I feel like most WoW players are still in this mindset of rushing to endgame as fast as possible because they have been conditioned by Blizz over the years that everything their game has to offer besides the latest expansion is irrelevant and a waste of time. So when they come into FF hot to hit the ground running, the game first off pulls the brakes and tells you "hold up, we do things differently around here" lol
Not me. I enjoy leveling. I am in no hurry to reach maximum level. I want the experience. I am a 13 year (former) World of Warcraft player.
Could you really ascribe wanting to do starting area quests and killing mobs at level 1 to a desire to rush to endgame? FFXIV earlygame story makes you meet a bunch of characters and gives you no incentive to care about them. It does pick up once you chew into it a bit, but just because Blizzard sucks now doesn’t mean we need to clown on people for wanting to play their MMO when they start it.
You need to realize that most of the MMO players wants to play end game content... Thats why wow was always top. Just because people play ff 14 right now, doesnt mean they want to do something different than end game content.. They want to do EXACTLY end game content. And which of top 5 has closest end game to Wow ? You are right FF14. Anyway i think biggest part in FF14 boom have streamers which hyped it. And it will slowly go back to normal player numbers soon
I was personally in no hurry to level, it's my favorite aspect of an MMO, but the FF starting experience is incredibly frustrating.
It's like 15-25 minutes of dialogue pages before you ever get a taste of the game
@@frophix3880 I doubt it. WoW's done for, despite Blizzard's mad scrambling to implement shit that should have been done at the alpha of BFA. As someone who came from WoW to FF14 years ago, once you get even a small taste of FF14 going back to WoW and all of its shit show is a really tall order. And when you discover that Square actually listens to player feedback for the most part... Warcraft has only stayed alive this long because a lot of its player base were simply too scared to try something new; Warcraft is the only MMO a lot of them knew. With Blizzard finally driving so many of its players to FF14, I imagine a lot of them are simply here to stay now.
Also "most MMO players wants to play endgame content" is a pretty false umbrella statement. Warcraft players were conditioned by Blizzard to only care about the endgame for that current expansion because that was the only thing worth doing. But in FF14, everything up to the endgame for that current expansion is valuable and isn't a complete waste of time. Even doing endgame content for A Realm Reborn has a purpose, and that content was endgame years ago now.

Yeah, if you're thinking of trying FF14, just be aware that almost every aspect of the game revolves around the story. So if cutscenes and reading aren't your thing, FF14 might not be your thing either. Because story is 90% of the game. It's an rpg first and an mmo second.
Yeah, I couldn't get into it myself. Cutscenes/story are fine with me, I loved the MGS series for example, or even written stories that _require_ reading like Morrowind. I just found the FF14 story to be pretty dull and generic, at least for the first 40 levels or so. I kept getting promised 'it gets better' and it just never delivered for me, unfortunately.
@@Shmandalf I totally get how you would feel that way. A Realm Reborn is very slow, with a lot of repitition and world-building in the story. The voice acting is mediocre and most everyone is bored by it. But what you heard is right. It gets better later on. Starting with patch 2.4 (well into level 50 content), the quality of the story drastically improves and becomes fantastic. Starting with Heavensward, they get a new crew for the VA and that becomes great as well. For the rest of the game, all of that boring stuff in a Realm Reborn will slowly come back in a way that pays off and makes all of it worth it. Also, I did enjoy the absurdness that was the manderville questline.
I've played wow for 16+ years and only recently stopped because you can only do so many 15-20+ keystones each expansion until you finally get bored because they stopped innovating a long time ago and everything they release is to reset your character and keep you grinding like a second job.
I enjoy many of the aspects of 14 thus far. Even if I hadn't played wow all those years I probably would've skipped those scenes all the same as im just not a big story person. I feel like there is such a thing as too much detail and arr kinda set the tone for me to skip stuff as I viewed Plenty of what I did watch irrelevant to what I was doing when I tried it years ago before they rebuilt it.
Won't say that any of the stories outside of ShB is bad, only that it wasn't for me. I can share the blame with wow a bit here too as their story hasn't made a bit of god damn sense in a very long time and they're a big reason for my lack of caring for what little story I do watch.
I feel like they ruined story telling for me and I have to be in a pretty good mood to even entertain story telling.
Only thing I wish ff14 had from wow is their transmog system. I understand how to use the glam dresser and it's not an issue, only that it simply could be better and I need more glam slots as I already capped the 400 in a month and a half.
I will say ff14 does respect your time compared to wow. It's extremely refreshing to not feel punished because you decided to take a night off.
There is so many things wow should take from ff14, but the biggest thing is what I said above. Ff14 makes content that respects your time whereas wow makes content that simply punishes you if you don't commit the time. Two wildly different styles of playing and I'm very happy that Yoshi and his teams hard work is finally getting massive returns. The difference between such a humble leader in ff14 compared to a smug thinks they know it all game director at wow explains the vastly different design styles.

What's the point of making an MMO if you fill it with content designed for a singleplayer RPG?
@@Blitzkrieg1605 What a bizarre and leading questions with no real purpose. An MMO isn't defined as what you personally want it to be.

I tried Elder Scrolls Online. It was so unbelievably boring. So much story I couldn't care less about. Easily the worst MMO I ever played in my life, if it can even be called an MMO.
I ask again. Elaborate. What is the point of creating single player content in an MMO? Why not make a singleplayer game out of this content?
@@Blitzkrieg1605 You seem to be under the misconception that FFXIV having content suited to a single-player game means that there is no content designed around multiplayer. That couldn't be farther from the truth.
On the contrary, these days, the WoW leveling experience is far, far lonelier than anything in FFXIV, except instead of an entertaining story to keep you interested, it's just walls of text and killing shit. FFXIV is friendly to solo players, but it is not exclusively tailored to them. You still need to do group content to proceed to the end-game, which is, you guessed it, lots of group content.

Let's be honest here, this is perfectly accurate. I purposefully found the controls that show/hide player names EXPRESSLY to clear out the name flood. It was horrific.
This isn't accurate in the slightest. It's way too clean, there should also be separate nameplates for each of those player's pets.
I started playing this recently. Good fun, now i'm a 2ft tall badass with a pompadour that defends the squishy mages.
Evil little critters. Don't let Tataru or Nanamo fool you. These are hobbits with the soul of Sauron. Their schemes are many, they are ancient, and they are patient. Not unlike the mice from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
This is so accurate. I love FFXIV to death, but even I know that its definition of 'new player friendly' is not the same as 'longtime-gamer-but-only-just-started-FFXIV friendly'.
That's why I always tell people to treat it as a Final Fantasy game first, an MMO second.

Yup, the thing about FFXIV is that it assumes it's your first MMO in terms of the early start (which makes sense since it's part of a single-player RPG series), but gosh can it make the transition wonky for MMO vets coming in.
That being said it's worked perfectly for me because a bunch of my friends that I've gotten into it ended up with it actually being their first MMO, and a few of them their first video game at all. So in THAT regard the restrictive opening ended up surprisingly super helpful. 😂
The informative overload and active help windows have just always been super overwhelming when you first start out, and I wish it was better integrated into the gameplay a little bit. Navigating windows is very Japanese game design
Silly how long this has plagued the industry, only thing it really needs is a window asking "is this your first time playing a ?" Then skip the typical stuff and jump to anything unique for this game...
I guess it will be a really short tutorial in most FPS games?
The only thing I struggled with, having never played an MMO, but not being a stranger to videogames has been the enemy AoE snapshot, but only because it makes absolutely no visual sense, and comes directly from tech limitation of sorts.
It's the most videogamey aspect of the game, and can really take you out of the experience when you first discover how it works.
Though I did pick up on it quick enough, and has become second nature to, if there were ever the option for FF14 combat to NOT behave that way I would welcome it 100%.
Also, MMOs seem to like their slow af starts (from what I've seen), and I never could figure out why early dungeons have to be boring as they are. Sure it gets better later on, but that's WAAAY later on. It's not like players would be overwhelmed if given the core kit upfront (main combo chains, most role OGCDs).
Honestly I sort of wished the game held hands longer(but less intense at the start) given so many players stand around at 60+ still not knowing many basic QoL-utilities or even base rotations. I don't mind explaining stuff to people when asked, but I feel a bit sorry for those who never ask/had anyone to ask. Because some features are just such immense improvements to the player experience, but are never properly explained by the game.
@@romdog1818 the aoe snapshot thing is a means of countering latency. Everything is done client side first, and syncs up on "ticks". Since the game only cares where your character is the very second an enemy cast finishes, you can run that raid at 200+ ping and still be fine

5 seconds on the character creator and skipping the first cutscene?
Am I the minority? Is this common? Spent nearly an hour on the creator and never skipped a cutscene that I haven't already seen since the first time I started playing (about 2 years ago)
Of course not. Its meant to be a joke.
I don’t think it’s common, but maybe the cutscene thing at least is more common among WoW refugees as they’re used to a game with less story focus and a more gogogo community mentality.
Well, next series character probably realises the green buttons she flicked off are info that is supposed to make your life easier %)

-character customisation: random/default

-play around 10 hours

-realize that you've ruined the character and half of quests and don't understand what's going on
-create new character, don't skip anything
-"ah sh1t, here we go again"
When I first started playing I was trying to catch up to a friend who was already in Heavensward, so I skipped all of ARRs cutscenes before realizing that there's actually a plot going on.

skipping the story is okay for people who dont REALY care about the story and just go for the gameplay. BUT people should also remember that skipping the story for the first time and doing new game plus for the story is a different experience from taking the story seriously from the first time, there's a lot of reveals, surprises and deaths that means alot the first time you see it. And a lot of people regret skipping the story at first because they liked the story on the expansions. So if you're a person that knows him/herself that you think that you will regret it, DONT SKIP THE STORY.
Ngl ppl can semi skim ARR story since some parts (talking sprites, wine collecting, tataru, etc…) is eh. Once ppl reach heavenward story then yeah bit more attention to the story.
Plus ppl can always recheck quest logs and rewatch cutscene in their inn room if one day refresh on what went down if skim or forgot.
Legit ARR quest was peak “okay other mmos got fetching, go back and fourth mechanics to stretch our story so we should do that.” Then by heavens “okay so a lot of ppl hated those mechanics WoW and similar do. Let’s tone that down and keep things in one tts i with minimal back tracking okay?”
Took me avg 250 hours to reach heavenward story. Mainly about 100 of that was procrastinating, lvl up cooking and lancer and chasing down triple triad cards.,
I don't play MMOs for story. I couldn't care less about the story in an MMO. That's what singleplayer RPGs are for. I tried playing Elder Scrolls Online in a free week. Oh my. OH MY. I would have regretted so hard if I would have actually paid for that. It was basically running from NPC to NPC and getting experience. Tried a dungeon. Complete face roll in 5 man. Even managed to do another dungeon with just 2 people when I was underleveled. This video applies so well to ESO as well.
That's why my most played MMOs to this day remain WOW, Guild Wars 2 (light story compared to ESO and FF14) and Rune Scape (the old one back in the day). I will NEVER understand the allure of a story focused MMO. What's even the point of the MMO features? I sure hope GW 2 won't follow this trend in the new expansion.
Nah, skipping most of ARR is totally fine, even for people who care about story. I would even encourage it because ARR'd beggining is boring and filled with non-important busy work.
personally love a good storyline but i have found myself skipping it a lot in most mmo's ffxiv is a different the storyline is so good!
If you want to skip, skip. Some don't care about the story, they came for the gameplay and FF doesn't gate them from it ( in the sense that if they skip cs and dialogue it won't punish them )
Just take it slow and enjoy it, recommend not skipping cutscenes. The context is really nice and makes even the most lame task seem more important. You'll appreciate the investment later on.
Ain't nobody got time for that.
@Fusajiro 30% of the players couldn't care less about the text in the quests. They just want to kill stuff and get strong.

Same, I only got to talk to Mionne before I had enough with cutscenes, it was only years later when I had enough of WoW that I went back with a different view and now I'm not looking back
Shoot, this was me trying to join GTAV online.
So many blips! So many text boxes! And they just kept coming up! I thought it’d be like tutorial boxes where they get tucked away after popping up once, but no, they kept coming back!
I guess you tried to read a novel like you would a news paper cartoon.
WoW really negatively impacted player expectations for other games.
@@BlueShellshock Well after the beginning of the game they are much less common as you would have done almost everything already. That is when some actually want them to come back when they run into the reason why the tutorial existed in such an annoying way. When you compare them FFXIV is better as it is being updated with longer story content per expansion pack than WoW is. Also the story character of Y'shtola is cool and made in such a way to make her attractive. To this what race she is you also can be which is good as you don't always have that in all MMORPGs. Just in FFXIV you have around 6 or 8 races with 2 sides to each thankfully you can be either gender for all of them. So if you want to be human you can be human, an elf girl with big boos long ears that too a bunny guy with small ears and fluffy tail that too. That thing i choose was a elf furry thingy which i have heard is describe more so as a cat boy than an elf. The amount of customization you can put into it can take you hours if you really get into it or no time at all if you go with the presets.
... oh yeah to those who will probably comment about race being effectively species that is normally in Final Fantasy. You also have the choose of skin color so whatever color you want you can have as long as it is a normal skin hot pink people running around.
Still, I wouldn't be surprised if this video was made because Blizzard asked Carbot (with monetary compensation or not) to take a jab to FFXIV. I mean, they're their main competitors in the MMO department, right?
I don’t know why but I feel personally attacked by the character creation skip.
I try to not get triggered and think, what would Yoshi P our lord and savior would say. And he would say Dave, the boost and skip chapters they buy will go directly to the oceana data center and servers.
@@davidsabillon5182 Great way of looking at it, bud. :D Also to more voice acting for future expansions. Rock on, content-skippers.
This feels so weird to watch, not only from a WoW players perspective but someone who played since Feb 2020 on ff14. I love the story and would pay attention to every non-voiced line, even in WoW I read the quest text, yes I'm MAD.
I can't imagine how Wow players that dont care about story will feel going into ff14 and then get...this, It's great. Amazing animation, although I judge you severely for not starting out In the GREAT AND GLORIOUS LIMSA LOMINSA!
Wow had a good narrative until Cata came out. Legion was also good. From the story perspective MOP, BFA and WoD too. Cata was bad, Shadowfuck is extremely shitty. SL is like the new Star Wars Movies "Lets copy things from our own franchise"
I strongly and VERY strongly disagree with you. I tried FF14 many many years ago and I left the game before I even hit the 50 because of its horrible and long main story. Had many friends telling me good part starts after that but geez it was seriously uninteresting and repetitive, sending me back and forth just to only watch some non-voiced line. Hell devs now let you skip that story quests with money! Even they know that people want to skip it and they charge you for it!.
@@Lynkeus01 FYI, the skip potions are available because players asked for it, and it was a pretty long time ago. It is for changing data centers, not skipping the story for the sake of skipping.
No one will recommend new players to use it. Also, they knew about the post ARR quests and cut it down quite a bit in recent updates.
Also, if you are willing to try it again, read all of those repititive and uninteresting dialogues. They are things that will be used and mentioned again later in the story and future expansions.

This is technically why people said you should boost if you're not big on any video game's story. But here's what you should do after you decide to boost and go straight to the raids: *Do HARD MODE difficulties FIRST, BEFORE doing Extreme to Savage difficulties.*
There are mechanics that are carried over from the lower difficulties from the raids and yes, while Savage difficulties will have a couple of completely new attacks and dangers to watch out for, there are still some things that you still need to worry about that are still there in the lower difficulties. Basically there are times you need to *let the Tank and Healer use their Limit Breaks at the RIGHT TIME or you will all die (because you share the Limit Break Meter with EVERYONE in the raid or your own 8-man party of a 24-man raid),* there are quick time events mid battle where if you don't follow the instructions in time you will die and in some battles one of you failing causes a total wipe, and special moments in battle like being blown up in the air and you and your allies can do nothing but dodge attacks in the air while you're falling back down.
There are various crazy things that happen in some raid battles that you need to know by the time you do Savage Difficulties that is *more than just dodging attacks.* Once again, *do the lower difficulties first (even at least once) before doing the highest difficulties.* Because if you've played games where people get mad at you for not knowing certain things when you do higher level content or you're the one that gets mad at these kinds of players, do you honestly believe that Final Fantasy XIV will be any different?

A WoW player being blindsided that FFXIV actually has story it cares about and a ton of tutorials.
I've played WoW for years, they have story too, but unfortunately they didn't make a smooth way to make community care about, cinematics is ALWAYS a good way to make that
XIV's biggest strength is also its biggest weakness:
The meticulously crafted narrative.
TBH I do to enjoy that Carbot shares the same affinity for caricaturesque criticism no matter the Title :)
Ah, another Spiffing Brit fan, have a nice day and a cup of tea, Sir! 🍵

I was also like this, until I realized this game doesn’t force you to rush to late game or else you are getting behind.
It feels good to have time for yourself and explore whatever you feel like exploring.
Except if I wanna raid I have to rush through the most boring questline I’ve ever experienced in a game. Basically pigeon simulator.
I'm not gonna lie, but I never felt that the game forced me to get to max level, unless I wanted it to be at max level.
The only problem is that wow has not a permanent and good sync down system for old content, but you can still try it, is just that there's no people doing it on big numbers

Y'all gotta remember it's a final fantasy game first an MMO second . So coming from other MMOs where you have all this freedom to explore the world and do whatever the hell you want that doesn't really exsist much in FFXIV. All final fantasy games are pretty similar in that notion where it is very linear movement with tons of story and cutscenes
@ERA CASTE oh no for sure I'm right there with you in just saying compared to other games FF normally is linear in it's traversal . So people gotta remember even the director says it it's an FF game first and foremost then an MMO .

Why do WoW players complain about text? WoW quest givers literally make you read a novel if you want to know what's going on.
Not really, at least not in starter areas
Because WoW players have learned over time that they can just hit the quest accept button, and the NPCs will give a basic idea of what's going on if they need to know. 14 doesn't do that. Read, or die.
@@BeyondDaX usually it's a big ass wall of text.

funny one, btw personally i LOVE games with clear and huge tutorials, rater than Vanilla WoW where u had no clue bout anything xD
I have this vague suspicion, that people who skip all these tutorials, always end up regretting it somehow......
They definitely do ahah
They do. And then they call the game bad, because they skipped.
It's actually really funny, and they're also increidbly easy to spot.
As someone who didn't play WOW before FF14.. I'll never understand the mentality of skipping every cutscene/story part because you want to reach "endgame" as quick as possible.😅 We have two new wow refugees in our FC and they kinda screwed themselves with this and regret it now.
It's just that WoW narrative isn't done inside endless cutscenes that demand your attention. They are events that happen in-game, for the most of the game, such as NPCs talking and development inside the quests with speech bubbles and quest texts. But while that is happening, you have complete freedom to walk around or even leave if you want. So, even while you're going over the leveling process and actually want to experience the story, you can pretty much skip a lot, and you're not really punished by skipping a lot.
Think of Bozja fates and how they tell a story since one fate continues out of the other, it's basically how WoW tells their story through most of the game. Cutscenes usually are greeted with: "Ooh! Cutscene!".
It's simply how people got trained, not only by WoW, but the Majority of MMORPG's over the last 25 Years. Leveling is the chore, only the endgame counts.
It’s from leveling alts. You’ve seen all the cutscenes a million times. It gets to be a habit. But I’ve never skip a cut scene I haven’t seen at least twice
