Best James Bond opening and stunt scene. EVER !!! Rick Sylvester is THE MAN !!! July of 1976 was the month and the year. Asgard Mountain, Baffin Island, Canada was the place. Gotta love the 1970´s !!!!!!!! Greetings from STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
I was watching this film with my mum and dad on Sunday. My dad told me when 2:42 rolled around, everybody in the cinema started cheering. If only some modern films had the same gusto...
James Holmes Yes,absolutely true. I was 12 when I saw this at the cinema and the audience cheered at the parachute. That is, you all knew that he must have a 'chute, but it just had to be the Union Jack flag:). Incidentally, triple XX's boyfriend who gets shot by Bond was played by Michael Billington who, just a few years earlier, had apparently auditioned for Bond but never got the part. He is best known as Colonel Paul Foster in the '60's SF series UFO. Look closely at the guy doing the stunt, they got it in one shot but as the 'chute opens, he almost gets hit by a discarded ski!.
+James Holmes --- It's true. I saw this in the cinema twice in 1977, and both times the audience cheered when the parachute opened. Never seen that sort of reaction to a scene in a film ever again.
Omg best opening in a Bond movie ever! Between my favorite Bonds it has to fall between Roger and Sean. I'm a 52 year old man, so I remember seeing these movies as a kid growing up but never at the theaters. In this particular scene. I loved the ski pole weapon he uses which also kills the man who was agent triple X's lover.
I'm an American, but I remember being a little kid when I first saw this movie and getting charged up at seeing that British parachute with the James Bond scene playing. Whoever came up with that idea did not get paid enough.
This famous Union Jack parachute ski jump stunt was originally suggested by George Lazenby to be used in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), but the necessary equipment to film it was not available then. The Bond producers thought it was a great idea, and later added the Union Jack to the parachute and used it in this movie.
This was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema (as a 6 year old). When the parachute opened everybody stood up cheering, like England had scored a goal in the the World Cup! A simple moment of genius indeed.
That's true. I remember watching this at the theater when it first came out. After a few seconds of Bond going off the cliff, you could sense everybody thinking, "Okay, how the hell is he going to get out of THIS?!?" When the parachute opened, you could hear the laughter and excitement from the audience. It was pretty cool.
I just love how the music stops during the jump and sets in again once the parachute opens. It's just as if everyone and everything stops breathing for a moment there.
@@truckinforjesus In "For Your Eyes Only" Rick Sylvester has another incredible stunt, where he falls off a mountain while rock climbing: ruclips.net/video/8FDX6_BSas8/видео.html Imagine falling down so far and then the director is like: "Rick? We need to do that again!"
Well put, Anya is definitely one of the fittest girls in the series, and one of the most underrated ones. You should add one more thing to your comment; Moore's films have the best "action-themes/music."
That's right, it was filmed on Mount Asgard in Nunavut on Baffin Island in Auyuittuq national park. Canada may be boring, but we have some amazing scenery.
I'm here because the man who performed the stunt talked about it on Reddit. www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/4iuxrc/the_opening_scene_of_the_spy_who_loved_mein_which/d31zzrh
Gotta love the wacky disco while he's skiing. Ski off a cliff and hope the parachute doesn't get mangled by the skis, man that guy was brave. Leave the girl and she sics her team of armed assassins on you, there was always a cool sexual subtext with Moore's Bond.
Whoever had the idea of the Union Flag parachute should have received big cash. As an American I was out of my seat yelling when it opened and the Bond music played. I just saw in a show about Bond movies that when it previewed in England, the audience stood and cheered at that moment even Prince Charles!
They actually botched the ski jump at the end. Just when he plummited down they thought about what to do with the ski`s. They only just missed getting intangled in the parachute. Had that happened this stunt would have been disastrous.
This was filmed with multiple cameras but only one captured the full stunt. It's a good job because I don't think the stuntman would have done it again...
+ObjectiveResource "I liked Moore, don't get me wrong, but the franchise steered too far into camp and comedy during his tenure." That wasn't Moore's fault -- that was the fault of the producers, who tried to chase every trend in filmmaking during the 70s, be it Blaxploitation (Live And Let Die), Bruce Lee (The Man With The Golden Gun), or Star Wars (Moonraker) . . .

***** It was shot in 1976. He was referring to the place the stunt was made.
+Mr. Blackwell Yep No CGI
Saw this on the big screen during the double feature they ran after Roger died. The applause was deafening.
I saw this movie when it was released in 1977 and yes the audience went bananas!
The funky disco Bond music is what really makes this scene!
still one of the best bond films of all time
I was watching this film with my mum and dad on Sunday. My dad told me when 2:42 rolled around, everybody in the cinema started cheering. If only some modern films had the same gusto...
Same thing happened when I saw it at the cinema in Stamford, CT.
Shadowsnshades Wow! If only the same sort of enthusiasm was shown for another 'Brit' scene in other Bond films...

CaptainNemo1701 UFO by Gerry Anderson?

And the parachute jump was done by an American. Bloke called Rick Sylvester who also did a spectacular stunt on For Your Eyes Only

Nice. How do you think it's like watching it as a Brit?
This was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema (as a 6 year old). When the parachute opened everybody stood up cheering, like England had scored a goal in the the World Cup! A simple moment of genius indeed.
This scene has been digitally scorched onto my mind's hard drive and long may it remain there. One of the best openings in a bond movie.Ever.

Brilliant music and best ever Bond stunt !
I just love how the music stops during the jump and sets in again once the parachute opens. It's just as if everyone and everything stops breathing for a moment there.
Editing to perfection :D
THIS is the kind of editing trick that should have been used for the Man with the Golden Gun car jump...instead they use that stupid slide whistle...
To this day that stunt is incredible!

Greetings from Baffin Island, Canada!
Still one of the best live action movie stunts *_ever!_*
RIP Moore. We will never forget your sir. And we will never forget THIS!
"But James, I need you" ---- "So does England".
Well put, Anya is definitely one of the fittest girls in the series, and one of the most underrated ones. You should add one more thing to your comment; Moore's films have the best "action-themes/music."
That head rush has never been duplicated!
The stunt man was nearly killed by a ski. this film got standing ovations at the start and end
I would like to know who performed this stunt.
Rick Sylvester
Over 40yrs old and that stunt still stands up
Best Bond opener... Ever :)
What a scene! When I saw the film first time, it impressed me so much!!
Probably one of the Best Stunts. Awesome music too!
Incredible stunt!
Totally agree
Had a big burst of pride when the parachute opened and a big WooHoo!!!!!
James i need you!.. So does England ha ha love roger Moore!
He always has a reply, ha ha love Roger Moore
What about Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland?
Peter H Really??? I don't think it would be quite as catchy to say "the United Kingdom of Northern Ireland and Great Britain needs me"
Best Bond "rmx"!
The best ever bond stunt FACT.
I watched this film in an RAF cinema, the cheering after the Union flag parachute deployed was incredible. M.
What a great scene. Bond skis off the cliff, and everything is silent until we see that Union Jack and the Bond theme cues. Classic.
Best Bond stunt ever. I also like that version of the James Bond theme at 2:40.
Ha ha
I love it!
Thank you!
My favourite bond of all time and no one can beat him to my mind! :)
...I remember how, we all jumped out our seats! when that chute deployed... haha
still the best opening. Parker Harris. You're a funny guy, guy.
That's right, it was filmed on Mount Asgard in Nunavut on Baffin Island in Auyuittuq national park. Canada may be boring, but we have some amazing scenery.
Mount Asgard is just so beautiful

+stylac Wow, very good read! Thanks for posting this!
Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription...is "Moore" cowbell!
Gotta love the wacky disco while he's skiing. Ski off a cliff and hope the parachute doesn't get mangled by the skis, man that guy was brave. Leave the girl and she sics her team of armed assassins on you, there was always a cool sexual subtext with Moore's Bond.
Now that's what I call proper Bond. It's the ultimate 007 opening sequence.
My second favourite bond film after casino royal, fittest bond girl, best car, best opening sequence, best theme...
One of the best Bond scenes. A one-take only actually if u can believe it!! (the jump)
This and the Goldeneye dam jump are the 2 best bond stunts of all time.
Whoever had the idea of the Union Flag parachute should have received big cash. As an American I was out of my seat yelling when it opened and the Bond music played. I just saw in a show about Bond movies that when it previewed in England, the audience stood and cheered at that moment even Prince Charles!
one of rogers own favorites bond movies ; - )
This was back when live humans actually did REAL stunts, not like all the CGI special effects crap they have in all movies nowadays.
Totally agree & also brilliant music to back it up. Those were the days
Rick Sylvester did that jump. He did the climbing stunt on FOR YOUR EYES ONLY also.
Once you call someone an idiot based on a false argument, there are no rules of engagement.
These jumps and stuff are all pretty standard these days for stunk skiers.. still impressive though :)
They should have had Alan doing this as the opening sequence to Alpha Papa. "I've got to go love, something's come up!"
Surely this must be the best ever skiing performance by a Brit? :)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_the_Eagle
Been the Union Jack for over hundred years, the warship term has been abandoned now for a long time.
Nobody tears up the slopes of the green screen like Roger Moore!
Now THAT'S a stunt!!! Rick Sylvester is the man! (at least, I think that's who it was...)
2:13 That Music is more climactic than the jump itself.
They actually botched the ski jump at the end. Just when he plummited down they thought about what to do with the ski`s. They only just missed getting intangled in the parachute. Had that happened this stunt would have been disastrous.
That's pure B.S.
Rick Sylvester, the stuntman, had done it before, off of El Capitan, and he knew exactly what he was doing.
"STOP GETTING BOND WRONG !!!!"
Absolutely classic!!
Can't stand the Powder Puff, but it is one of the best stunts in the series
I think he means the shots of Moore casually skiing right after he leaves the cabin, not the jump.
This was filmed with multiple cameras but only one captured the full stunt. It's a good job because I don't think the stuntman would have done it again...
Simply a classic.
Was there ever a better Bond opening sequence? (No) and was there ever a better Bond (still No) Just the best
+ObjectiveResource so, Skyfall is not silly? Just crap
+ObjectiveResource "I liked Moore, don't get me wrong, but the franchise steered too far into camp and comedy during his tenure."

Yes, that's EXACTLY what happened. Everyone in the theater went wild :-)
Benny Hill couldn't make this any funnier.
Great stunt - this is what the internet is for.
apparently the audience went wild, when the parachute opened to reveal the union jack
BEST OF BRITSH . R.I.P.
My name is Broccoli, Albert Broccoli.
This was a real jump, this was no computer graphics. I have always thought this was the best intro.
I hear it was the queen herself who performed this stunt.
I want a wrist watch like that!
spy wearing yellow suits??? bold men if you ask me.
The falling ski comes very close to clipping the parachute at 2:42
@WardN07 I think he was referring to Roger's close-up.
R.I.P. Sir Roger Moore
amazing when you remember that Roger did all his own stunts.
darkarts59 Rick Sylvester made the ski jump.
I love the part were he shoots the bad guy and the music gets cool at that point
Im here because its on the t.v now
soo hilarious when he put on that yellow thing
''But James i need you!''
''So does England.''
sorry dont mean to be an arse but its The Union Flag, only called Jack when at sea but yep it does make you proud to be British
my mum used to buy my 3 brothers and I all the same jackets ..we looked like a baddies bunch of thugs
Yes, this was a real jump by Rick Sylvester.........Wiki said his fall for this stunt was 3000 feet.
Rick Sylvester
This scene could use more cowbell.
disco moore funk!
They are not G3's they are AR-18's with the leader carrying a 3" S&W Model 10
1 person doesn't like to get goosebumps.
Sweet. I believe the mountain he jumped off was Mount Asgard on Baffin Island, Canada.
lol... good old roger
(The Best of Bond)(2002)( explains this whole scene.
rare footage of the Soviets and Finns fighting each other in the Winter War
Facing certain death, Roger Moore's James Bond betrays no more concern than that of a man who thinks he may have sw
allowed a bad oyster
Hmmm.what did it cost in 1977, the year it came out?
The best part is where Tell Bond to pull out , and then it cuts to the part where he is in bed with the woman.
standard nowadays? I remember that there was a professional who basically tried something like this about 2-3 years ago, and was killed doing it
Thats true
who says they are Russian, they could be Stasi from the GDR
0:52 best part
RIP Roger Moore.
"MICHAEL!!"
