell me all the sweet things.”
And he came back with so much encouragement and it was so wonderful. I told him that was lovely and it wasn’t what I was expecting. He asked what I was expecting. I said like seduction kind of sweet things.
And he said “Ah I see, I am the destruction.” I said “Always.”
He’s the only one who ever makes me feel better.
This sounds fascinating! Thanks for the request!😊👍
You should react to let it all work out by lil wayne

Love it. PLEASE REACT TO EMINEM BONNIE AND CLYDE, eminem KIM, eminem 3 am, and eminem FRAMED!!!! llol
I really recommend lonely by palaye royale, in my opinion their best song and deep lyrics.
I also recommend neon gravestones by twenty one pilots, also one of tyler’s best lyrics and I think a message that is important to be heard
