      Saint Chapelle, definitely in Paris, but France? Not just a building but a collection that makes up a whole. Le Mont Saint-Michel. So other worldly to me.

      So true. The first time I went, it was late afternoon--we were getting ready to leave and a docent told us to wait a few minutes. "Have a seat over there..." A few minutes later, the lights were turned off and the windows lit up. Before, I thought the building was amazing... I had no words when the lights were off. it was stunning.

      I would give this comment a thousand up votes if I could. It's the most magical spot in Paris...and I'm atheist! You would have to be without sight to not be moved by its beauty.

    I saw the Sainte Chapelle 56 years ago, and I still distinctly remember emerging from that narrow spiral staircase into the sublime radiance above. It was awe-inspiring, it was wondrous, it was -- well, unforgettable. Thank you, Manuel! You researched this building of marvels much more deeply than I did, and, with your help, I can now re-live and expand upon my impression of that day long ago.

      I was a fifteen year old girl on a school trip from Cornwall, more interested in boys than architecture of any kind when we were taken to Sainte La Chapelle. I was stunned by its beauty, by the colours and the light everywhere I looked. I never believed that could ever be captured on film, but you have come as close to perfect as anyone ever could. Well done and thank you for the pleasure it gives me to watch it again and again.

    Amazing to see the ancient stained glass looking so brilliant. It was removed and placed into safe storage during WW2, and its restoration was only completed in 2015. Photographing each wall in perfect lighting conditions was a triumph in itself.

    • @jeff__w
      @jeff__w 5 месяцев назад +2

      I haven’t been able to find anything about the stained glass being removed and placed into safe storage during WW2. What I _did_ find was that the restoration took place over a seven-year period ending in 2015 to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Louis IX, who commissioned the chapel.
      According to _Forbes,_ “…over 6,000 square feet of stained glass were removed, piece by piece, and analyzed with the precision of laser technology in order to determine the best way to remove what is known as ‘Paris Crust.’” No wonder the stained glass looks so dazzlingly luminescent!

    We first visited France in 1989, and went to Sainte-Chapelle three times. We returned on two subsequent visits in 2002 and 2017. As others say, coming up through the spiral staircase into the upper chamber is to feel a bit light-headedly paradisal. I saw someone complain about the cost of the entrance fee (then: 10 Euros in 2017), and figured they just preferred to go the movies instead.

    I just discovered your channel through your video on Rome, and immediately subscribed! I visited Rome for the first time two months ago. I'd never been to Italy before, and only once to Europe, briefly. I was flabergasted by Rome. So much history and beauty everywhere. I spent four days walking throughout the city, taking in so many of the sites. Your video was so excellently made, and taught me so much I didn't know, even after having been there. Last year I did a quick whirlwind through northern Europe. A last minute decision, as I was visiting Morocco for six weeks. I realized how close to Europe I was, so I took 10 days to hop over to Europe to visit some old friends I hadn't seen in over 35 years! On the way to Germany I had an 18 hour stopover in Paris. I did some research and decided that the place I most wanted to see was Sainte Chapelle. Crossing the Seine I could see Notre Dame under construction still. I stopped by, but only viewed it from the outside. I headed over to Sainte Chapelle, and to my great disappointment it was closed even though it was during normal visiting hours. A guard gave me a reason which I don't remember anymore. It had been open a few hours before, and would reopen again the next day. Unfortunately, that was my only time to see it. So I missed out! Thank you for gifting us this wonderful historical tour of Sainte Chapelle. Hopefully I can return one day to see it in person. Not being able to did have a positive effect, however. It offered me more time to visit the Eiffel Tower which I went up into, something I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to do.

    I visited the Sainte-Chapelle some years ago. Built between 1242 and 1248 during the reign of Louis IX or St. Louis King of France (1226-1270). It was said he attended Mass daily at the Chapel and there's a specific chair where he would sit. The stained glass windows survived the French Revolution in the late 1700s.

    I've been to that chapel. Nothing shown and said here compares to BEING there! It is, a magnificent and inspiring place - (I WILL be back, for sure)!

    I have really enjoyed your videos. Kudos. Sainte Chapelle stunned me. (in a good way)😇 Maybe the Pantheon in Rome had a similar impact. (your video on that was also impressive)
