  • Scoot Boots - My Padded Collar Mod
    Helps with:
    Rubs
    Boots flying off
    Comfort
    Securing gaiters
Directions: Just tape around the rim to make a collar. Use as much or as little padding as you like for a custom fit. You can tape right over Scoots Trail Gaiters, Endurance Gaitors, or get some thick density foam/padding and make your own custom padding. I use Cloth/Duct Tape. You don't want it too grippy - you don't want it too slippery.
Why it works - the same reason why human perform shoes and boots have a padded collar. It gives the shoe a rim and helps hold the foot in while providing comfort as your ankle twists and turns while in motion.
    Other Comments:
    1. The Scoot Boot Gaiters do need help staying on for extreme riding.
    a. Glueing them on as Scoots recommend - does not work. Sand, dirt, mud, water and the constant movement/friction and flex of the boots themselves just completely kills the glue. The glue sticks onto the gaiters well but doesn't hold onto the boots themselves well.
    b. Velcro and Buttons do not stay on
    2. My front boots now have over 950 miles on them and are quite beat up - still going strong though and with this mod, I'll be able to squeeze every bit of life out of them that I can.
    3. The biggest wear is showing at the toe where it looks like it's showing stress wear from the toe digging in and shoving off.
    4. List of things broken/failures:
    a. One brass screw top - just sheared it right off - easily replaced.
    b. Tore one of the front straps a little - that strap has gone ahead and done hundreds more miles without worsening so it must have been some freak thing that tore it in the first place.
    c. Lost a few pastern straps
    5. The white stuff you see on the boots are the remnants of my Sikaflex + Scoots experiment. That resulted in absolute failure. Lasair hated the texture of the Sikaflex. Also, if you use Sikaflex, that means the hoof can no longer move freely in and out of the boot - that causes issues with Scoots since that's how these boots were designed to work.
    6. Scoots are coming out with Oval Boots - these should work better for a bunch of horses - good news!

We use the Easycare Gaiters to keep them on. Had the same problem. We hope the Slim Scoot Boots have a better size for our horse.

Interesting. My Scoots look much like yours on the toes after about 2 years of trail riding. The heel strap has been an issue with too much pressure from the plastic so I turned the cushy gators to sit under ther plastic strap. That helped but the strap is still too tight. I'm gonna try heat stretching and then maybe your handy duct tape idea! Otherwise love these boots, they stay on well, and are very long lasting! Thanks for the info.

Just got Scoots for my older horse for which it's been a literal nightmare to find suitable boots due to the shape of the hooves (not healthy hooves), tried Cavallos, various Easycare boots and even the Equine Fusions failed (rubbing and 14 was too tight and 15 too big). Haven't tried Flexs, just tried on and they don't fit well, so pointless to test them.
Most boots just failed due to not staying on in canter. Or failing in difficult terrain (uneven terrain, crossing streams and ditches etc.). One Cavallo boot was killed when crossing a ditch and she stepped on it with her bare hind hoof and the boot just tore apart from behind and that was the end of it. Didn't cry much about it, I've never liked these boots. :D
Maybe I'm gonna need to do this padding too, so thanks for the video. Not sure yet though, we've just tried them only once so far. Ideally they should be a bit bigger than they are but the next size (8) is really big for her. I hope the 7 will adjust to the hoof. Maybe I'm gonna need to heat stretch the heel arches (high heeled hooves with big heel bulbs) but I'll check with the manufacturer before trying that.
If these fail too, I don't think there are anything else to try and might be forced to put some kind of shoes. :/

Heat stretch should be the very last option.
Padded Collar Mod is good if there's room. If these are already tight, it won't be an option. They do stretch out a tad in break-in period. Mud straps are highly recommended in your case and you can add the piping to that too.

@@DawnSChampion Well, she doesn't have normal hooves and if the heels can't fit to the arches as they should (I'm not sure, planning to send pics to the manufacturer to ask how they feel about the fit), I think the heat stretch's gonna be necessary.
Yes, I know about mud straps and have purchased them but haven't attached them yet.

I understand. Heat stretching can force the material to its maximum stretch, permanently. The plastic has a natural break in period where it stretches to fit just like when we break in our own shoes. One of the biggest strengths of this material is how well it stretches and goes back to shape. Heat stretching can affect that property and make it snap instead of stretching. So for me, that would be a last resort.

@@DawnSChampion I'm sorry I forgot to respond. I think I have to do that. I can't lower the heels more and on the worse foot we've got some rubbing. The better foot has just enough less heel so it's okay on that one. There's not much difference but apparently just about enough when it comes to the fit of the back of the boots.
Stretching was recommended by Scoot (I sent them pics for advice).
I hope it's gonna work for us well.

Have you done this mod on the newer style boots? Since the opening is lower on side, wondering how that works, to get padded on sides, under the hardware that pattern straps attach to

Hi Vyshtia - have you experienced with glue to fix the holes at the front of the boot when they wear out ( to get more wear out of them before replacing with a new boot) ? I've tried a few things BUT none stayed on long enough ( but wear out after 1 x ride - so not really worth the effort - Thanks for any advice

I have to make the pastern strap much looser than 2 fingers on my gaited endurance mare with thick pasterns ( I have to do the same thing with Renegades as well). Have you tried the slims yet?

    • @DawnSChampion
      @DawnSChampion  6 лет назад

Debra Freiberg - yes, I need mine looser than that on the hind hooves. Yes, I have a few videos out on the Slims.

Could you use this to snug up a fit rather than heat stretch the heel of a smaller size? My horse has two different size feet....

We do extreme stuff. I've found that over time, they get quite soft and looser - they're not holding on quite as well as when they were new. Now they come off at speeds over about 32mph. This mod does help it stay on by a lot though.
