Learn to play the steel pan, didgeridoo, and perhaps learn the theremin
Still waiting for the hockey vid ;)
Loved this idea!
Yes, please! This video was a really creative idea and I really liked to watch you learn, practice, fail and succeed! This whole process to me is what RUclips is all about!
Or simply commit the trumpet thing and bring us along to your very first lesson with an actual teacher :D
I love how you committed to teaching yourself 8 in 8 and once you talked yourself into the attitude of "I'll learn or at least I can say I tried" so yes.
Also, I saw MJ describing and demonstrating "How" to Moonwalk and the trick is that while you're sliding one foot back, just as you're about to slide the other foot back you slide forward with the one you just slid back. It worked for me and I don't dance at all.,.but I don't stand still either 🤣
Yes, 8 more after you recover from tired cheeks, hurting legs, and the abrasions on your neck.✌️♥️🎸🎶🙏
As a lifelong guitarist.... I kindly thank you for attempting that guitar throwing around the body thing so we don't have to 😂
I own a guitar
I tried it
I owned a guitar
May we have a moment of silence for everyone who has poked an eye out or lost a guitar to a flip

I'm impressed by the progress you made with the trumpet in 1 hour. I've played the flute for a while and it has a similar thing going on with the embouchure. I've heard that the trumpet is one of the harder brass instruments to get the embouchure down on.
trumpet is hard af man, i can make good sounds and pay a couple octaves, but for me the hardest part is improv and phrasing with the fingering positions
Indeed. After not playing for many years now I've completely lost everything except the memories, can't make a note
I've played trumpet for more than 10 years at the music school and the hard part is, that you have to make the exact pitch with your lips..the fingering part is, compared to guitar, pretty easy imo.
And you have to practice constantly, otherwise you loose your muscles pretty fast. Haven't played for a few years now and can't make a single clean tone anymore. French horn is similar.
I play trumpet guitar and flute among many others and so far I have found that trumpet for sure has a very strange embouchure and while your problems with flute are very hard to deal with they will eventually get better just by playing at all but with trumpet you very much have to focus on that and it doesn’t only get better by playing. You have to put that as a priority
Trumpet isn’t that hard tho. But take it with a grain of salt because I’ve been playing for 6 years now
Brother I've been playing trumpet for 18 years now and you accomplished in like an hour what took me a month to do when I was first starting out. Hell of a job!
trumpet progress is real dude! i’ve been playing for almost 9 years now and the best advice i’ve heard is to tighten the corners, just the corners of your lips, and make sure you are pushing air with your diaphragm. also, think of it like your blowing air through the horn, not into it. hope this helps!
I was chuckling after "it's been submerged" and the pool jumping clip, but then the it cuts back with "several times..." delivered deadpan and I gaffawed. Yet again SG's timing proves to be golden... 😆
Great job on the trumpet! That was leaps and bounds better than my first hours attempting
I love that the hand whistling thing was the hardest of these. Honestly it's the most tempting one to learn myself too, might have to look into this
The last one with the spoon is actually really cool! You can play the rhythm and melody on the same guitar! That is definitely something I want to learn myself. Always love your videos, keep up the amazing work!
Indeed , sounds really interesting 🙂
Seems you've been working on your editing as well as your musical skills! It didn't go unnoticed :)
This is my favorite video you’ve done. I’ve been scared of sweep picking for so long. You’re inspiring.
Approach sweeping slow and methodical. If you try to sweep at 200 bpm starting out, you will not improve the techniques of muting and the flow of your picking hand. Be sure to use a metronome when practicing this, or the notes will feel sloppy.
@@joecinder will do! Thanks a million!
I don't think I had a full octave on trumpet until I'd been playing for months. Much respect!
Speaking of guitar/brass crossovers, there's a cool Trent Hamilton video where he shows the relative pitch distance each of the valves gives you and shows how combinations of valves don't line up with guitar frets, which is why valved brass need tunable valves.
I LOVE the "you can do it" message at the end of this. It was fun watching you try all these skills, but that little hook at the end zipped the video into inspirational territory. I feel like I can use this as inspiration to pump up my own guitar skills. Thanks, Sammy G!
This was awesome! I love the branching out along with the cinematography!
The “hambone” thing 2:57 here was hilarious
this video was SO much fun to watch
I hear you on the trumpet. One of my favorite songs of all times is Hands by Moving Mountains- the way the trumpet (and some other brass) comes in on the crescendo absolutely makes the song soar.
Some cool Mike Boyd vibes here.
It's amazing what a person can learn when they go "all in" on learning.
I once played a gig with this band where the guitarist was playing a brand new $1000 guitar, he went to do a guitar flip and it fell off the strap and the headstock broke right off. It was one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen
Loved the editing and videography style in this video!!
The commitment to put all this work into 1 video! I wish I could like this more than once
You had me at the trumpet...and then you moonwalked all the way to spoon guitar. Thanks for sharing your journey and the joy of learning.
A really crazy dance move to learn is the GROUCHO swinging leg thing. It looks insane, he made it look easy, and brother, it will WEAR YOU OUT.
0:42 I totally felt that reaction 💔
I'm inspired. Here is my list of skills to learn today. Playing on the 1. Playing on the 1-and. Playing on the 2. Playing on the 2-and. etc
The trumpet bit was really cool for me, I have played a lot of trumpet in my past and still dable with it from time to time, and yeah it was cool that you were able to figure out how it makes sound in an hour
Hey Sammy! That video was just hilarious as always. Love your content keep it up and greetings from Germany ☺️
Love the energy and editing on this one. Keep it up!
I loved everything about this video. I am also a father who was unable to whistle with the power of banshee scream. Now there are a dozen stray dogs in my garden...what power!
This one goes out to you, Trevor ✊️
The microtonal trumpet jam was badass
I've been learning the drums for a couple of months now, and this feels like a bad omen
This is my favorite video you have ever made. Glad you found a use for the HM Strat.
My grandfather can whistle louder than anyone I’ve ever heard. As a kid, I could hear him whistle for me from blocks away and I don’t even think he uses his hand! So as a father of two myself, I also decided to finally learn it a few months ago. I still need to work on consistency, but the one time I really did it I had no idea I did it because it was so loud I basically deafened myself temporarily and my wife, who was sitting next to me and doesn’t have great hearing, assured me that I had done it. I basically only heard the echo of it in my house but it was like I had imagined it. Thankfully my kids are sound sleepers who sleep with loud white noise since we have a small house. 😂
I made the first move back in the 90s with one of my first guitars. No strap locks, though. I have had to screw my head (guitar head) back together because the guitar went straight to the floor head first.
SPOONMAN!! (this was a fantastic video as usual Sammy G, i can't wait to see the next incarnation of it! keep up the good work!!)
> Takes all precautions
- Guitar still hits ceiling, Strap comes off, Still ends up on floor.
You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?
I'm impressed by the improvement in an hour of trumpeting. Right on!
I did the guitar spin when I was a kid after seeing Steve Vai do it. I think he pushed it backwards though. It was pretty cool the first 5 times before it went flying.
Was it a V?
Flipping the guitar is like working a hula-hoop. You have to add centrifugal force by swinging your body a bit.
Centrifugal force is an apparent force, therefore you cannot add it. You can only sense it's apparent effects.
it’s amazing to me how you can rock doing a silly video like this. please to keep them coming, serious *or* silly. I need all the relief from my condition that I can get.
As a former trumpet player (also French horn) before moving briefly to electric bass then electric guitar, this video made my day. Watching you try and play the trumpet made me giggle! I may never play guitar at a level that even approaches your ability (or any other RUclipsr's for that matter), but I'll always have the satisfaction of knowing that my rudimentary trumpet playing skills from high school marching band would win that category. BTW, every newbie trumpet player learns to play "Taps" (because it has the easiest fingering for a newbie) the same as every newbie guitarist (of my era) learned to play "Smoke on the Water".
Definitely have been to a local show and the guitarist did the flip, and definitely watched the screw dislodge, but it was the other one than you did on yours
LOL as a trumpet player, I'd forgotten how hard it was to learn to get good tone
You blew my mind with the whistle! I had no idea of the tongue position! Thank you soooo much! I can finally start this journey! Hahahahaha 😄
Also, the amount of trumpet skill you amounted with an hour only is impressive! 😊
This was a really cool vid, keep it up
I have never been able to play the guitar, despite giving it a real go.
I've always managed the swingy-instrument-on-a-strap thingy really well though, so I guess we're evenly matched with that instrument.
I really enjoy your New signature closer, it's just so wholesome
This is actually a great idea to commit to learning a new skill for 1 hour.. and the trumpet was actually impressive.. I'm tempted to buy one now..
What kind of sick monstrous savage sweep picks on the bridge pickup?! YOU SIR ARE AN UNSPEAKABLE CAD!
Love it Sammy G! Always a pleasure to see a new video from you!
I practiced the hamboning on both sides to the tune of We will rock you since it’s the same basic rhythm and consistent all the way through. Seems like a good skill to continue building especially for the casual musician. I can see myself sitting around a campfire or similar setting with my friends and if I’m not playing some basic guitar I could or somebody else could do this and just sing together. That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far but I’m tempted to learn the guitar swing trick too 😂 This was a really cool video concept man.
I really like the rhythmic choices in the sweep part.
“I could probably spend an hour practicing drums… but I’m gonna practice twirling this instead”
You just summed up my entire musical career in one sentence
And Trevor's, it sounds like.
I played trumpet for 8 years. I'm genuinely impressed you were able to get that good at trumpet in under an hour.
Love this video! I've tried almost everything in the video but I gave up pretty quickly. This video inspired me to retry the drumstick spin trick.
Im so happy your course is on sale SammyG, Ive started playing guitar again since before lockdown and am genuinly having so much fun on the instrument for the first time I can remember, was toying with the idea of buying your course so Im gonna treat myself to an early XMas present!!
Greetings from Mexico!!! this is one of your funniest videos
Awesome cinematography. Loved the transitions!
The guitar flip is considerably easier if you throw it the opposite direction (bottom first) - as shown at 0:12 - though I would throw it using the body and not the neck as throwing it by the neck seems to make the orbit a bit squiffy.
It also tends to look a lot smoother bottom-first, and from what I’ve seen, slightly less people seem to break their guitars this way than by trying the “neck first” method. 😂🙌🏻
Bravo! The donkey part and the spoon are priceless!
I wasn't expecting the uplifting message at the end. Thanks, Sammy.
This was a fun episode ! Good job on the trumpet ! That was impressive !
A tip for the trumpet ( From a beginning Band Top student) the way you did it was perfect, aside from rolling your lips in. so what you can do is place the bottom lip below the top lip and create a very narrow slit of air. this should give you a sound that sounds like a mosquito when put on your mouthpiece. Hope this helped! Love ya Ol' Sammy G (I also play guitar, piano, violin, and standard drumset.) Also find the right grip LOL
0:57 I see what you did there 😂
Impressive on all counts. Nice edit when you dropped the stick.
You had me cackling with your trumpet skills XD
I could never!
I just love this guy so much
Absolute fire 🔥
The sweep picking and the spoon were inspiring.
But damn, “Trevor“ must’ve done something bad to get put on blast TWICE😂😂😂
Right?? I need to know more about Trevor....he's an interesting character in the Samuraiverse.
@@dfarr6518 Trevor doesn't actually exist but rather he is the imaginary musician who encompasses all the awful characteristics of musicians I have met in the past and don't want to actually name. I think his first appearance was in the "Oddly Satisfying things only musicians can appreciate" video.
Trumpet was hella impressive! You basically did what most new players do in about a week, within an hour. XD hells ya!
The results of the trumpet one are genuinely impressive. I’d love to see you continue to progress with that
Hello as a guitarist and, trumpet play yes I can play both states guitar first. I just have to say that for just learning that is an hour it sounded great it is better than some people who have played for longer. You’re great.
Coolest drumstick trick I ever learned was to throw it on the floor so hard and on such an angle it bounced back to my hand
Buzzing your lips and keeping the corners of your mouth tight are the way to go as far as the trumpet goes. Always be mindful of how you're causing higher notes to come out, as that should be accomplished through the speed of the air you're moving and not through pressure. If you see marks on your lips from pressing the mouth piece into your face, you're pressing too hard. Also, start with notes under second line G and play LOTS of long tones, focusing on keeping your tone quality steady. This helps build up stamina and keeps you from developing bad habits. Hope you go back to it at some point, it's a fun instrument! And if you get really invested, I highly recommend investing in "Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet". Great exercises designed to help you improve, it's referred to in a lot of circles as the Trumpet Bible. lol
Great work Sammy G!
This is just incredible
5:02 haven´t played trumper in....ever. But that explanaition makes me imagine it´s in it´s own way, similar to playing pinch harmonics in a guitar, cause each one needs your picking to be precisely on one spot and can be easily messed up
Trumpet not Trumper
no I've been a trumper player for 76 years it's actually scientifically known as the trumper
@@trumpetboy1014 plz don´t be disappointed in me trumper boi :(
@@diegoflores3831 Trumpet not Trumper.
@@trumpetboy1014 that´s what I said, trumper
Excellent video
That super smooth transition into the drum section!
The way you bashed the rotating drumstick out of your hand sending it flying is exactly what I experienced on accident, denting the flawless CAR-finish of my Gretsch 😅
I played trumpet in high school, but lost my embouchure when I lost my braces. So as last chair, I was asked to switch to tuba where I thrived for the next eight years. I recently, after 35 years, I finally relearned trumpet. The trick is not to thing of biting the airstream where tighter is higher, but to picture your mouth like the opening of a squeaking balloon. The lips need to vibrate, and stretching allows that while changing the pitch. Biting just starves the instruments air.
5:50 Upset infant trumpet
Great content as always , thank you 🙂
11 minutes of my life I wont get back. I watched to the end because you committed to the tasks. That was your "comedy episode". 😀
YOU KNW WHAT, the musical skills were the friends you made along the way, good work sammy
As someone who has played the fanfare in a fanfare band for over a year - the progress you made with the trumpet in an hour is amazing!
“Everyone’s dad” 🤣 That comment about the whistle is soooo true!
2:57 Me looking for my keys and phone. XD
Thanks Sammy G... now I have to figure out how to whistle like that now too. Always wanted to, but could never get it.... off down the YT rabbit hole!!!!
Very cool video...great job. Enjoy your new skills!
Okay I’m a trumpet player and I ain’t great but I’m just going to tell you that to be able to play a middle c (trumpet is in the key of b flat) within only a couple minutes is actually really good. Like REALLY good. The difference between guitar /woodwinds/percussion and brass is that, like that hamboning thing you did, our body is our instrument. By this I mean we don’t have a string or reed or something like that to vibrate for us to make sound. We do that all on our own by vibrating out lips together and using them to make sound waves. TLDR, great job that’s some great progress and I hope you keep up the great work and continue the playing trumpet!
ok, the zoom composite at the beginning is pretty slick. i think you're just using native resolution to pan out, but i remember when these shots were difficult for hollywood. well done, eh!
i took trombone lessons for a few months... they're not so fun at parties, as you might think.
I've been a trombone player as well as a guitar player for many years and recently decided to relearn trumpet (I say relearn because I learned it one summer in 6th grade and never picked it up again). Already playing trombone definitely helped a lot.
Quick tip for making sound is say "M" and use that embouchure shape to make your lips buzz. Lips should be roughly 50/50 upper and lower lip but er on the side of more upper lip. Also for notes above high concert F (the G on top of the staff in trumpet music) you want to arch your tongue to increase air speed and hit higher partials more easily. Oh one more thing try to use as little pressure on the mouthpiece as possible.
Ahahaha yes the screw coming out. I ended up throwing mine across the room in my earlier years. That guitar went through much there was only the neck left of it which I held onto for a long time. Until gremlins stole it or something no idea what happened to it. I love the last bit with the spoon hahaha I have to give that a try next time I get the rust out.
That lil trumpet toot! 🤗
Love this video, perfectly crafted, edited and executed. Great job
Doctor Sung from TWRP does a guitar flip with his ~$2000 keytar onstage at every single show. He's thrown it across the stage at least twice
im falling in love with your dry sense of humour :)
