Hey "Old School" you were able to help me a great deal with my Sony CDP-XE400 CD Player in my shop. I was at a loss on how to remove the unit to replace a broken tray belt. I was able to remove the front tray plate, and then disassemble the unit by moving the (4) tabs. Also taking a photo of the gear placement was a wise thing because the (2) gears fell out as I moved the assembly around. I was able to pull out the ribbon cable easily enough and re-install. Thank You for taking the time to document the disassembly of your Sony CDP-311. I found it odd that your belt was "missing" ? Mine was laying the to bottom of the tray unit. I used a Q-tip and lightly spread some lithium grease on the bottom of the tray gear and also the gearing associated with the belt. I think that over time the lubrication of the tray becomes dried out and the belt works harder and ultimately breaks. The belt I used as a replacement was a SCQ4.0; Square Belt; IC=4" C/S=.057"; Wall=.057". The bar code on the packaging had 65048_01905 Packaging had EVG on it and PRB LINE and the web site address had www.russellind.com The belt was a little smaller in diameter than the original but it seemed to stretch out reasonably well around the belt pulleys.

Cool! Thanks for the infos/tips and congratulations on getting the unit fixed! Right, odd that the belt was gone. Also, you are correct, the belts dry/glaze up and grease tends to harden. After all, these units have "lived" much longer than their intended lifespan. Especially thanks for the belt info. Always useful information to have. To this day, the CD player (we use it) works fine and is used almost daily.

Great job! Last Sony I worked on was a real pain to put back on the front panel of the drawer! Yes, lots of reference photo's, it has saved me several times, things fall off or accidently break wires! ~Jack, VEG

My player (CDP-407) just ejected always after closing the tray. Suspected the belt after checking service manual. Thanks for showing how to get to it, the plastic construction is a bit fiddly. I didn't have the exact replacement belt, but replaced mine with 35x1.3mm. Seemed to do the trick, fixed!

Very well done and lots of detail, the only thing I dont understand why did you need to remove the door cover for? It looks like the tray removes from the front?

Thanks! This is one question I can't answer because I no longer have the unit and it has been years since I worked on that unit. All I know is that the unit still works according to the woman that has it. So, I can't say why I removed it. Maybe it was easier that way and I had a better overview--just a guess.

@@OldSchoolElectronics I just did the exact same machine with the help of your video, and as I was trying to remove the tray door cover, the whole tray assembly just pulled out forward. But the tray can also be removed inward, so in this case definitely the cover has to be removed. Either way your technique worked for me !

Nice video, thanks. I've been trying to replace the belt for my Yamaha E600 DVD player, but no luck finding/verifying the correct parts from the places that sell OEM Yamaha's belts, even Yamaha itself. Would you have any idea how to find the correct parts?

QUESTION? If I keep a few belts replacement, just in case that my cd player breaks down.
Is there a way to preserve the rubber belt for a long time. I was told to put the rubber in baking soda, do you have a better advice?

I would just follow the normal rules: protect from heat and cold, keep out of the sunlight, don't store in bags that have plastizer (softener) in them, and keep them dry, that is, make sure they don't come into contact with liquids. I have never heard of baking soda as a preserving agent, only as a cleaning agent.

Hello, I have a Sony CD player CDP-M11 but tray opens by itself and because of this it doesn't plays any CD. Any suggestions?

Hello. It's been awhile since I worked on a CD player, but I remember there being leaf switches for the opening and closing of the tray. These switches might be dirty. You might start by cleaning the switches by using a thick strip of paper soaked with isopropyl alcohol and pulling this paper between the switch contacts. Carefully! Also, don't wait forever since alcohol drys really fast. Do this a few times. If that doesn't work you can try fine sandpaper. I would use at least 400 or even finer. I don't remember how easy these switches were to expose, that is, whether they were under a cover or not.
