I love his tone, it's not super heavy overdrive but just enough for a singing lead tone and it cleans up well when he backs the volume off on the guitar.
Jeff's writing, playing and production on Mogg Way's Chocolate Box cd is astoundingly great!!! All of his stuff is mint, but I honestly didn't miss Schenker when he made that masterpiece with the living legends from UFO: Phil Mogg, Pete Way and Paul Raymond. The always-awesome Simon Wright plays some very tasteful heavy rock drums, as well. Guitar freaks who like their shredding solos wrapped in soul-drenched bluesy hard rock will eat it up!
This guy came to a guitar workshop i went to up at Duquesne and he was absolutely amazing! He really knows his stuff and is a very technically proficient guitarist.
this guy has great style. I discovered him off of the Jason Becker tribute album Warmth in the wilderness. He plays a jam on it with other great players like Vinnie Moore and Steve Morse. I believe the song is called Jam for Jason.
Jeff Kollman is awesome! he's in my top five all time guitarists. his style is badass cause it's very tasty and melodic even though he shreds, similar to how paul gilbert is. jeff did some hair metal-type stuff in the 90s that had some cool playing on it and his first two solo albums are full-on rock shred!! definitely check his stuff out.
Why the negatives people? The guy is right. In fact they are both right. If you want why, read 'How equal temperment ruined harmony and why you should care' by Ross Duffin. The Buzz Feiten tuning system addresses some of the Major 3rd tuning issues of the B string by moving the nut forward and retuning accordingly, but its still a compromise- the problem is that the octave simply does not divide nicely into 12 perfect notes. If you play a fretted instrument, you are stuck with this problem. :)
He's on one of the Young Guitar DVDs and he mentions that he plays a totally stock Tele, not sure if this is the same one but it could be. He's not actually using that much gain in this clip IMO.
Infact, try this people... find the 4th fret harmonic (the major third). Notice its actually somewhat behind the fret? That's the size of the discrepency between where the real 'harmonically pure' major third lives and where equal temperment places it. Its a massive difference, and to classical composers an unacceptable one; they use all sorts of different tunings that locked them into playing certain keys where tunings were close to harmonically pure. The modern ear is missing out on all this!
Every time I see this video I get so excited about playing guitar like it was back when I first picked up the guitar.
I love his tone, it's not super heavy overdrive but just enough for a singing lead tone and it cleans up well when he backs the volume off on the guitar.
"master of tone, riffs, & chord voicing" - exactly right!

This guy is more metal than everyone.
Very unique playing!
Still better and more exciting than almost any guitarist playing today.

Well Jeff you must know this is over most our heads but all I can say is WOW!! Love the Cosmosquad stuff!! In a class all your own as a musician!

Wow I've never heard of this guy until today. His style is awesome
He has two or so solo albums out, but as stated in the description, he's played with Glenn Hughes, Cosmosquad, etc.

Absolutely sick, and inspiring.
This is th most interesting guitar I have seen in ages
Great player- thanks for posting
Hot stuff
one of the coolest i've seen so far
awesome tone coming from that tele... drooling.. hahaha
I dig it! He's a very unique player, rock vibe with a jazzer's headiness. It's a very organic sound.
Those tunnings are pretty cool to experience new things.
Jeff is a bright starr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2:28 same technique that he uses in "Cyclops" solo (Cosmosquad)
I've seen Jeff in concert three times. He's an awesome player. He has a band called Cosmosquad and use to play in an 80's rock band called Edwin Dare.
I've got a new guitar hero. I'm very impressed with Jeff Kollman. Yummy stuff.
kaan germirli The song is Cauldron of evil by Cosmosquad

That video really inspired me. Awesome tone (even surprised he got that out of a telecaster), great riffage and concepts/ideas.

Sick, original, awesome
he is so right about that nut thing!!! EVH used to say that as well
I love that tuning. Same one Foo Fighters use on "Weenie Beenie."
It's not often I hear a Tele sound like this or being played like this.
love his heavy tone . anyone know his amp
+Ali-Musa Kaba You might get surprised but his amp is Fender Twin. He is also using Marshall plexi and Super Lead. His tone is really awesome.
well spotted!

I would give my left leg to be able to play like him. Especially to be able to IMPROV like he's doin here!

He's on one of the Young Guitar DVDs and he mentions that he plays a totally stock Tele, not sure if this is the same one but it could be. He's not actually using that much gain in this clip IMO.
@ilovemiself32 "The Spy Who Ate Her" (Acid Test). This song is a masterpiece!! Probably my favorite Squad album too.
@evalex71 I can't stop watching this
humm never seen anyone tune the bottom two strings to drop c then the top 4 in standard, but it sounds pretty cool
does anyone listen to his solo albums? fking amazing!

I think he uses a Fender Supersonic these days. Do you know what gear he used in his Edwin Dare days?
Interesting that he never got the BFTS installed in his tele. He is right though that most manufacturers don't have the nut in the right place.
Yea, I realized that after I wrote it...hehe
i dont believe this guy isnt rated with 5 stars
Tele are great for all around in my opinion.
I probably know you guys from the Baked Potato! Hahahahah Jeff Rocks!!!
Does anyone know the name of the song that riff in the end is involved in?
haha, that tuning is immaculate.
WATCH THIS SUPER COVER!!!
anyone know what amp Jeff's using in this clip? Fender combo/HRD?
Does anybody know what "Cosmosquad" song he reffering to when he played that last riff before the vid ends?? I cant seem to find the song
I know it's a little late but that was from "The Spy Who Ate Her". Cheers!
How does he get that huge tone from single coils
@ilovemiself32 I think it's called The Spy who ate Her
Does anybody know the name of the song he's playing in the end? ("from his new cosmosquad record")
I know it's a little late but that was from "The Spy Who Ate Her". Cheers!
that's off the wall.
@fretlessfrizz never heard of guthrie govan?
I wonder if he was on this tuning for the chocolate box album

@@fpe thanks for help
@jazzstan89 +1 forever
yep ......
cuttin heads
what band is he in, or is he a solo artist?
he told you....
Tosin Abasi is the black version of Jeff Kollman
The nut's in the right place; it's the major 3rd that's in the wrong place.
Don't think I've seen anyone play with their thumb before vOv
in your face by bodom at :50 hahahahaha
learn your music theory kids
--> John 5? :)
a strat is the ultimate guitar though. the shape works. the most. more than les pauls. les pauls bridge is slanted up too much.
funny i know people that think a tele cant be used for metal LMAO...My Tele kills gibsons on contact...
Sorry that is Gottardo
solos sounds like
CHRIS POLAND!!!!!!!!
