The way I see it the reason you'd go to port Merrick over any other port is because it's the best port in the game. Not because of any mechanical differences but because of layout. With a lot of verticality, closed hallways and arches, and tight turns as well as back doors this means that multiple crews may be using the port at once, and without being aware of each other. Which isn't really too possible with any other outpost in the game. Furthermore if you're getting chased, and want to get all the treasure off your boat quickly. Port Merrick is the best outpost in the game because Sovereigns are on a raised position, you can harpoon your loot and you only have three entrances to worry about, meaning you can defend your loot much more easily. Additionally with the height of the structures in port Merrick you can use it as a line-of-sight break with enemy ships, allowing you to employ dastardly schemes, and for the sly pirates you can use the underground waterways, and tight corridors to open up opportunity to board, tuck, and steal from larger crews. The whole point of Port Merrick is that it does everything any other port does but it's better at it.
FR its so lifeless itd be cool to see maybe island npcs travelling there sometimes like say deadshot charlotte was walking around the port and youd turn the crates in there instead of lone cove
One issue I find is that because of the much larger size, golden sands just seems so empty now. Especially with the docks, where the entire area is populated only by the merchant and the shipwright. With all the new efforts made to make the sea seem more alive, having such a desolate port is sad
The only way in which golden sands feels empty is a lack of strolling npcs and townsfolk. Everything else is great. I think you get that “empty” feeling because the trading companies are now more spread out.
I love Port Merrick. It looks absolutely amazing but it needs more NPCs in it. It feels like a ghost town. Bringing in dice and board games would be cool too. You could hang out and play for hours without even leaving the tavern. Aside from that, changing ship types mid-session really needs to happen. Being locked into whatever ship size you initially choose is a pain if someone has to leave or if someone else wants to join. That flexibility will make casual sessions much easier.

I've sort of fallen off playing SoT as much lately. Which is sad because I'm just barely short of 1k hours. But the one thing that does keep pulling me back is the Golden Sands updates. I put so many hours into saving Golden Sands. I played even when I wasn't feeling up to it to ensure it got rebuilt. Seeing it turn into Port Merrick has made me proud. I may be semi-retired as a pirate, but I'll have always made that mark on the game.
Golden Sands looks AMAZING, but personally, I avoid Golden Sands as much as possible since it's way too big, and I'm constantly looking over my shoulder when I do. You never know when someone is going to pull up and take you out.

You can slap a new nameplate on it, but it'll still be Golden Sands to me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to plan my vacation to Constantinople, assuming I can get a direct flight from New Amsterdam.
My main thing about the new Fort is that I hear it has defensible cannons (I have yet to visit it), if that is true it makes it a likely fleeing-spot for non-reapers. That's at least something unique?
Ok hear me out... Heists!!! Imagine the reapers giving you quests to steal from the other trading companies. Think: The order of souls have catacombs. Maybe make it relate to that top secret door you mentioned. It would just be so awesome to steal from everyone, even the npcs
Sounds a bit over the top , but imagine if they add a bigger battle ship so it’s a standalone type of game where multiple players can join and take on the Cap’n. Mano o war springs to mind That’s what the ship build could turn into. Wouldn’t be a ship you could just sail but would be awesome as a standalone Tall Tale against the Cap’n and would bring the community together for one big badass battle.
6:05 you must be standing somewhere different, the paw prints dont come close to that direction. and its a big given, the Port will become a new Tall Tale or adventure area.
I think it would b really cool if we could completely customize our ship from bow to stern like u said with size like if u wanted a chandelier in the captain's quarters but have a small ship u still could
It would be nice if port merrick became some sort of lobby for the game. You log in and look for a crew there. Let hundreds of players run around and crash the servers.
Another thought..."Ports" are typically gateway cities/towns and PM is on the far western edge...possible entry point for GMU or whoever is backing the Sovereigns?
i agree with dropping support of the oldest console in the line. sucks for the people who stilll enjoy it at 15 frames per session. but its good for the landscape of the game
It is unlikely that the drydock doesn't end up doing something. In fact, I'm sure there will be something mechanically special about the whole outpost. It's just not like Rare to build something for no reason. If they just wanted to transform the outpost visually, they could have done it all at once in a season update instead of piece by piece. It does remind me of the examples mentioned. It's the familiar cut of Rare's sails on the horizon, laden with new content or mechanics.
There's no reason why the frame rate drops that much, the textures aren't in 4k, it's a stylized world which dramatically increases frame rate. The lights can cause problems, and the camera needs to have occlusion culling switched on, which only renders game objects in the line of view and only gameobjects you can see. I am a game developer myself.
Despite this game having some of the most complex wave systems ever, it's interesting you run better out on the seas compared to islands and outposts. But this can probably be explained by the huge amount of assets involved. Hopefully it can be fixed in the future with LOD improvements and optimizations to assets and textures
One thing I’m a little concerned about is, with the statute and the wooden trimmed picture of Merric, we have two things other than the name showing their respect to him, so WHY is there a NEW golden trimmed one in the light house, as well as what is the room at the top of the Tavern
Honestly the world feels empty because there is no section of the map where you can meet people, and be safe. Meaning anything that can bring you value at the outpost is severly hindered due to every player being scared of other players.
Its nice that they don’t wanna leave old gen behind, but they need to if we were ever to recieve anything like more map expansions and increased player caps in servers so player interaction dont die out. But anyway, heres hoping.
What is the dry dock is going to have a new ship class slowly being built in it, and eventully when that ship is complete we can have it as our very own. maybe it could even be, oh i don't know, THE MAN-O'-WAR?
Currently I think it looks really REALLY good, but I really dislike going there for anything but a quick Sovereign drop as the account of how big it is. The idea you shared of changing ship sizes mid session would be a solid addition if they ever wanted to add it is some way or another. A nice way to keep some/all of the progress and resources you got together, but to dump it in a different sized ship if you end up wanting to invite a friend or a friend has to leave. (Or the one I wish was possible, a spot to spawn one of your own captained ships when the captain has to leave, as I haven't figured out if that is even possible right now) Outside of that, I really hope Rare does something with the Man-o-war world event idea I heard the other day, but where they add something on top of it. More precisely, I think if they would add a cash-in reward for merchant/gold companies and a sink reward for reaper you could have a really cool way of making the Man-o-war not just something one or more crews could seize and use, but also a constant target if people want to get money out of it!
As an Xbox one player, who’s Xbox one is shitty already, Port Merrick runs just fine, not a single bit of lag at all anywhere in Sea of Thieves, even in tall tales. I’d have to say there sure was some PC bias when showing the Xbox one part of the video.
I'm not sure what Xbox you were using but I don't play on next gen Xbox and I have no issues at golden sands of anything, sometimes there's some bugs just in general but it's useally cause of my internet

It’s gonna be depressing when I tell someone to go to golden sands and they say “What’s that?”
Another thought..."Ports" are typically gateway cities/towns and PM is on the far western edge...possible entry point for GMU or whoever is backing the Sovereigns?
The dry dock is so in future updates you can upgrade your ship using planks to the man of war
Has their been any mention of man o war? I know players have wanted it for ages but can it be done?
The man o war isn't going to happen. The game just can't handle it. Also that idea would suck
i agree with dropping support of the oldest console in the line. sucks for the people who stilll enjoy it at 15 frames per session. but its good for the landscape of the game
Rare should cut old consoles and give old console players who went to the new gen a cosmetic or gold or something
Honestly, I'd like to see more ports in the game, if they ever introduce a new area anyway.
My OG xbox handles it fine all I have a problem is the black screen of death to and from the Ferry
You think they'll do something similar to the other outposts?
Also do you think if the reapers won golden sands it would be a flameheart fort instead?
for me looks like There is more lava stones in water now. Or its just my imagination?
I saw the desk yesterday and like oh something going on here lol I remember the rat and the cat from your theories I'm glad you mentioned that desk
Cat names trouble? I mean Captain Hook had a cat named Rum.. that's gotta be it
There is a new room behind a wall past the barrels at 6:06 that is for the next adventure
Its nice that they don’t wanna leave old gen behind, but they need to if we were ever to recieve anything like more map expansions and increased player caps in servers so player interaction dont die out. But anyway, heres hoping.
1:57 i play on xbox1 and i dont really have much issues at port merrick...
I thought it was dog paw prints and the keys for a Pirates life 2.
Yeah it looks great, but unless I spawn in there, I avoid it like the plague.
What is the dry dock is going to have a new ship class slowly being built in it, and eventully when that ship is complete we can have it as our very own. maybe it could even be, oh i don't know, THE MAN-O'-WAR?
I personally have no problems with frame rate for xbox series x
How do you get to the Pirate Legend Hideout from Port Merrick?
This also happens if another crew are close by. My Xbox One needs an upgrade
Yep being feeling that lag lately, I’ve had the original Xbox one for almost 7 years now.
Why does the area behind metrics statue remind me of the area Elizabeth fell in the first PoC movie🧐
I'm afraid that the dry dock might be teasing the man of war. I hope not
The new port is sooo beautiful idk why
Currently I think it looks really REALLY good, but I really dislike going there for anything but a quick Sovereign drop as the account of how big it is.
The idea you shared of changing ship sizes mid session would be a solid addition if they ever wanted to add it is some way or another. A nice way to keep some/all of the progress and resources you got together, but to dump it in a different sized ship if you end up wanting to invite a friend or a friend has to leave. (Or the one I wish was possible, a spot to spawn one of your own captained ships when the captain has to leave, as I haven't figured out if that is even possible right now)
Outside of that, I really hope Rare does something with the Man-o-war world event idea I heard the other day, but where they add something on top of it. More precisely, I think if they would add a cash-in reward for merchant/gold companies and a sink reward for reaper you could have a really cool way of making the Man-o-war not just something one or more crews could seize and use, but also a constant target if people want to get money out of it!
It’s the Morningstar crews cat!!!!! Also I think the ship that there building will make a reason to come to port merick
Did you keep that xbox one in your chicken coop to get the frames that low?
That would be cool if the cap’n is actually scouting the new fort
This might mean we will get new tall tails with the cap’n
For all we know he’s a good guy and a bad guy
I would love it if you could change your ship size there!
