  • It speaks for itself that the faster you drive, the higher your fuel consumption is. This effect is already immediately noticeable on relatively small speed differences, say 130 kmh instead of 120. But what if we could compare 130 km/h against 315 km/h ?
Enter Porsche Panamera Turbo S e-hybrid in the sexy SportTurismo pre-facelift shape. 680 horsepower and 315 km/h vmax. Back in 2019 I had the car for a week and decided to do something else than a regular test drive. I had an appointment for a video shoot with Audi in Ingolstadt, almost 500 kms from the Nürburgring. My goal? Drive as fast as I possibly can there, and sticking to 130 kmh advised speed limit on the way back and in the end compare the two runs.

    4:22 fuel tank is kept
under negative pressure so the fuel shelf life is higher in case you drive a lot in electric only mode. Thats why sometimes you have to wait until pressure equalizes and the fuel cap opens.

Amazed by how in 130km/h feels like you're stoped intl the midle of the road, as here in Brazil ir you drive this speed feels like you're speed of light comparing ta other cars

Maybe it isn't allowed but I regularly drive 200+ in the Netherlands. When you know where the police is, it's quite easy. Some simple highway basics and rules and you can speed whatever you like. Just don't do it on the ringroad of Rotterdam or Amsterdam. But the long stretches towards away from the Randstad area, some are even better to speed that the German autobahns. Because of better asphalt quality, better views in long corners (Germany has many times bad views in long curves on autobahns) and also in Netherlands are less long lasting roadworks. That is indeed the disatvantage of Germany. Roadworks take so long.

Very interesting! A few years back (2014) i did 634km through Austria and Germany with a 2010 E63 (the non turbo engine). 1/3rd of the distance was in germany and due to traffic 240kph was the max possible speed we reached there, while 130kph is the max allowed limit in Austria. And as a law abiding driver i kept to that. I did the whole distance on one fuel tank. (filled up before the start and at the end) and reached 11,12 L/100km. It was summer, the AC was running, we were 4 adults + luggage in the car and we stopped every 2 hours for a short break. (one of the adults was my 80+ year old Grandma) When looking at the numbers you reached with the Porsche, i am quite pleased with what the, at the time you recorded it, at least 9 years older 6.2 V8 without electric help, and without downsizing and coasting features is able to do. (i still have the car)

Well...when you can afford a 150k euro car, i'm pretty sure you don't care the gas bills. There are much more efficient cars with diesel engine that can have an average speed very similar to that Porsche. In 2010, i got a Cayenne S for 2 weeks. I kept it most of the time in the garage (20 l/100km). I prefer to have a 911 and a medium diesel car at my disposal.

High increase of fuel usage explained...please bear with me. We don't live in a vacuum. Air density is about 0.001225 g/cm cubed. The frontal area of a Porsche Panamera is 2.33 m squared. The drag coefficient of a Porsche Panamera is 0.30. At 300 km/h the drag force is 2,973 Newtons. While traveling at 130 km/h the drag force is only 558.3 Newtons. In fluid dynamics, whether it's air or water the drag increases exponentially as speed increases. This is why it takes three times the fuel to drive 300 km/h. Thanks for the video Misha, I enjoyed it.

This is a very interesting video Misha. It makes sense that the fuel efficiency does not decrease with the same proportion the speed increased which I will explain below if anyone is interested.
The first part is that the relationship between fuel efficiency and speed is non-linear mainly due to the non-linearity of the resistive forces with increased speed. These resistive forces in modern day vehicles are typically dominated by air resistance. The formula for air resistance at a given speed is Fd = 0.5*p*(v^2)*Cd*A. In this case (assuming the air density is largely the same between runs) "p", "Cd" and "A" are constant values and can therefore be excluded for this comparison. This means that the drag force (Fd) is directly proportional to the square of the velocity (v). If we put some numbers into this theory, we can show that the linear relationship between 102 km/h and 164 km/h is ~1.61 whereas the relationship of the squares is ~2.59. This means the engine is having to do 2.59 times instead of 1.61 times more work just to overcome the increase in air resistance. Why is this relationship of the squares (2.59) not the same as the relationship of the fuel consumption figures (3.37)?
Well, this leads to the second part, the ratios are not the same because combustion engines are designed to be more efficient at certain RPMs, usually cruising RPMs in the region of 2000 to 3500. I am not a chemical or powertrain engineer, so I cannot comment further on specifically how this works or why this range is chosen. However, what it means is that the RPM at 102 km/h is causing the engine to be relatively more efficient than at 164 km/h (made worse by the fact Misha was driving for some parts at 315 km/h with revs higher than 6000 RPM).

Very interesting and informative video. I have taken the liberty of converting your figures for the UK audience as we use the imperial gallon here. Your fast run using 152 litres, or 40.15 US gallons is 33.44 gallons here in the UK. That would equate to a 9.11 MPG. The second run using 45 litres, or 11.89 US gallons is 9.90 imperial gallons here, this would give us 30.5 MPG. The latter figure is very good indeed and makes more sense to anyone using imperial gallons.
    Sorry for being an anorak.
