I saw Frank Zappa in New York City Beacon Theater one of his last shows . Didn't have a backstage pass but try to get back. Security stopped me a young man standing there with a young woman add a few other people walked up and said he's with me he's okay. Mind you I was at that concert alone no friends wise enough to travel from Long Island. That was Dweezil . He and moon okayed a total stranger with a big smile on his face through security to spend the next hour sitting in a room drinking heineken's with Frank family and band . Dweezil is a sweetheart of a man add one of the greatest guitar players on Earth thanks for that brother

The year was 1987 and a friend of a friend (both musicians) knew Ed Mann who was FZ's percussionist at the time. FZ was preparing for a European tour and has practicing with his full band for the tour. It was at a sound stage on some movie studio's lot. We were fortunate enough to gain access to rehearsal and let me say it is to this day the single greatest musical experience I've ever had!! When we first arrived the band was clowning around and actually had not played a single song. About an hour passed and in walks FZ with thermos of coffee. He pours himself a cup and lights up a smoke, then looks at his sheet music and tells the band to begin on the fourth verse of Black Lagoon, a one, two three and the band comes in perfectly like they'd been at it all day long!! FZ stopped the band several times to tell a certain member who was not playing it like he wanted, how to do it right. He even went and sat on Chad's drum stool and played a beat the way he wanted it played!! He did not play his guitar the entire rehearsal except when the band broke for lunch. We were outside hanging with Ike Willis when I heard a guitar from inside. I slipped back into the studio and there was FZ wailing away. So I quietly grabbed a chair and sat down right in front of him and watched him play for 30 minutes, nodding my head and smiling at him and enjoying a true master of his craft just sitting around entertaining himself. Oh what a night!!

Most people always wanted to hear the old songs - it must be frustrating for a musical genius like FZ if his fans never love the new art as they loved the old things. I remember the time in the 80s, when i went to the record store to hear the newest FZ record just after his release. And always i thought first - oh, this is not so good than the old ones - but i bought it anyway, went home and heared it loud on my stereo. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 times - and always it became better. And a few days later i felt confident - THIS is the best record he has ever made! So now - in my old days - i hear music with more respect for the artist. Good music is never bad - maybe i don't understand it immediately - but always i have respect to the artists work. The job of an artist is not to appeal the audience - his job is it to do what only an artist can do.

There are good current musicians but one of the reasons I like older music is because you can hear the artists experimented a lot. Genres like jazz and rock were new so they had to figure out what worked and what didn’t. Most mainstream music today is very similar and I think artists generally use the same techniques.

I'm not a huge fan of the Jazz from hell era stuff. I dunno, its a bit too clinical for my ear. But right at the end when he was doing his classical, he was striking tones I aint *ever* heard before. But it was the writings of a man who knew he was doomed. A lot of people find Yellow shark and Civ phase 3 stuff from his collaborations with Ensemble Modern mystifying work, but I think its utterly haunting.

Just jammed this acoustically two nights ago with two guitars, a stand up base, a mandolin and a violin, one of the greatest songs ever written, with such a killer three chord combo. Not sure who cuts a better lead in this version, that filthy Adrian Belew solo to start things, or Frank's second solo. Both ridiculously good.

This man is a big influence on people amongst them his drummers, guitarists etc. He's a music genius, I mean...his riffs and solos are never derivative, purely original. I can't express how much this man has helped me through my musical journey, he's been on the top of my list all along and I can't never be thankful enough to him.

OMG, thank you! My favorite guitar lick EVER! And outstanding pics, especially at 3:47. Missed "Good night Austin TX, wherever you are.." from the album with Beefheart......But I did see him live in New Haven CT once, and on his break, in the alley having a smoke, I just gazed in awe from afar, didn't want to bother him. Much later saw Zappa Does Zappa (I wouldn't ever want to see a cover band of Frank), but Dweezil and Friends were AMAZING! Love you, Frank, and I consider old (new to me) videos, popping up all the time from our musical legends to be one of the very few things I enjoy about the Internet.

In 1973, "Overnight Sensation" came out. Some critics were scathing in their reviews, referring to FZ as a joke who's on stage antics were to make up for the fact that he had no guitar skills. During a local radio interview, FZ said he was pissed about the negative reviews and comment about his lack of ability. He said the fans going to the London(Ontario Canada) concert were in for a treat as he was going to give a demonstration of his "lack of ability". Me and some friends went to see the concert and I was blown away by his unbelievable talent. I don't care what anybody says, Frank Zappa was one of the greatest guitarists ever. He was the KIng and Master of improvisational guitar.

I grew up down the street from Terry Bozzio. His son was one of my little brother's best friends. He would always let myself, my dad and brothers over to play with him because they were all percussionists, except for me. But it was still really cool to just sit and watch him especially tune in go crazy on the drums. Of course this was many years after this song was made but still it was most definitely a pleasure to meet him.
