  • This music composition lesson begins with a reminder of how to form an augmented 6th chord with its three variants, the Italian French and German 6ths. The video goes on to explain which are the most common resolution chords, considering the reasons why these chords work better than other options, examining voice leading, the smooth progression of parts, and the avoidance of parallels & false relations. This video will empower you to use augmented 6th chords in context and demonstrates why they are essentially pre dominant chords.

Very helpful. Interesting that to my ears, your minor version of the Ic progressions sound much more satisfying.

I'll come back to this later.
Your video on the Rule of the Octave was a life changer. I saw it four months ago. I'm trying to master triads in all major keys in all positions. I'm almost there, and my piano teacher is supportive since he's noticed an improvement in my keyboard skills. After I've tackled the major keys, I'll do the minor keys, harmonic, melodic as well as natural. Once I've done that, I'll tackle seventh chords. And then I'll be ready for this.
I would like to thank you and Alex for your excellent videos. All the best for the new year.

The parallel 5ths that occur in the German Augmented 6th are acceptable since they follow their natural movement. They are often called Mozart's 5ths since he uses this resolution.

Superbly enlightening as usual dear Gareth. What about keeping D at tenor in French delayed resolution so as to create a Ic9 effect before landing on V? All the best for a fruitful and musical ny2024 from Italy!
