The Yom Kippur War: Where Men Became Beasts

- Recent events have shown us how much a few days can change things in the Middle East. Just 19 days in 1973 saw a massive conflict between Israel, Egypt, Syria, and a scattering of Arab allies that still shapes the region to this day.
The Yom Kippur War as the Israelis call it, also known as the October War, the Ramadan War, or the Fourth Arab-Israeli War saw both sides endure devastating defeats and miraculous victories in one of the bloodiest chapters in the history of the modern Middle East.
Today on A Day In History, we look at how Egypt and Syria launched a sudden invasion that ended up with Israeli troops threatening both their capital cities and reshaping the landscape of Middle Eastern politics. If you appreciate videos about challenging topics like this, consider leaving a like and subscribing for more engaging videos like this one.
Origins of the War
The immediate root of the war was Israel’s success in the Six-Day War of 1967. Israel had fended off a coalition of Arab states and massively expanded its own territory, taking control of the Golan Heights from Syria, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and both the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula from Egypt.
The conflict only hardened existing animosity between Israel and the Arab states and led a coalition of countries including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq to declare the “three no’s” in their dealings with Israel: no permanent peace, no recognition of Israel’s legitimacy, and no negotiations with its government.
Egypt, who had lost the most territory to Israel, continued to engage in skirmishes along the border throughout the late 1960s until President Anwar Sadat agreed to a ceasefire in 1970. Sadat’s government signaled its willingness to break the “three no’s” by recognising the State of Israel in exchange for them returning the Sinai Peninsula and other Arab territories, but Israel turned down the terms. Sadat’s concerns were shared by his Syrian counterpart Hafiz al-Assad who made recovery of the Golan Heights a top foreign-policy priority. Under the guise of diplomatic summits, Assad and Sadat began planning an attack on Israel and both ramped up military training and recruitment.
As always, the Cold War loomed in the background. The United States backed Israel and feared that rising Arab power would increase Soviet influence in the region. Meanwhile, Egypt and Syria were in the Soviet orbit, although not nearly as closely tied to it as Israel was to its own superpower ally. Both Moscow and Washington were in a period of thawing relations after the brinkmanship of the 1960s and neither superpower was eager to see war break out in the region again. However, that did not prevent either superpower funneling arms, armor, and aircraft into their respective allies in anticipation of a potential conflict.

Recently did a project about the Arab League or the League of Arab States which is the multinational alliance which still exists right now to maintain middle eastern politics and economy. They have failed time and time again to moderate on their side of the conflict and their inability to do any decisive measures hurts the countries politically to this day. Many of those Arab states governments only seek to maintain their power and any real conflict threatens that.
I come from a city flooded by Lebanese and Syrian immigrants, most of them are actually wealthy and educated. Still something most of the them had in common was a hatred for Israel and how they all believed the problems in their countries are because of Israel… when I ask why? They could not give me a reasonable answer. Their leaders have succeeded in making them believe so.

While the ultimate result of the war was a decisive Israeli victory, this would not have been possible without considerable US arms shipments of advanced munitions. As a consequence, Kissinger was in a position to extract concessions from Israel in the Sinai, with the goal of pulling Egypt out of the Soviet sphere.
On the other hand there is also evidence that Israel refused to even consider a first strike because the US told they would not be supported had they done it. We dont know how the war would go in that case
NOT MATTER WHAT YOU SAY . ISRAEL DEFEATED THE WHOLE MIDDLE EAST
Don't forget the Russian helpong the Arab country's
No, you should read No victor no vanquished by Edward O ballance, The Israelis continued attacking after cease fire and themselves were under threat of encirclement. Had Israel not been humbled she never would have given up Arab land in sinai.
The Soviets shipped Egypt a ton of Sagger anti-tank wire guided missiles that were an unexpected blow to the IDF armored forces. I’d say Israeli intelligence really had the wool pulled over their eyes.
@@jackzimmer6553 I don’t think it’s fair to say that Egypt failed to achieve its war aims.
Since 1970-71, Egypt had broken with its Arab allies on the Three No’s, with the goal of achieving a normalization of relations with Israel, in exchange for the evacuation of the Israeli occupied Sinai, and more broadly a renunciation by Israel of all its conquests in the 1967 war.
There was a considerable body of opinion in the Israeli government who wanted to pursue this diplomatically, but were ultimately stymied by the hardliners in the government.
So, while I would never say Israel lost in 1973, their inability to win on their own resources, and the strong early showing by the Egyptian forces, did defeat the faction in Tel Aviv arguing for the permanent occupation of the Sinai.
The big winner, of course, was the US, which succeeded in pulling Egypt out of the Soviet sphere, becoming a US ally.

Yeah like the Jews revolts against the Romans, they start the fight but their butts get whipped
You can use that mindset to justify the Armenian genocide since the ottomans decided to collectively punish all Armenians in WW1 after there were Armenian militants aided by the Russians who massacred a Turkish village of 25 thousand people (all civilians). This doesn’t make the Armenian genocide justified at all which killed 100k-600k Armenians. Saying this as a Turkish person myself btw
@@cyborgpunk6668 But they weren't all collectively punished. Some fled, some were told to leave by the invading Arab league, many stayed (which is why Israel's population is 20% Arab).
@@Hankblue you realize that the ottomans told the Armenians to leave too right? That’s actually what caused most of them to be killed in the first place because a mass amount of people were poorly equipped to journey all the way to Syria since all they could take was what they were currently holding. That is exactly the same exact thing with what is happening with Palestinians when Israel told them to go to Egypt without any supplies.
Most people travel there by foot because there are almost no buses or planes because they are all destroyed. Forced moving people is a form of genocide (exodus), especially when you take into account children, the sick or disabled, and the elderly who cannot go those distances. Also that 20% Arab population is treated like second class citizens and do not have the same legal rights as Ashkenazi citizens

Especially since Hamas didn't form until 1987 and it's more complex than a just a rogue faction suddenly popping into existence to attack Israel. Yet that's pretty much what is being delivered to everyone on the world stage.
I don't condone what happened on October 7th but there are deeper rivers that flow through this and I'm not even sure many Jews are aware of it, let alone others from different countries who have not experienced the geopolitical or sociopolitial ties that bind the middle east. It's not something that I, myself, have taken to task in investigating until recently.
I understand learning about the genocide/holocaust and the Nazi regime of WW2. I think it's imperative to look at the savagery that countries and individual people inflict on others.
Not only for the sake of history but hopefully to make us better human beings as individuals because it's still happening in other parts of the world with little to no acknowledgment.
If there's one thing that I have taken away from the current events, it's my awareness of such things and how the complacency from world powers, including the UN, is one of the biggest factors to its continuation.
My personal perspective: I don't like how the specific time in history for Germany in WW2 is being exploited to elicit sympathies for Israel, by Israel...by Netanyahu.
It devalues all of those who were victimized and lost their lives during that time. It's not solely centered around the Jewish people and I don't think it ever should have been. Not to the level that it has been. It's far more complicated, historically, than that.
What I have found the most difficult in my research is that while the Nazi regime is something widely covered and easily available to everyone, the history of Israel seems to be (purposefully ?) hidden from view and I really question why that is. I'm not placing that only Netanyahu for who is censoring it, but his participation in doing it, above all else, is what I find most concerning right now.
Refreshing to hear from someone who doesn't just buy into the latest news and go from there to judge the situation.
Look at history. Stay awake.
It isn't all black and white as too many seem to believe.
Quit yapping, no one cares about your opinion or your obsession with Netanyahu
What is hidden to you in history of Israel?
Israel is doing to Palestine what Nazis did to them. Which makes Israel WORSE than Nazis
You obviously don't know history as well as you think you do. You think before WWII arabs and jews lived in harmony in Palestine? Think again, there were countless massacres on Jewish villages in the 1920's and 1930's.
You are obviously completely biased to be anti-Israel and complete hypocrite when you say you appreciate detailed accounts without your own narrative, when it is very clear that that's exactly what you are doing, even bring in your entire "personal perspective". How is that for not including your "own narrative"? Seriously?
How is Netanyahu obsessed with Palestine. They gave up Gaza in the interest of peace. They gave up the Sinai in the interest of peace. Rather counterproductive if you have the ambition to occupy it all.
Which part of the history of Israel is hidden from view?
For what happend on October 7 there is no excuse, no "hidden river" that can justify it in any way. If you think otherwise, it is clear which side you support.
Once again , history repeating itself and the devil is the victim apparently.
Allah bring Israel victory 🙏
Ok genocide supporter.
I am amazed Marocco is in the fight too… should Italy and France join Israel next time?

Good video. My only criticism would be that it did seem slightly biased in favor of Israel in a few parts. The part where you were talking about claims of war crimes for example. You went in depth into all the horrible accusations of torture and murder against the Arab forces but then when it came time to talk about the allegations against Israel, all you mentioned was Israeli settlers destroying buildings in a town as they left it. We all know that the IDF has been routinely accused of the same crimes you mentioned for the Arab forces, so why not mention them?
Ultimately though, you created a great video and I subbed to the channel. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your work.
May 2024 be a year where long term peace covers the globe ❤️

Amazing I know the aggressors showed more aggression and still lost amazing I know i'm sure that sat well with their soldiers
Recorded history is written by the victors. Who knows how many "details" are hidden.
If I'm not mistaken some of those Israeli soldiers who died in that war were female and Egypt and Syria being Muslim weren't nice to women who killed their soldiers. Today there is still horrific violence on both sides mostly because of two groups who don't represents all Jews and Palestinians. I hope there is peace someday.
There were no Israeli female soldiers in those days. Those were the days when men were men, boys were boys and women stayed at home.
They’ll only be peace when Muslims accept the land of Judea is the home of the Jewish people😊
In Islam it is written, that you may violate a woman who has been captured during war, even if she is married, so not exactly a non-sanctioned activity for muslims (women under socalled right hand posession). Violence against women is just a tool of war to them , a way to humiliate and terrorize as has happened on October 7th. We have testimonies from captured Hamas terrorists that they had instructions to do so. Of course testimonies, whether made under duress or not can be questioned for veracity but at a minimum do not exclude this explanation and we do have eyewitness accounts
what do you mean? do you mean that killing male soldiers is not as bad as killing female soldiers?
Israel has always wanted peace and there is NO equivalency between Israel and its Muslim enemies!!! As long as there is Islam there never will be peace!!! Oh, and Islam has no love for Christians or other religions either!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love humans
I mean they should’ve kept saying no negotiations with the Israeli governments.
they could’ve but that’s not what Sadat wanted
If they had, Egypt would have had a seriously problem on its hands.
The only reason Egypt had a military after all that is because Israel saw an opportunity to make peace. Absent that, Egypt would have fallen to the massed Israeli army in the Sinai. And then left. And then the other Arab states would pick at Egypt's corpse. Sadat knew this.
@@rbarnes4076 Do not underestimate the egyptian military. Israel if it wanted could have taken the entirety of egypt is completely a lie because it could have but it didn’t because israel knew it would be costly not only that more muslim countries would join the war against Israel

You didn’t mention how the Israelis lost in Ismailia and Suez and couldn’t capture any major town in the West Bank of the Suez Canal. Biased.
And that they failed to encircle the Egyptian 3rd army
@@fahoodie1852 actually, they failed to do that for the second army but succeeded in doing so for the third army. Or you could be sarcastic idk
@@KSalem32 I mixed them up apparently. This video says they encircled the army but Egyptian forces prevented that
@@fahoodie1852 when Israelis crossed the Suez Canal, Israeli forces under Sharon tried to capture Ismaïlia but they failed as they lost the battle of the city, hence their goal to cut supplies and encircle the second army failed. The Israelis however managed to encircle the third army because Sadat was being arrogant and refused to listen to his general that suggested to withdraw some of the Egyptian troops in Sinai to deal with the Israeli threat and that decrease the defensive capabilities of the Israelis and gave an advantage to the IDF.
Overall, the war on the Egyptian front was a stalemate and Egyptian forces fought really well
The video omitted the most important fact of the war, which is that after Israel was decisively defeated Golda begged Nixon to save Israel and the US literally gave Israel every weapon it had and this completely changed the course of the war as Egypt was fighting with the US and Israel combined. Despite that Israel still lost Sinai and really if they had any leverage they would have at least kept a part of Sinai, which they couldn't.
Just epic how a buch of countries with the support of a superpower got their a$$es handed to them, THRICE by one country supported by a superpower. I would fault the US for a lot of things, but in Israel they struck the goldmine of a good investment.
It also shows the quality of the militaries of both sides.
