Hey Gary welcome to OO. We have a lot in common on the layout front. Space and gauge for starters. I also have my modelling desk under the layout but I put the layout baseboard in at 120cm from ground to give me access to the modelling table. I jumped in at era 5 with a heritage line touch so like you I can run steam and diesel. Nice fleet to start great collection already and some great research something I should of done more of. Looking forward to next video. Nice one.
Gary ! I’m still with yer ! ‘N’ gauge or ‘OO’ so glad you’ve gone back to your roots 1948 to 1968 era. Wow the Royal Scot looks great ! Looking forward to seeing how the layout develops, with your exceptional modelling skills it will be interesting to see.
Hello Peter, good to know you are still with me 🙂and yes back to the steam era, my favourite! The Royal Scot is a stunner as is my Jubilee which was not on show in the video. Very kind words, appreciate them, All the best for the New Year! Cheers Gary
Happy New Year to you Gary! I was very pleased to see this video drop into my video feed! It was a real New Year treat! You have some excellent plans, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how you design the track plan - especially how you're going to turn the locos around in such a small space! You've already built up quite a collection of locos that seem to fit right into your chosen location and era! Can't wait for Episode 2! All the best for 2025, Ian.
Hi Ian, Happy New Year to you! So pleased you enjoyed the video and the track plan video should be out in the next couple of weeks, fingers crossed! I have a cunning plan to run the locos in a loop which I probably was not entirely clear about in the video, this will be answered in the next video 😉. yes very happy with my loco purchases but did hit really lucky with Rails I bought 8 locos in one hit before they went as in mint condition and fitted the exact locos I was after! All the best to you for 2025! Cheers Gary
Hi Gary Sorry for the delayed comment I’ve been really busy. I’m really looking forward to seeing this new layout progress. And how n gauge techniques translate to OO gauge. Happy modelling, Nat🚂👍
Hi Nat, No worries just appreciate you leaving a comment! Yes I just hope my N gauge scenery approach does mainly transfer to OO but my grass lengths with definitely be longer 😂! Cheers Gary
Exciting times ahead Gary, a OO gauge layout, where you can get your teeth into the scenery magic you work so well at. I like the era, area and scenes you are going for in this one, also a really nice start to your rolling stock. I look forward to seeing your progress. All the best and Happy New Year. Brian
Hi Brian, yes exciting times indeed, good to hear from you Brian, hope all is good with you? Really appreciate your kind comments ☺ Happy New Year 2025 and all the best, cheers Gary
Hi Gary - Happy New Year to you and yours. Nice to see you back…….Ravenstonedale….great location with plenty of scope to exercise your modelling skills. Looking forward to sharing your journey (might give some inspiration in getting my modelling mojo working). Best wishes, Martin
Hi Martin, Happy Year to you and your family! Thank you for your kind words and Yes good to be back, I have really enjoyed the planning process and hopefully the next video will show what I do have planned and further inspire 😉! Really looking forward to getting cracking on with it but finding the time is always the hurdle to get over! I don’t think I will get to the baseboards until we get a dry and even warm weekend 😂where I can work outside! Cheers Gary
Hi Gary just came across your video, brilliantly put together very informative and immediately hit the subscribe button. Looking forward to your next video part two.
Hi Steve, really appreciate you leaving a comment and thank you for your kind words and subscribing to the channel. Part two should be out very soon! Cheers Gary
Hi matey, great start to a new series, looking forward to seeing this progress. Just something I spotted, I think your A4 might be the split chassis version, it may be fine but they can also be very troublesome - check your 2mt tank engine for thatvas well. Cheers Shaun
Hi Shaun, really appreciate you leaving a comment and pleased your are looking forward to future progress, I will do my best to deliver on that! I am not that clued up on OO locos but appreciate the information, I did a bit of research and hopefully the locos that I have are reliable! Cheers Gary
Hi Gary just subed looking forward to seeing more, l did the same thing as you have l do think 00 is better for me as my eye sight is not so good now hope you have a good 2025 all the best Colin from Mossend railway oo 😊.
Hi Colin, thanks for leaving a comment and great to have you on board as a subscriber! Yes OO is certainly better for the eyes and so much less fiddly than N gauge but it’s a hell of a challenge fitting into the limited space I have plans for with OO! Hopefully you will enjoy the channel and what I have coming up next with the track plans? Cheers Gary
Welcome back and Happy New Year. 2025 looks very exciting from 🚂 point of view. Glad your returning to OO gauge - me too so shoal watch your design and build with interest. Any special reason not to go DCC (can’t make up my mind!).
Hi Alex, Happy New Year 2025! Moved to OO due to reliability of N gauge locos and a lack of new steam models! As the layout will run on a double loop tail chaser and be simple in design I thought that DCC was overkill and with the price of DCC chips decided not to pursue this route at this point in time. May well put in droppers for DCC in the eventually I choose to upgrade in the future. Cheers Gary
Hi Gary, excellent video on your next adventure! Interesting to see you’ve scaled up, good luck with the build 😊 I’m sticking to n gauge for what I can do in a similar space in my garage, and simplicity will be the key, as yours is planned to be. All the best, and I will continue to watch as some of your ideas mirror some of mine. Cheers mike
Hi Mike, great to hear from you, we seem to be in a similar path as you say, thanks for the kind comments 😊 . I am just hoping the track plan works in the space and does not look like a train set! I will be keeping an eye out for your next video 😉! Cheers Gary
Greetings SC68 and hello Gary 👋 Excellent video on how to getting started in model railway building 👷♂️ with top planning tips 👍 Really looking forward to seeing 👀 Part 2 and finding out more about Ravenstonedale 🤩 It should be an excellent vehicle to show case your scratch building skills 😇 Very best wishes for a happy and productive New Year from the Emerald Isle ☘️
Hi Paul of Wickford ☘, thank you for your very kind words! Looking forward to the second video then the work of making baseboards will commence! Very best wishes to you and your family for the New Year , Cheers Gary
Hi Gary, great to see you back mate! Really like the plans you have for the new layout and of course the rolling stock. Looking forward to seeing how it all develops and some of the scratch building projects which I’m sure you’ll undertake. Happy New Year from all of us at Exehaven, cheers for now, John
Hi John, Good to be back, got my video mojo back and enjoy doing them once I get back in the swing! Yes scratch building id definitely on the cards but I have a cunning plan as to allow me to crack on with the layout without being held back by scratch builds😉😂. Happy New Year to you an your good lady wife Mrs Exehaven, cheers Gary
Hi Gary - great to see you back ! As with the N gauge layout I see you're continuing with the meticulous planning. Look forward to see the layout take shape over the coming months. Cheers Euan
Hi Gary. That was all very interesting Gary. It I'll be good to follow your progress and of course, look forward to seeing the track plan. A very nice array of locos, which will look good on what you have planned. Stephen
Hi Stephen, Glad you found it interesting and track plan video out in next 2 weeks. Yes got so lucky with the locos, they are mint and got them all for a very good price! Happy New Year! Cheers Gary
Hello Gary. It's good to see you back again. Your plans so far for your new layout look interesting and I look forward to seeing how they develop over time, as and when you can do videos about it. Best wishes. Mark.
Hello Mark, Appreciate your comments and yes hard sometimes to find the time and mojo to make the videos but when I do I really enjoy it and it looks like others do to which is always good to know! Cheers Gary
Lovely part of the world, I've walked many routes around Belah viaduct and over Smardale viaduct- would have loved to have seen Barah before it was demolished. Looking forward to watching your progress with this as modelling somewhere similar is in my mind for when I retire...
Hi, Really appreciate for leaving a comment and yes looking forward to walking Smardale but Belah must have been a sight to behold with trains crossing over it! Cheers Gary
Hi Gary firstly Happy New Year. Welcome back mate good to see you. I guessed the name as soon as the video started. The name plate above your right shoulder gave it away. I said that's a new nameplate I wonder why lol. Anyway great to see you back and enjoy the journey. Missed you at the new not warley show at the NEC, I thought the new layout worked very well. Maybe next year. Cheers for now Andy
Hi Andy, Happy New Year to you and the family! Yes I rather gave the game away with the name up from the start 😂😉. Yes back after an eventful 6 months but got my mojo back for doing videos again after a lean period. Yes I did not obviously go to the show at the NEC but in hindsight should have it would have been great to catch up again, yes maybe this year now in 2025!? Cheers Gary
Exciting times Gary, I look forward to seeing your progress. I'm sacking RUclips, didn't even make it to 250 subscribers in over a year and 26 videos, some who started at a similar time have 2, 3 or 4,000 subs - couldn't work out what I was doing wrong 🤔All the best, Chris
Hi Chris, Thanks for your comment but sad to hear your sacking RUclips, I must admit my numbers were not great they stayed static for 6 months but no video so not surprised! Stick with it, I must admit I do like to see the subscriber count increase but I really do enjoy making the videos and sharing it with others as that's how I learnt from knowing nothing of the hobby beforehand. Cheers Gary
We’ve got a similar taste in locos mate. Love the 4F If you’re interested in any coaches I’ve got a few to get rid! I’ve got some pullmans with lights.
A while back, and following your decision to move away from steam traction to (predominantly) diesel on your N gauge layout, I stopped watching your videos but... I have watched this latest video with great interest as you seem to have gone back to your roots, albeit with 00 scale this time. I like the plan but fear that the space you will be working with is somewhat smaller than you might need to reproduce your previous layout. I await the next episode with anticipation and an open mind. Good luck, Gary. Regards, Eric.
Hi Eric, Thanks for leaving a comment and good to hear your watching the videos again! Yes back to my roots with the steam traction but as you say the new OO layout will be smaller but hopefully my plan will still enable me to pack in what I wanted to include with the station and the other scenery without looking cluttered. Really pleased with the larger loco models so much easier to work with and loving the finer details on the steam locos! Cheers Gary
Hi you may have a hard time getting a good cave in 00 gauge in a 2ft board I have found it bit tricky if you can need go out to 3ft for a better cave looking forward to seeing the results
Hi thank you for leaving a comment! I will consider widening the base boards if I need to go to larger radius curves. I am however quite tight for room so unfortunately I can’t go the 3 feet boards. Cheers Gary
Hi Gary, something about this intro grabbed me, so I'll follow you and see where you go. I note that the track plan/OS map you showed - the 1897 revision - had no crossover between the two running lines (which seems impractical - was it an error?). The 1912 OS map shows a trailing crossover west of the goods yard turnout. Was that layout maintained into Era 4, or are you 'borrowing' an earlier layout for more operational interest?
Hi Clive, really appreciate you leaving a comment and great feedback thank you! Regarding the OS plan absolutely spot on and in the next video the cross over has been added to the layout but it does pose a dilemma for me as where I put it on the actual layout as you will see. Your input would be welcomed on this matter after the next video. Cheers Gary
Hey Gary welcome to OO. We have a lot in common on the layout front. Space and gauge for starters. I also have my modelling desk under the layout but I put the layout baseboard in at 120cm from ground to give me access to the modelling table. Hi Tony, yes totally agree, lots in common on the layout front the only difference your layout is well on mines not even started 😂! Cheers Gary
Hi Gary I'm a new subscriber if the attention to detail in the planning is anything to go by then the layout is going to look fantastic.
Brian
Hi Brian, thank you for your kind words, it’s much appreciated! Glad to have you on board for my new 00 journey. Cheers Gary
