    Loved this - great video! I thought of you today as I finally managed to locate a copy of Alberta and Jacob and it arrived this morning! And here you are talking about it 😊 Congratulations on 300 videos lovely Marilyn! ❤

      Hello Jack, I’m so happy that you’re going to read Alberta and Jacob. You will love it. One thing I didn’t mention I had in common with Alberta, but you know is that she also had what is called a lazy eye. This affected her life as it did mine and I love that Someone understood how a relatively small defect can affect you? Aloha dear friend.

    This topic really caught my eye! I have read Persuasion several times, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn a couple of times, and Brat Farrar just once. Oh! I've read Night, too. Now I'm curious about the other ones. This was a great roundup of potential rereads!

    This was the best video I’ve seen you do. What I remember from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is the girl (whose name I can’t remember) reading books out on the fire escape and her deep love for books which I identified with. Barbara Comyns is great also. I wonder if the scene you like is her in the maternity ward describing her birthing experience. I laughed out loud at it. I also have every book Josephine Tey ever wrote. She’s one of the first mystery writers I read as a young person . I’m 81 so 74 seems young to me. There is a new biography of Agatha Christie which I think you would like by Lucy Worsley called Agatha Christie.

      Hi Cion, thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, that was the scene that cracked me up. Not only because it was so funny but it reminded me a little bit of my birthday experience in 1969 though not as drastic as that one. Yes Francie was the girls name( and I really loved her. Thank you so much for the recommendations, I will definitely look out for Agatha Christie’s new biography. I love her mysteries so much. Aloha friend.

    Hi Marilyn, This was a great topic ! I own many books that I keep because I love them, and I think I will re read in the future.However, I also have many books that I want to read for the first time. I think as far as re reading books...I always go back to the classics(Jane Eyre,Wuthering Heights etc.). I did re read "Perfume", by Suskind,and Wuthering Heights recently. I have some cherished books that I re read hoping that they will have a "Happier" ending than what the Author originally wrote (The Thorn Birds). When Jacqueline Kennedy passed away, her son John Jr. said she died with her books surrounding her in her bed. There are books that we just cannot part with,even in our next "Transition". They are are part of us Forever.

Whenever I unhaul a book, I try to make sure I really don’t want to reread it. Thank you so much for watching. Aloha friend.

    Hi Marilyn 👋🏽 I experienced colorism too, as a child...I was sometimes bullied for being the darkest grandchild. My parents were very loving all of the time - but other relatives would compare and make remarks related to colorism. I would like to read Josephine Tey. 🫶🏽

    • @MarilynMayaMendoza
      @MarilynMayaMendoza  27 дней назад +2

      @@books_and_bocadillos Hi Mariandrea, yes, colorism is a thing. I was only seven years old and my grandmother called me la Rubia. And she made my older cousin do the housework. So the older cousin would beat me up when my grandmother wasn’t looking.. She also did other things like leave me at school that really messed me up, psychologically. I always wanted to be darker. But of course, I didn’t realize at the time at that young age that it probably was worse for my cousin. Josephine Tey wasn’t an unusual person. She was very introverted. I wanted to say more on my video, but it was getting really long. Have a wonderful holiday. Aloha friend.
