You guys asked for it; EPF brought it: Golden Shiner Catch-and-Cook! The results were rather surprising...and if you are wondering: *yes, EPF does eat fish like a savage.*

You should do a freshwater skipjack herring catch and cook. There are millions of catch and cooks on RUclips, but not a single one where someone tries skipjack.

New to following you and I love the content I have seen so far. I grew up learning so many inaccurate stigma's of eating certain fish species as well as proper preparation. Over the last 10 years or so I started trying fish I was told were inedible when I was growing up. More times than not I am amazed at what I was missing out on. Cooking fish whole (even w/ head on for some of the larger fish I cook) has really opened my eyes to a better way of doing things. Less waste and the flavor is just amazing. A flavor profile you really can't get by eating only the fillet. If the water wasn't so polluted I would try even more "bad" fish. Unfortunately some that I want to try are on the "do not eat" list for the watersheds I fish because of PCB's. I think my best surprise so far was Fresh Water Drum (they call them Sheep-head in MI). I've always enjoyed catching them but never considered eating one. Turns out they are a fresh water cousin of Redfish (Red Drum) and they indeed have a similar flavor. For 20 years I believed they were not edible. Thank you for being brave and helping lead the way to change the hearts/minds of wasteful skeptics who think the only way to eat a fish is a boneless fillet.

That was my first time using the mix, so I slightly overcooked it, Mace. I wanted to be 100% sure that the fish was all cooked. Hah. But the mix is actually pretty good! For a _"as seen on TV"_ product, it was banging.

After your bluegill catch and cook (homage to your mum) I tried trout and sunfish cooked the same way. Really good and the only bones I couldn't eat were the back bones of the larger trout. Never would have thought to cook fish like this but it's really good.

  • @twistin140

Everyone has there own ways of doing things. with living on Lake Ontario with PBC's and at one time Mercury in the water, and Canandaigua lake one of the Finger lakes that had DDT in the water, we started to fillet all the fish we caught. this eliminated the belly fat of the fish where those toxins are. (except yellow belly bullheads, those we just skinned and gutted) after the fish were filleted we's soak them in a mild salt water bath over night. this would pull the gamey taste out but enhance the fish flavor and whiten the meat. Dad always used a cast iron skillet and Crisco lard, and he used a simple flour, salt and pepper for the coating. he'd cook the fillets till they were a nice golden brown. (talk about lip smackin good) Later on he got a basket type deep fryer and tried a beer batter. both were good, to each there own. Tight lines!
