I use Day1 on everything I pour. I've had great success with it. We always put it on before we bullfloat. Rarely have a crack. Also use it while finishing if it's getting a little tight. Great job Mike!
When I built my house almost 20 years ago, I did charcoal with a buff border in the garage. This was before epoxy was mainstream for residential. Mainly to dress it up a bit but also to hide the tire tracks that start to appear after 10 years or so. Color has definitely faded, more of a grey now, and it's inside with hardly ever getting sun. The buff still looks good .
That trowel finish will hold up fine As long as the customer keeps up on it with a quality solvent based sealer. My guys and me actually burnt my patio with a power towel like a big box store floor. I seal it every few years and it still looks beautiful. It can be a little slippery when wet, but I’m not hanging out there in the rain! It makes it easy to keep it clean with all the pine trees I have.
We used to sell a 5 gallon pail with what looked like black water. It was called liquid black. It was used mainly for commercial dumpster pads. Poured direct into concrete truck and mixed .This was in Atlanta Ga.
Been there and done that! Drove a truck just like the one in the video for 10 years! That concrete color is a pain in the ass to get off of and out of the truck!
Looks awesome. How did you finish under that plywood? Did you or the builder cut that bottom edge? Did you cut it like 1/4” higher to allow for trowel to go under? Thanks
You would work it into the wall, whether that's going underneath the sheathing or just up to it. There's going to be siding or something that comes down to cover that initial half inch or so from the wall
Looks cool guys you did that really well and quicker than me with the giant mixer! I had to hand mix a concrete patio down in Cornwall UK after a landscaper screwed it up. About 40sq M took 2 weeks off work and used Grano dust 8:1 mix about 6 inches thick. Shifted about 30 tonne bags of material over 12 days going through 3 tee shirts a day with sweat !then laid porcelain tiles looking good now with a BBQ and beer 👍👊👍

Love the color😊 I am reserving the right to change my mind based upon the exterior finishings of the house. Isn't it going to be hotter during the summer as opposed to a light gray?
@markcnc Mike mentioned this will be a porch, so it's shaded. You'll observe very little heat difference unless the sun is shinning directly on the dark grey concrete.
I'm sure the black/dark grey will look nice but just imagine how hot it will get during during the hot summer months. I notice heat coming off the bricks when I go down the front steps.
Yes, usually there is an extra charge, but professionals never hit those time caps. Usually, it is 7-10 minutes per yard of concrete. This does not include drive time or clean up. You have to either have really poor access or really not know what you're doing to go over the time
@@lancewilliamson7658, If you are a concrete company that uses the same concrete supplier, I think they average out some of that time it takes to discharge a load. If you pour a load that takes longer to pour one day, than you pour a big driveway the next day where you pour a load every 15-20 minutes, it just averages out.
THIS IS NOT A CRITIQUE... Aren't you supposed to leave a certain amount of space by code?
used black a lot........if you plan on a heavy sealer abrading the surface after it sets it will get rid of the grey and back to black ....obviously you have a rough surface but its very black
Your pouring concete on top of an exsisting slab how does it bond? And it looks like an over hang how does that work. (Disclamer i am not a concrete guy buy because of cost going to be a diy guy)
It bonds fine, typically you don't want it to bond though. I couldn't tell in the video, but usually when you pour over existing concrete you'll want to put down plastic to break the bond. The rebar, etc won't let the slab move, but if you don't use the plastic it'll suck the moisture out of the new concrete quickly and also lead to the new stuff doing whatever the old stuff did like a crack in a specific spot.
IT'S GONNA BE HOT! They better watch using salt in the winter, it will stain it and ruin the look. They should have installed heat coils to melt the snow. I put down a dark brown Trex deck 15 years ago to match the house, and it gets quite warm in the sun. I can't walk on it in my bare feet. But it beats treated wood by a mile. Mike, I love the look BTW.
