I believe that everything is blamed on smoking. I am a retired nurse and no , I don't smoke.

What difference is it that you are a retired nurse?

And when you tell a doctor that you don't smoke, they don't know what to say or blame!

I don't believe that smoking alone caused this degree of severe blockage in his arteries and veins. I know it is a contributing factor...especially to heart disease... but this? How is his heart not also messed up? How tragic overall.

It's well known. It's called "peripheral arterial disease" (PAD) aka "smoker's leg". Nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict - it can happen in a leg instead of in the heart itself. He's been smoking for 40 YEARS, plus drinking plus doing a job with a lot of sitting. Lots of risk factors.
