The Smugglers Barrel mix is a secret ingredient that not even the bartenders know. I guess you will just have to head on down to the Cove and try it for yourself. Tough! Located at 650 Gough St. in San Francisco.
    1oz Fresh Lime Juice
    1oz Pineapple Juice
    1.5 oz Smugglers Barrel Mix
    3 kinds of Demerara Rum

The rums used are El Dorado 3, Lemon Hart 151 and the El Dorado Smuggler's Cove Private Reserve. I read somewhere that Martin and Rebecca steep this rum in a number of spices. My guess is that the Barrel Mix is a variety on the Tropical Standard Grog Concentrate Syrup. Maybe with demerara suger ins stead of white sugar?

Wish I was able to make this and compare it to the other rum barrels. I really like Jeff beachbum Berry’s recipe which I find to be very balanced: 1 oz fresh lime juice
    1 oz white grapefruit juice
    1 oz orange juice
    1 oz soda water
    ¾ oz passion fruit syrup
    ¾ oz honey mix
    2 oz dark jamaican rum
2 oz gold virgin islands rum
1 dash Angostura bitters. For the rums, I found goslings black seal and smith and cross a good substitute. My rum availability is hit and miss here.

I've also been very curious about this recipe and have been trying to decrypt it but I ultimately gave up and just tried to make a rum barrel recipe I would love and here it is if you are interested.
      1 oz Light column rum
      1 oz Aged demerara rum
      1 oz Overproof demerara rum
      1 oz lime juice
      1 oz pineapple juice
      Secret barrel mix (amounts below)
      1/4oz pimento dram
      1/4oz SC demerara syrup
      1/4oz SC molasses syrup
      1/4oz SC cinnamon syrup
      1/4oz SC vanilla syrup
      1 dash ango
      Crushed ice shake and dump.
This recipe is bit heavier in texture and potency but I found it more to my liking.

Oh but you can! It will be delicious even if you use a regular simple syrup instead of the "secret" syrup. Also you can try to guess what the secret ingredient is. It's pretty dark so I'd think it's a molasses based spiced syrup, not unlike falernum or pimento dram.

This is smugglers coves only secret. Theyve shared over 100 recipes in their book and online, and they're super open if you ask when youre there. This is for us deep cut tiki lovers to see Cate make his signature secret and entice us to go try it

Just a guess, but I'd say the secret mix is 1-to-1 vanilla syrup and allspice liqueur

1.5 ounces of your guess would be completely overpowering the balance.

Or it could be a, Grog concentrate similar to Tropical Standards. Allspice berries, coca cola, and sugar.

This may not be one of the old time classic Tiki cocktails but it is more than worthy of being counted as one of the best. The layers of flavor all work well together to produce a uniquely flavorful experience. Martin's "secret sauce"is damn near impossible to replicate at home. I feel another trip to Smuggler's Cove coming on!
