First Time in Finland | 48 Hours in Helsinki

- We have arrived in Finland for the very first time and we are so excited to kick start our winter Christmas European getaway with 48 hours right here in Helsinki!
Day 1 of Jess epic European Christmas she has dreamt of as a kid begins with hot chocolates, roasting sausages by the fire in a red traditional hut.

Next up we needed to try a Finnish tradition - their Finnish spa experience of getting warmed up in a sauna and then jumping into icy cold water (don't ask me why they do it!)

We then attempted to find some Christmas markets (we were a tad early) so we resorted to some hot Glögi before calling it a night.
The next day we went to market square to try some warm creamy salmon soup, headed to Christmas street -

you should come a little norther than helsinki, so you wont miss the snow!
Yeah i wouldn’t recommend Hki for Christmas. Weather is usually shit. Go to Rovaniemi. (I live in hki)

Helsinki (in my opinion) is really city-ish so I don't like it that much, I'm not sure if it has that many forests lol
6:40 Finns like to put raisins and sliced almonds in their glögi drink. For foreigners it is easier to introduce that as a side snack :D

Finland has been my home for 10 years. And I must say to everyone, it is a must to see during Christmas because of the lights, the Christmas market, and all the traditions. It is expensive but if you are a foreigner and plan out your trip you can easily have a good time for a good price!!!!

I'm loving the Finland episodes. I had a short layover there just before COVID, and I took the train into the city center and walked around and had a coffee. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back for real. Your videos are giving me lovely ideas.

Tippaleipä, the pastry from the food market is actually normally eaten on first of may! I never knew you could even get it from somewhere at some other time of the year 😄

i think you're supposed to put the sultanas and nuts in the mulled wine!
yeah, in Finland traditionally we put sultans, nuts and almondslices (and vodka) in mulled wine but its not mandatory.

Yep, you can do that, but personally i prefer the mulled wine just as it is.
It¨s just like cream/milk & sugar . some want them in their coffee, some don't.
Sometimes I take the sultanas & almond flakes, sometimes I want glögi on its own. It's so rich in Christmas spices.
It's like hot spiced juice. Somebody called it mulled wine - don't know if that's the word - glögi doesn't have alcohol, but you can add a trickle of your favourite liquor there. Taste it first to know what fits, but the taste is not that far from spiced sweet, mild red wine.

Sauna - it's not screams of pain, it's adrenaline :)
If that is what you believe then you understood nothing.
Sauna is about cleaning your body, relaxation, sometimes meditation of sorts - and the cold water only exites tourists.
The natives dont get so exited about that, they just do it or they dont.
It is no rule at all, and no one gives a flying reindeerpoo whether someone else jumps into the water or not.
It does not gain you "street credits" and it will not compensate for a small dingdong.
Because no one cares about your ding dong either.
To exite a finn, you need to be the lead guitarrist of a rock band, or bring decent booze.

We have had our differences with our eastern neighbour when they tried to take my grandfathers appletrees,
but i believe after we educated them for hundrets of years they got the right idea about sauna / banya.
Btw folks, traditionally genders walk in separated - unless you are the same family. Its not a pick up / dating location where you should be going to stare at the other sex genitals.

As a Finn i can tell you that for me and many others it surely is adrenaline rushing through your body when you go from steaming hot sauna to a freezing cold sea/lake. That's why people do it, for the feelgood-hormones to kick in. Adrenaline is one of them.

I live in Helsinki and i can say that downtown looks good, but there is so much places in Helsinki that don't .Finland is not such a beautiful country as the videos suggest..

@@rstelford3532 I'm not a local, but have been there like 8 times since I'm from Finland. I'd recommend the Old Town (obviously) and the Seaplane Harbour
@@rstelford3532 All depends how long are you staying? For one day- definitely old town, seaplane harbour and telliskivi. But if you are more than one day then I would reccomend also to go to Viru raba (viru bog) and Jägala juga (Jägala waterfall).

While in Finland you guys should go to Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi north of Helsinki on the Arctic Circle. This will get you into the Christmas Spirit and you can even meet santa in his workshop.

Nice that you enjoyed Helsinki area. Definitely not the best weather to be a tourist here, must appreciate your persistence! The Cafe Regatta is truly a special place; it's small enough to get even us Finns to accept other people closer than at an arms length.

6:52 Those raisins (sultans you said) and almonds are for glögi. You put them IN your mug and spoon them to your mouth after you have finished the glögi.

Its funny looking at all the tourists facial expressions before jumping in to the sea, a lake or rolling in the snow after getting out the sauna. As a finn i can say that yeah its not a pleasant experience but the feeling after is just unbeatable. Thats atleast why i do it.
Aw cute. Their socks are the best. I just worked out that you arrived just days before my daughter and I did. As a first generation Aussie with Finnish parents, it was my first visit in the winter and have to say while so beautiful, I was a little saddened that there was no snow in Helsinki that week of Christmas. Funny to watch you drink Glögi where we sat only days later, and eat delicious salmon soup as we did. Fortunately we did make it to the big Christmas markets the day before spending a traditional Christmas Eve with family. Your vlog made me smile. Then, as you did, we headed north for a week of wonderful snow covered Lapland.

The raisins and the peeled almond are supposed to be mixed with your mulled wine. That is the way to drink it in Sweden. Finland is very special... Great video, safe and fun travels
