There was never anyone else who played these pieces better than Gieseking. One small quibble about the performance of "Refets [sic] dans l'eau" is that the extraordinarily fast pace does much to show off the pianists prowess but little to suggest the idea of "reflections" which Debussy meant both in the literal sense and also in the psychological sense. We don't get much of a sense of the latter in this performance until the end of the piece.
Gieseking recorded Debussy short time before his death ; it-s a fact that the best recordings were shortly before their death , in fact theirs testaments of all a life : Yves Nat ( 1956 ) Beethoven 32 Sonatas , Clara Haskil ( 1960 ) Schubert Sonata D 960 , Samson François 1972 ( Debussy an half ) Gieseking ( Debussy 1956 ) ; for me Gieseking is the first recording Debussy in 20Th Century no comparisons possible with the others pianists to day as Preludes- Chopin by Alfred Cortot 1933 ( Alfred Brendel said not me )
Beautiful interpretation, It's great to be back after a long time
Bentornato, fantastico concerto.
