I have the dark green Jimny and something is a little off with them. Perhaps it's the lower voltage on the 4 aaa batteries. I think wiring in a LiPo and coming up with some better metalwheel/tire combo would do the trick nicely.

The added weight of the fake is mostly due to the larger screws used - like a weighted lower center of gravity.
For $90.00 there is not much to complain about. The question is does it accept the real Mini Z hop-ups or are you stuck with what you get out of the box?

It'd be nice to think that the existence of such knock-offs might influence Kyosho to price their RCs more sensibly. For instance, their new Mad Wagon has plastic shocks while being priced at an outrageous £439.

I wouldn’t feel bad about showing off a “knockoff” of a Kyosho vehicle, because if we are all being honest with ourselves, mini-z’s are extremely overpriced, and very outdated tech. If Kyosho wants to charge over $200 for a 1:24 scale RC, it should come with modern RC tech, not the same system from 20 years ago.

@@TomleyRC I sort of agree, however, 2 things kyosho has likely considered:
      1. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

    • @microrigs

As all said, the Kyosho is overpriced, everyone in the scene that bought a mini z 4x4 noticed they are weak and un capable. For the price you can get an Axial (not to mention a cheap Chinese copy) and a ton of upgrades... And have way more fun.

Tomley get yourself a few 3.7 volt lipo AAA batteries and a few dummy AAA cells. you will end up using 2 dummy batteries and 2 real batteries for more juice in each mini z. It will give you just over 2 volts more then the 4 AAA setup. What a difference it makes. More juice = more power!!! This is how I setup my mini z's now. My brushless mini z Evo kit must do about 20 mph now. It just about doubles the speed of any mini z. Great video Tomley 👊👊👍👍

Considering you could spend the cost of the car on upgrading the electronics to create a superior setup and still not spend more than the genuine one, that seems like the better option. Miniz is more for scale than pure performance, tyres are smaller and with different thread also it’s a straight axle over worn gears so you have the benefit of rolling.
Not to try and justify 200$ on it, don’t get me wrong I feel like minizs are fairly overpriced but it’s hard to compare as they aim for different things

I mean, I like the brands but my biggest issue over 40 years of the hobby has been "excessive pricing", NOW, there are plenty of options. Most times you can find a competitor that's better for less, a lot less . Considering the original is not only made in Japan (at least from what I can tell, the parent company has changed ownership several times in recent years), better materials are used, QC is higher and the bodies are licensed, I just couldn't buy the clone despite how good it is. The more we support companies who steal IPs and have no original designs of their own, the less time and effort legit companies will put into original designs. just sayin...

I have to absolutely agree with Chuck.
I have been a Lego builder for the last 50 years of my life and it truly annoys me when copy cats steal the designs that Lego engineers have spent countless hours working on.
The same with Kyosho, their engineers have spent a lot of time designing their products as well as paying license fees for using the body design.
Perhaps if people stopped supporting the copy cat companies and supported Kyosho they could lower their prices and refresh their designs.
BTW - LOVE the channel, has helped me get back into the RC hobby. Thanks Tomley RC!!!

For the record though. It is not only the Chinese that clone. Germans do it too now. For the ALDI store they got that River Cola. It got the same colors and writing style too. Frankly it even tastes the same yet costs ~1/3 of the original Coca Cola that you can by at the same ALDI right next in the same shelf.
I am all for supporting original creators but only for a limited time like a bonus. I am afraid over a period of decades those original creations become abusive and rip you off.

Kinda reminds me of what Happened with RocHobby and Eazy Rc. EAZY Rc ended up being the same company as Rock Hobby using maybe slightly lesser quality packaging and lesser quality material. Maybe Kyosho owns owns the lesser brand and is putting out a copy cat of their high end vehicle knowing that Kyosho fans won’t go for the lesser model, yet making money on the green one , because there is a market for these for guys like me who like to save money. My bet is the “clone” is actually an affiliate company to Kyosho. Bet they will sell a ton Of these clones while selling a fair amount of overpriced mini z’s too to people who are brand snobs and value means nothing! Great video Phil!😎👍🏻🍻

problems with the fake one so far
1 not ACCEPT miniz light, smoke right after power on!!
2 servo is more stiffy than the original, the VR is different but response time feels no difference.
3 plastic parts such like the shaft are way more fragile than the original, it will brake very soon. Mine cracked in a week.
4 transmitter trimming all in wrong direction, so if you trim to left, it will go right. Front will go back..
5 front light cups need to drill 3mm hole to install leds...
6 you cant reset center point from transmitter like the miniz does, only way to center is from the trim vr.
But for $90, it worth to get one for the spare parts and nice body.

I have always had a fascination with nini-z but the older tech, hard to get parts etc I went with an scx24 gladiator instead for crawling. I still want a mini-z AWD car with a skyline body if I can ever find one.

Most people upgrade the electronics in all the mini Crawlers, I have 5 and not one has stock motor left in it. I have 1 with stock servo still kicking but I don't think will last much longer lol. Fcx24 and scx24 are killing it with upgrades and aftermarket parts all over. Furitek, mofo rc and ccxrc are some of the best I've seen.

Being new to the hobby I can't seem to understand the draw to the mini z. Seems like you can get a scx24 or fcx24 cheaper and they have more support and better tech. For $200+ I was quite underwhelmed by the mini Z when I had a chance to use one. I felt like it should be around $100 considering what else is out there for those price points. Went with a FCX18 and could not be happier. Just ordered a FCX24 Black K5, he was sold by the 2-speed motor and the look. Can't blame him 😀

The difference is simple, Kyosho spent a lot of money and time to develop a good product, source quality parts, get the scaling correct, licenced the Jeep image, and then some chynese thief swooped in and copied it for free. Now lets all run out there and reward the thief.

Raw performance that's a serious competition. $90 is doable for many people where $200+ isn't. That's definitely the case for me. I do not like how directly they cloned the Mini-Z right down to using their product name on the box... but... I'm broke and want to have fun. Kyosho could price closer to a range I can afford or they can live without my sale while the clone gets it... clearly it's possible to make those vehicles at a profit for far less money. :\
