  • Pt. 2: What the NEW Testament teaches about HOMOSEXUALITY.
    This 4 part series will address:
    Understanding, very clearly, what the Bible teaches about homosexuality.
    Understanding the new pro-gay theology which has recently become the fuel of the modern "gay reformers" movement.
    Understanding how the pro-gay movement is wrong about the Bible and being able to help others understand it.
    Having a thorough secular case against homosexuality (for those conversations with non-Christians).
    Answering the pro-gay slogans like "love is love" "two people should be able to do what they want in their own bedroom" "as long as it's two consenting adults" "equal marriage rights" "your bigotry is why so many gays commit suicide" etc.
    Looking at the legal case against same-sex marriage.
    Dealing with the anger of pro-gay friends and family.
    How to truly love gay friends and family in a Christ-like way.
    Teacher: Mike Winger
    Occasion: From the Sunday evening service at Hosanna Christian Fellowship in Bellflower CA

    The thing about the arguement of "following our nature" is, when has Christianity EVER taught us to follow our nature? Our nature is sin. We are never encouraged to follow our nature, but to die to our nature and follow Christ.

    I've struggled a lot with this. I've been viciously attacked by the autistic community (I'm an autistic advocate) over this. I began to wonder if I was wrong and clinging to misunderstandings - mostly because I sincerely love so many people who identify themselves proudly as LGBTQ+. I've noticed the narrative morph over time. I appreciate you going into this because I am not a scholar in this area by any stretch of the imagination and I was wondering if there was error. I've gone through a lot of popular culture brainwashing, I feel like. I find it frustrating that everyone has an answer for everything in that its like an excuse for why someone might give testimony about turning from this and to God (like, well they must just be bi then). Yet I'm hearing how sexuality is fluid and it changes - the first way to sell it was that it was unchangeable and God was cruel for punishing people for something they couldn't control. Now we see by data and by the movement itself, few people are still holding the idea that its unchangeable, but that they love who they love so that's just how they're gonna be and feel. I know it's hard for people. I don't feel strongly about sexual things, probably less than the average person, so I can't relate to what it is to make my whole identity about that. I don't get why it's so hard but I know that for many it genuinely is. Regardless, following this video, I can see I've been lied to repeatedly by people, whether intentionally or not. And I really, really don't like being lied to. I was feeling really hurt because I never meant to hurt anyone and they kept trampling on me - but they're lost in a world of lies and are demanding I go along with it. I don't hate them. They make false equivalence between autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder, and sexuality, and tell me I'm a hypocrite for not encouraging people to be who they want sexually. But it's a lie. And it's not easy, and I don't expect people who don't follow Christ to want to follow the Word. But that doesn't mean I'm a bad person for taking the Word seriously, and God isn't being mean or cruel. In fact, I've seen many times the dark, twisted cruelty and confusion that seeps into every area that is all about being pro LGBTQ+. I hurt for my loved ones. I hurt for my community. But I am thankful to hear the Word of God shared truthfully and in honest love. It gives me peace when confusion is thrown my way.

      By the way I’m just like you. That’s why I was excited when this popped up. I’m very careful about who I listen to and unless I’m in the Holy Spirit, like I can feel he’s here with me without a doubt, I often don’t listen to other people because on my walk with Christ I’ve fallen into so many invisible pot holes of mistruth. But Jesus pulls me out every time. I also don’t struggle with sexual sin as much as other people and don’t know any people in this lgbt community so this was always an issue I wondered about. I never really had a full answer I guess when someone asked me. I always just say God loves everyone and to come as they are. But in my thought life, is it ok to read wholesome gay fiction or watch wholesome gay movies? I didn’t know. I read my Bible but the first part of this showed me I’ve been doing it wrong. I forgot to go slow and really use my brain when I’m stumped on an issue. And since there’s just so few mentions I thought, well maybe it’s a mystery. God said, read your Bible. I said, ok...but aren’t we on three times in a row now? Lol.

      Thanks so much for sharing, Stephanie. As a Christian on the autism spectrum, I know exactly what you're talking about. Kudos to pointing out the false equivalency between autism and sexuality, which is similar to the false equivalency between race and sexuality that's pretty prevalent. Here's my understanding of it: I have no control over my ethnicity, my race, or my "disability". Race and autism are 100% nature, whereas sexuality is a messy, muddled combination of nature and nurture. When it comes to sexuality, your experiences, upbringing, and personal values clash with nebulous feelings and inclinations that can change pretty much on a whim. The autistic and LGBT communities do have commonalities, mainly with respect to how often they've been marginalized, alienated, or mistreated, but that's honestly where the similarities end.

      I havent had a conversation on it with people yet but I am kinda dreading that and I'm also not happy about the weird amalgamation and political pressure of the alphabet squad using unrelated things to push their ideals (I have autism and those are linked for whatever reason, they use an idiotic treatment for gender dysphoria created by a maniacal child abuser who was probably a nonce who also caused two lads to kill themselves, they use people with genetic disorders, they use fat people) it's stupid, they dont belong together. Like turn the other cheek....did you know there was a Roman law at the time that in order for a man to be charged with assault there must be marks on both of his cheeks? Puts that verse into a new perspective if you sit and ruminate on it. Is it about just turning the other cheek and taking the slap, not fighting back? Or is it about standing there and allowing the attacker to attack you just enough so you can hold him accountable by the law of the land?

I always come back to....what does the world have to do with you? We are not of this world any longer. Our eyes are fixed above on Him and as long as we still walk this dirt the only thing that matters is what Jesus wants us to do while we are still here. That’s it. By keeping this thought at the front of my brain I’ve missed many pot holes of mistruth that would have spun me around and twisted my mind. Now, I’ve also fallen into those pot holes. Our heart is the new Holy of Holies. When Jesus died, the curtain leading to the Holy of Holies tore in half. God now resides in our hearts by faith rather than in a Holy room in the Temple. He cleaned house and moved in. Why do we still sin, then? Because while our hearts are pure, our minds are not. That’s why Paul talks about the renewal of the mind in Romans 12:2.

    Another question: "If gay people are naturally created, born, etc this way and heterosexuality is NOT natural form them, then how come, if a gay person has sex with a person of the opposite sex, they will produce offspring? Shouldn't a naturally gay person be UNABLE to, heterosexuality speaking, procreate with a person of the opposite sex?"

    • @ashwardley
      @ashwardley Год назад

      @@nostalkingzone Misrepresentations of his opponents’ views:
      - 02:30 - Mike’s reading of Romans 1 is not rejected “primarily” on the basis of it meaning gay people would be forced to be alone forever. He’s missed out the context they lay down for who Paul was talking to, the culture of the time, what we know of God’s character throughout scripture etc. He’s jumped from exegesis to application and missed loads of steps to make it sound non-sensical or silly.
      - 03:52 - I’ve seen various interpretations of what the creation accounts in Genesis 1 and 2 mean when referring to “it’s not good that man should be alone”. It could refer to being the only human but it could specifically refer to a one flesh bond needed to reflect a particular kind of love. Using New Testament passages on praising the value of singleness doesn’t mean sexual love within marriage don’t have an important place within creation and you can’t then read back into Genesis 1 and definitively say it only refers to being the only human.
      - 04:20 - he misrepresents the argument by making a flawed comparison with single people who have always had the option to marry if they desire. Even if they desire it but don’t end up getting married, it’s a very different mindset than FORCING someone to stay single. Paul never does this. He recommends singleness for the sake of the kingdom but makes it extremely clear it is his preference, not a command.
      - This is what makes me most uncomfortable about the non-affirming view (both sides have their strengths and weaknesses). The church on the whole now accepts the existence of a minority of people who are born with same sex attractions and has to balance it with scripture where traditionally they shouldn’t be encouraged so they ended up with the conclusion of putting a sticking plaster on it by forcing them to stay single which I don’t find anywhere in scripture as a commandment for a whole section of society.

    • @ashwardley
      @ashwardley Год назад

      @@nostalkingzone …
      - 16:40 - if as he’s just stated the argument goes that the number of long term, committed, same sex couples in the ancient world are few or even none, and Paul is condemning all same-sex acts that he is aware of, then he’s not condemning the type of relationship above. Of course, he’s not necessarily sanctioning it either. He just doesn’t have them in his head when writing to the Romans because that’s not the type of relationship that’s common at all. Mike makes a leap here that isn’t really backed up.
      - “If Paul wanted us to think there was an exception to the rule, he didn’t give us any wiggle room to find that in the passage”. Mike has used “us” here which I find odd. Paul isn’t writing to us. The book is to 1st century Romans who didn’t have this issue as a burning question in their society. Why would Paul write the verse Mike is demanding to make the exceptions explicit? They did have all kinds of pederasty, rape of male slaves, temple prostitution etc going on that is on the agenda though. This is a strange way to read your Bible. It’s definitely given by God and FOR us, but the epistles are not TO us unless the Holy Spirit personally uses scripture we read and applies it to the believer now.

    While I agree in general principle with you, I think your response to the loneliness argument was not solid. You countered that singleness for the kingdom is elevated in the New Testament and therefore gay singleness is not unfair. But you leave out that marriage is a provision in I Cor 7 for those Christians (the overwhelming majority of us) who do not have a level of self-control to be celibate. So wouldn't it be unfair to expect ALL gay Christians to exhibit that level of self-control forever, when only a fraction of straight Christians are expected to?

    • @LetTalesBeTold
      @LetTalesBeTold 5 месяцев назад

      I understand your point on this; however, I don’t think we can really assert that all gay Christians will forever struggle with their attractions and, more specifically, their loneliness from not being in a marriage. I am not necessarily one to speak to the issue (I have struggled with the relational side of SSA but not the actual ‘physical acts’ side), but I can say that the more I spend time devoting myself to Christ rather than dwelling on relational loneliness, the less certain temptations define me and the less loneliness I feel. 1 Cor. 10:13 says “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” I believe that applies to the aftermath as well, be it loneliness or some other emotion. God is our Comforter, after all.
      Now, does that mean I think all gay Christians will find themselves at peace with celibacy til God calls them home? No, I can’t make that claim either. But if God allows us to struggle in our emotions for long periods of time, when it’s connected to trying to live a holy life, it’s not unfairness nor neglect that keeps us in those emotions- it’s the mystery of God’s providence that is there for His purpose, which we may not know, but we can assume at least exists so that we know Him more and can better appreciate His sustaining us through the trials of life. If God asks us to deny some part of ourselves for Him, the blessing will definitely be greater than the burden in the end. ❤️

    I disagree with your reading of 'it is better to marry than to burn'. Mike, you give it a very minimal interpretation - if you fall in love with someone of the opposite sex, go ahead and marry. To me, it seems a bit unnecessary for the Bible to say that - I know of no one who had the chance of marriage who rejected that in favour of a celibate life, missing out on companionship and intimacy. I believe it is teaching that if you cannot control your lusts it is better to discipline them in marriage than trying to deal with them when you are single and lonely and frustrated. Marriage does not cure lust but it certainly is presented here as offering a help in dealing with them. If I am lusting badly and I find it difficult to pray as all my prayers on sexuality have been rejected over decades, what do I do to cope with the torment? Any ideas? .

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  8 лет назад +9

      +David Kennedy I tried to answer that question to some extent in the next video in the series. I think that it ultimately comes down to walking in self-control and denying self. Marriage may help in a sense but married people must still fight that battle of lust. I don't think that God typically answers the prayer "take these desires away" until we stand before Christ in glorified bodies. I do think that feeding those desires causes them to grow (whoever commits sin is a slave of sin) as Ephesians also says when it tells us to put off the old man which grows corrupt according to deceitful lusts. James also says "blessed is the man who endures temptation".

    • @MikeWinger

      I feel your pain David, or at least I think I do. My own struggle with sin has me longing desperately for heaven. I don't exaggerate when I say that I feel deeply my own depravity and though I have generally stopped praying for God to take away those desires it is not without hope. I look forward to the day that I will be in His likeness and will not only "not sin" but will no longer have any desire to do so. In the mean time am told that if I "walk in the Spirit" I will not "fulfill the lusts of the flesh" and that I should "mortify the flesh" and "reckon the old man dead" and "put off the old man" and on and on with the truth that sets my course on obedience in faith in spite of an internal, carnal draw toward sin.

He has not supported me in the ways I had hoped for. Twenty five or thirty years ago I wish I had prayed for asexuality but I did not know that word then. I would still have had the loneliness and the tedium of celibacy and I would still have had a struggle but I would not have had the torment of unfulfilled sexual desire on top of all that, nor would I have the fear of just packing all this in for the warmth and companionship of a homosexual relationship, thereby losing the Kingdom as described in 1 Corinthians 6. It's glaringly hypocritical and blatantly selective for Christians who claim to adhere strictly to the teachings of Christ to preach vehemently against same-sex love, often labeled as homosexuality, while simultaneously turning a blind eye to divorce, which is truly condemned in the Bible. This selective enforcement of biblical teachings reveals a deep inconsistency that undermines the credibility of those professing to uphold scriptural authority.
    Selective Enforcement:
    Hypocrisy in Focus: Many churches emphasize biblical condemnations of homosexuality (e.g., Leviticus 18:22, Romans 1:26-27) while neglecting equally clear condemnations of divorce (e.g., Matthew 19:9, Malachi 2:16). This selective focus on certain sins over others exposes a biased interpretation of scripture.
    Cultural Bias: The disproportionate condemnation of homosexuality over divorce reflects cultural prejudices rather than a balanced reading of the Bible. This selective morality demonstrates a tendency to cherry-pick verses that support existing biases while ignoring those requiring more challenging self-reflection and change within the church community.
    Biblical Consistency:
    Matthew 19:9: "And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery." This verse explicitly condemns divorce and remarriage as adultery, yet many churches allow divorced members to remarry without the same level of scrutiny applied to same-sex relationships.
    Malachi 2:16: "For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away..." God’s strong disapproval of divorce is clear, yet this teaching is often downplayed in favor of more socially acceptable norms.
    Practical Implications:
    Prevalence of Divorce: With high divorce rates among Christians, many churches have adapted by being more lenient on divorce to retain congregants. This leniency starkly contrasts with the harsh stance often taken against homosexuality, highlighting a double standard.
    Pastoral Care vs. Doctrine: Churches frequently prioritize pastoral care and inclusivity for divorced individuals, offering support and forgiveness. This compassionate approach is not equally extended to those in same-sex relationships, despite both being addressed in the Bible.
    By highlighting these inconsistencies in how biblical teachings are applied, it's clear that the selective condemnation of homosexuality while ignoring biblical prohibitions against divorce reveals a profound hypocrisy within many Christian communities. This inconsistency calls into question the integrity of using scripture as a moral absolute when its application is so evidently biased.

    I have always seen Romans 1:18ff as being about idolatry and ignoring God leading to all kinds of sins. The passage is in the plural - it refers to 'they' and so we cannot read it in the sense of an individual moving from idolatry to hating God then on to homosexual conduct then working through the sins listed in the rest of the chapter.in the order they are listed. After all I have been totally homosexual in desires since 14 or 15 and I was in homosexual relationships for many years. But many of the sins listed here simply do not apply to me and they never did. I am not vicious, not full of murder, not malignant, not insolent, not disobedient to parents, not a breaker of my word, not without affection, not pitiless. It is wrong to assume all these sins are to be found in a single person. But to me it is clear that this condemns all homosexual behaviour (British spelling!).There is a wrong way to interpret Romans 1. Pastor Steven Anderson a Baptist minister says that God punishes a person who has already rejected Him by turning him over to a reprobate mind and letting the person free to wallow in his sins. There is no hope for such a person and for the Pastor this appears to happen at the point when God gave the person homosexual desires, the deviance of which Pastor Anderson stresses. in other words, God gave me up at 14 or 15. There is no point in preaching the gospel to such a person and he or she cannot understand the Bible as he or she has a reprobate mind. Anderson is nothing if not consistent - he tells his church not to evangelise any homosexuals they meet when out and knocking doors. Anderson also thinks we should have a theocracy and the State should execute homosexual men and lesbians i.e. he would go beyond even Leviticus. I am sure this way of seeing Romans 1 is false and horrible theology but any time I challenge it Anderson supporters just tell me that I don't understand the Bible as I have a reprobate mind. Blessings to all, David

      That interpretation of Romans is wrong, Paul is talking about human depravity in general, not what happens to individuals. This probably comes from an over individualised (British spelling :-)) mentality which is typical of the west, but not the society Paul was living in. I have struggled with SSA too, but I do not reject God, and I never have. I have not always been saved, but I have never deliberately turned away from God. It does not work to apply this passage individually.

I think Sodom & Gomorrah were simply an example of sinful populations and what God thinks of sinful populations as a whole. Remember the flood?
      I've been taught, and I think the bible is pretty clear that, unlike what some would teach, there is no "scale" of sin. Homosexuality is like adultery, or theft, or murder. Adultery occurs regardless of you having sexual relations with another person's wife. Murder occurs regardless of you swinging an axe, or pulling a trigger. If your mind is on either, you have committed the sin, if you read Matthew 5.
      Is "nature" more important than God? Didn't God create "nature"? God created MAN and WOMAN to be complimentary. The act of homosexuality is therefore unnatural, and sinful, against God. Not against nature.
      I could blather on and on, without really coming to a conclusion except that there is no scale of sin and being same sex attracted is not, in itself, sinful. Lust is. Acting on it is.

    Nothing ad hoc about Vines argument at 13:00 minutes in. In pagandom and Rome it was the cultural norm for grown men to take advantage of adolescent boys, that is molest, rape, or coerece them into sex. And it was not mutual. It was the man always in the dominant position and the boy in submissive. This was also a common method of shaming losers in warfare.
    So in this context Vines argument makes perfect sense. Homosexuality at this time seems to by synonymous with those violent lustful things. NOWHERE in the Bible or ancient texts are these issues separated. So it's a huge assumption to then say monogamous male relations of love is what Paul meant by "homosexual". The context is incredibly heavy in the other direction.

    First question: What if Paul was wrong? What would Jeshua say about it? Were the centurion and his servant Jeshua healed due to the centurion’s faith likely lovers and not mere a master-servant duo?
    Question two: Are you even more harsh in your condemnation of divorce since Jeshua expressly prohibited it except for in the case of infidelity? Over the XXth Century, Protestant churches softened their policies on divorce and remarriage, but God did not. Jeshua specifically addressed this issue.

    • @rockonmadonna

      Addendum: If you interpret the Bible as holding that a loving, lifelong, monogamous same-sex relationship is evil but a consummated man and a woman who do not love one is another is okay, your theology is clearly warped because sound morals serve to promote human flourishing not to hinder it. Id est, the Law exists for humans and not humans for the Law.
      Are you familiar with theologian Eugene Roger’s reverse argument to yours that Christians should favor a more merciful and affirming stance on same-sex marriages because to deny the work of the Holy Spirit’s work in the sacrament of true love between two persons borders on blaspheming the Holy Spirit?
      Third question: Why such a hateful tone? There is nothing charitable or Spirit-filled in your tone. You may be right. You may be wrong. This is a peripheral theological issue in which Christians can disagree and still be devoted orthodox/Nicene Christians.

      I haven't watched the later videos to explain his take that gay people aren't born that way, but I do believe they are. We have plenty of people that say they have never felt any sexual attraction toward the other sex throughout their whole lives, and homosexuality is pretty well documented throughout history. I think it's just acting upon that lust that is the problem. For any person who is gay who is not a Christian, I don't expect them to live any other way because they don't have Christ in their life. A recent thing I heard that I like is you are born that way, but Jesus makes you born again. When you accept Christ into your life you are made into a new person, so you are in the world but called not to be of the world. I've seen good testimony of people who were gay and/or bi not having any same sex feelings or having reduced feelings after starting to walk in a Christian life. The Bible continually teaches us that the nature of man is sinful, and the only way to help us with that is with Jesus.

      @Josh Varghese God's will is for us to resist sin because God hates sin. God never said that we wouldn't be tempted with things. God has told us to have self-control over that temptation when it happens. As I said before, God has delivered people out of SSA, but it doesn't happen for everybody, and for those who it doesn't I would say yeah God looks to be calling them to live a celibate life if they can't see themselves romantically loving someone from the opposite sex. Now that may sound depressing, but also keep in mind whenever any Christian gets married both go into the marriage knowing that the spouse is not ever going to be number one. God is. I am straight, am in my mid-thirties, and have never had a relationship. Would I like to marry? Yes. But if God has called me to remain single for the rest of my life, then I'm going to be single. If God puts a man in for me to marry, then I'll get married. Christians always strive to do what God wants not what we want. Keep in mind also marriage is just another area of emotional intimacy we want to have, and you can get emotional intimacy in other areas of life. People have friends, they have family, they can do outreach, etc. You can do more things when you're not attached to somebody in a lot of areas as well, and God can use that availability. I think society has put so much stock that you have to be married, you have to have kids, you are not complete without that other person in your life. Only God completes us. Everything else is a plus. A Christian's goal is to glorify God and do his will to the best of their ability. And we do find joy doing that. Also, let's not forget that there are people who are completely fine being single.
