Something can’t be underrated if iyou don’t appreciate it because it’s not that great to begin with. Objectively, this movie was pretty lousy in almost every regard. Casting, performance, scene transition, fight choreography, costume design, and more. For the amazing story it had on paper, it was a let down to actually watch. This was one of the very few amazing things in the movie, and even it couldn’t save the rest of the film. But I do give it props for taking a chance at some radical ideas. And it _did_ lead to the third one, so silver lining and all.
At first I thought the idea of Dracula being "Judas Iscariot" was just a brilliant original idea, but it turns out that the concept was based on the mythological Hebrew tale which first came in public limelight in 843 A.D. in a book called "The book of Agulah" which was written by a Catholic Monk. In which states that after Judas attempted suicide after betraying Jesus, god punished and condemned him to walk the earth until its "final days", and be cursed to roam the land in darkness. Judas would never again know the comfort of death and would be damned to only feeding on the blood of living humans for eternity. I find it quite interesting how this idea was dated "843 A.D." which predates Bram Stoker and before Vampires become a notable mythological creature in popular culture, and how they tie in that story with Dracula. As much as I like the original story with Dracula making a pact with Satan after blaspheming God after the death of his wife. I feel as if making "Dracula" Judas (the ultimate human villain and betrayer) and tying those two characters together establishes a deeper connection between Judas and Jesus/God, and also makes Dracula to be one of the most frightening characters ever in Horror.
+Kamal Russell In general it's all fake, as Vampires don't even actually exist (despite stories you read and people trying to convince you otherwise), but I understand what you meant. This story wasn't Bram Stoker's initial idea, but I find it quite interesting to tie in the Dracula character with this Hebrew legend of God condemning Judas Iscariot to being a Vampire due to his betrayal of Christ for an eternity which I can imagine would be the ultimate punishment. However, I feel they could've did this better so I'm thinking maybe there's possibility they'll use it again in a future Dracula or Vampire film.
+ Kamal Russell I grew up on Gothic Horror, and Dracula is one of my all time favorite characters. I hate sound like a "know it all", but I definitely know everything there is to know about him and the history behind it.
+Kamal Russell Yes, I have every Dracula movie you could possibly think of in a collection. I keep them all in my basement which is my "Horror room" along with other Horror memorabilia and movies. It's a decent movie, but it's not something I would watch over and over.
it's a story from 843, that Judas tried to kill himself after betraying Jesus but was cursed by God (I'm assuming the father) to wander the earth and never tough the sun
It also kind of fits in with the Dracula 'theme.' They way he is traditionally played is as Vlad Tepes, after he turned his back on God as a result of losing his holy war. I always say this as a parallel to the biblical story of Lucifer, and how the devil came to be in the mythology. Judas works in very similarly with the theme of loss, betrayal, anger and revenge. Quite interesting, no?
wait, has Dracula been directly connected with Vlad Tepes in other media apart from the Keanu Reeves movie of Dracula? I don't think I've heard of another Dracula story where he turns his back on god after loosing a holy war, I think I've only seen Dracula as just always having been....what he is because he believes in his superiority (grasping at my memory at a part int he book when he's talking about a war as if he were there and were saying 'what are they compared to the blood of a roma' (or something like that - by roma of course he meant a Romanian not a Romani)
Yes Judas - the ultimate betrayor! A very sound theory of becoming Dracula. The ultimate in guilt and grief - it was such a revelatory moment for me - not that I necessarily subscribe to the theory but the film producers so cleverly put the notion out there. :)
Love that there is just a big red poster bed out in the middle of East Jerusalem while going back in time to witness an epic story. Comfort is everything I guess. lol
I've always liked the idea of this movie, that all this time, Dracula was no other than Judas, the man who betrayed Jesus, condemned Humanity's second chance at perfection, and was the Fallen Apostle, was weirdly fitting. I do love as well that even though Judas is spiteful to Jesus for what he endured for betraying him, he still felt enough to be in the prayer style, implying that Judas/Dracula still loved his childhood friend and teacher despite all of that.
I came here after hearing that this scene referred to the story of Judas being the first vampire - does this movie give us a reason why he betrayed him if he loved him?
+Kamal Russell Bram Stoker used Vlad the Impaler (particularly his name "Vlad III Dracula' - "Son of the Dragon) as inspiration, but the character Dracula itself in the original 1888 novel wasn't written to be Vlad the Impaler. That idea wasn't conceived until Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film "Dracula" which is a remake of the 1931 Universal film with Bela Lugosi. Vlad 'Tepes' or the Impaler wasn't an actual vampire.
+Kamal Russell He had a taste for blood, but not in the literal sense. He didn't actually drink blood, he was just overly comfortable in killing and impaling people on wooden spikes. He's considered a hero in Transylvania and Romania as a whole for fighting against the Muslim Turks who attempted to enslave the country and defend Christianity.
in this version, Dracula is not the "son of the dragon" from Transylvania, he is revealed to have been the traitor disciple of Jesus Christ, Judas Iscariot, who hanged himself out of the guilt of betraying Jesus for 30 pieces of silver but God would not grant him release and cursed him to live forever as a vampire named Dracula, and the fear of the cross and the weakness to sunlight and silver were all reminders of his past as a traitor
because water represents purity, being cleansed. in the narrative, Iscariot committed the most heinous sin, betrayal. and thus, he can never be clean. never be pure.
I always thought this was a brilliant concept. Judas feeling guilt then being punished to walk the Earth forever this making him hate Jesus and God and why he decided to give people his version of "eternal life" as a mockery. Its sad there wasn't a good sequel to this and that it was panned by critics. They could have done so much. Like in the old Dracula movies where his ashes are found and they sacrifice someone and "feed" his ashes with their blood and he comes back. Would have been great to see something like that.
It finishes well too, he dies by sacrificing himself and removing the vampire curse from the world. He didn’t have to remove the curse when he died. He could have left Van Helsing’s daughter as a vampire but he instead took it into himself and died. I know there are “sequels” direct to video with Jason Scott Lee, but it’s only in this one where it’s Gerard Butler as Count Dracula
Shame that they left out the best part of that monologue, "You made the world, in your image. Now..? I make it, in mine!" ...Had me sayin' "Hallelujah!!
I didn't recognize him when i first saw this movie, but after a year seeing this movie i seen Butler in "Reign of Fire" with Christian Bale which was a great dragon movie too lol
“I give your children what they crave the most. All the pleasure you would deny them.“ Why are we denied? Why do we resist? Why do we forgo displeasure? Is it not for eternal life in heaven with the Lord? I would give up every pleasure for that.
When I was little I loved this movie I used to asked like him and I had to long coat to and real life i try to hang myself because of the movie back in my childhood 😂😂😂😂
30 years ago I met someone and old guy we started talking getting to know eachother , then all of a sudden we started to talk about evil it lead to vampires then the old guy looked At me and said after Judas betrayed Christ when he tried to hang him self he did not die , that the rope burst and he fell to the ground with the sun burning his skin and he had to hide in the darkest corners of the earth and he made a deal with the devil to drink blood to survive,, Judas became the first vampire to eve exist his biggest enemy became silver as what he betrayed Christ for , then ten years after this movie came out and I remembered what he said ,,, that day he also said judas body is hidden beneath the pope castle and one single drop of wake him , my question is why would they show this about judas , a vampire that was once the man that betrayed Christ , this world has a lot more evil to come ,,,,and we’re living in a time where truth is hidden in movies and cartoons , it’s something to think about .
I kinda like how they made him Judas. It actually explains why Dracula would be 'allergic' to all thongs christian. But in the same breath if he hadn't done what he had done, I doubt Jesus would ever have been known at all.
Everyone hates Judas yet he was just playing the part written for him - he had to give Jesus up to the guards so there could be a crucifixion. In King of Kings Judas is with Barrabas as a freedome fighter, figuring they need to force Jesus to use his powers to free them from the Romans. In Last Temptation Of Christ Jesus tells Judas what he has to do. Judas asks "could you do it, could you betray your master?" Jesus replies "No, that's why I have the easy job, I just have to be crucified".
I seem to recall brief talk of a potential crossover with The Prophecy franchise. I can't find anything about that online, but being a writer myself who has had some contact with those in the industry (and those who know them) I can confirm that the idea for a crossover was discussed even if it never made the news of the day. It would have worked too since both franchises take their biblical backstories seriously. They were also owned by the same studio & what really stuck out to me was how actors Jason London & Jason Scott Lee ended up starring in the later Prophecy sequels after they had already shot the second & third Dracula 2000 films. This may be the closest we have to evidence that both actors were signed on for the crossover that never happened.
why you people saying the movie was aweful? I loved it. I mean I've seen A LOT worse. bout the only thing I didn't like about the movie was that younger acters accent kept going full Scottish/ back to English accent. but other than that. gerard by FAR played the BEST Dracula EVER.
A love it too!! Definitely not the best but not the worst and SO MUCH fun!!! We were having a ball the whole way thru, plot was fast and fun, effects were cool, story was creative, and Gerard is not hard to look at either ;)
It's not just from the movie, that version of the story of what happened to Judas Iscariot has been around for a while. Of course, there are stories from before the bible was written about vampires.
It's called brothers by Marco beltrami. He did the score for the film. Very interesting take on the theme of Count Dracula being in actuality Judas Iscariot. Brilliant premise👍💯 He was condemned to eternal life by God bc of his betrayal to Jesus for payment and subsequent suicide. He wasn't allowed to die for his sins🙁
With this adaptation by Craven, I didn't hate the idea that Dracula is really Judas... Rather than the fictional tale of "Vlad The Impaler" in Transylvania. 0:32 Why? What did you think would happen to him? I can see it in your eyes - you grieve his death. If you loved him......why did you betray him? Did you think the Romans would'v let him live?
He most likely shaved it off, the movie showed that he also had a beard when he was Vladimir the Impaler, and other identities he assumed over 2,000 years. I’m talking about the part of the film where Doctor Van Helsing described everything he knew about Count Dracula.
@@KaosNova2 Yas ik what you saying maybe there’s other to it In the sequels they also said stuff like how when Dragula returns from death He changes his appearance.
A lot of people in the Middle East are not exactly dark skinned, I mean look at the President or Dictator of Syria, Assad, he is about as pale as I am. Not saying Middle Eastern people are white, just saying they aren’t exactly all dark either.
Yuck!!! 🤮🤮🤮🤮 He ruined the Phantom of the Opera by playing the character himself!! He can't carry a tune in a bucket!! And his mask looks like it was a cheaply made Halloween costume under $10 dollars!!
The one meme from the whole movie is from the earlier part. Guy shows a vampire a cross. Vampire responds with “sorry sport, but I’m an atheist. That line makes me laugh
2:07 No. You do not give them what has been denied them. You give them what the church would deny them. You do it to hurt him. You do it out of your grief and your guilt. You cannot live with knowing that you sent someone you loved to their death. You cannot bear that agony and you have no relief from it. You cannot hide or fix what you have done. You act to spite him. You act to mock the churches that have been built in his name. You do it because you hope that you will spite him enough to return to earth and face you again. Yo do it because it is easier to live in anger than in guilt. You try to forget but you cannot. If he did come back, what would you have him do? Kill you? Fight you? Do you want that pain to justify your actions? Do you want that pain to let the pain you have inside you out? Do you want to die and to escape into darkness at last? Do you want him to apologise to you? Or do you want him to come back to give you his forgiveness?
This movie was not too good but not that bad. I actually enjoyed the final scenes starting from the revelation that Dracula was Judad, which was briliant, especially the way he died by being hanged by a rope under the image of Jesus Christ :-)
So this is the end that Satan/Demiurge/Nachash brought to the traitor, after he served him in getting rid of Jesus…. And when the Father of All Evil brought him back to life and recreated him in his image to be HIS monster of him, he poisoned him against the Rabbi and God.….
This movie is criminally underrated. Gerard Butler was an excellent Dracula and this twist on his origins is mind blowing in how much sense it makes.
The Cross, The Silver, it all makes sense
I watched it for the first time last night and couldn’t agree more
@@Rosesnthorns13It was even more mind blowing seeing it on the silver screen when it debuted👍

I loved this movie, the Judas connection blew my *mind* as a young adult!
It’s certainly a unique one compared to the French Knight origin in Castlevania or the Vlad the Impaler in the 1992 Dracula
yeah, it was a neat twist.

What happened to Dracula Beard after becoming a vampire.
He most likely shaved it off, the movie showed that he also had a beard when he was Vladimir the Impaler, and other identities he assumed over 2,000 years. I’m talking about the part of the film where Doctor Van Helsing described everything he knew about Count Dracula.
@@KaosNova2 Yas ik what you saying maybe there’s other to it In the sequels they also said stuff like how when Dragula returns from death He changes his appearance.
white jesus 😂😂😂
A lot of people in the Middle East are not exactly dark skinned, I mean look at the President or Dictator of Syria, Assad, he is about as pale as I am. Not saying Middle Eastern people are white, just saying they aren’t exactly all dark either.
Look at that spartan vampire!
Yuck!!! 🤮🤮🤮🤮 He ruined the Phantom of the Opera by playing the character himself!! He can't carry a tune in a bucket!! And his mask looks like it was a cheaply made Halloween costume under $10 dollars!!
@@jasminnemcdonald94A Your point..?
Also nice Scottish Accent!
Hey This is spaaaaaaarrrrttttttaaaa king younger days
Lovely how she is in that red dress.
What the soundtrack for this part of the movie I really want to know and also anyone 2018?
The scene got a couple of memes I can use
This is madness!
Jesus: Madness? This is Heaven!!!

This is not Vlad Tepeś.
Vlad the Impaler was one of many names he had over 2,000 years. It’s fictional anyways

JESUS LIEBT JUDAS NICHT MEHR. !
Wessel 18 in this movie his real name was Judas
I hate this guy!!😡😡😡😡 He ruined the Phantom of the Opera!!!
Its just only an imagination
Attila Amihan and your point is?
This is so disrespectful beyond measures
It's just a movie.
This means that Dracula is Jewish :D
This movie was not too good but not that bad. I actually enjoyed the final scenes starting from the revelation that Dracula was Judad, which was briliant, especially the way he died by being hanged by a rope under the image of Jesus Christ :-)
So judas and jesus is gay
Ok
ohhhhhh gives to me dracula! damn id sell my soul for that hottie
Miss Horror really ?
Aw sheet! I just got it. He's Satan. This is of course a heaven and hell story.
That's A Suicide Stranger
Islam very allergic with symbol christian.
he was a wonderful actor once, but he slipped below the baseboard, alcoholism. Morgan, drugs, total collapse.
So this is the end that Satan/Demiurge/Nachash brought to the traitor, after he served him in getting rid of Jesus…. And when the Father of All Evil brought him back to life and recreated him in his image to be HIS monster of him, he poisoned him against the Rabbi and God.….
