    Bottom of the third inning from Progressive Field in Cleveland, OH. You can see the center field camera start to shake a little bit after the 2-1 pitch to Shin-Soo Choo. Then after a hard foul ball, it really starts shaking, and WTAM Indians announcer Tom Hamilton comments about it.
    Unfazed, Choo strokes a double to the gap in right field. Later hitting a 3-run home run to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, just a day after the birth of his third child, Abigail.
    Go Tribe!
    Video is from SportsTime Ohio, audio from WTAM 1100 in Cleveland. Sorry about the audio and video quality.

    Strongest earthquake east of the Rocky Mountains in 60 years, gets a stand up double.
    Like a boss

    • @_Tommmmmm_
      @_Tommmmmm_ 10 лет назад +13

      Earthquakes east of the Rockies are felt further away than earthquakes west of the rockies because of less disturbed crust allowing the waves to travel/be felt further away. If you actually calculate it out due to the difference in the crust, this 5.9 in Virginia was about the equivalent of a 7+ in Cali.

    • @chazwonga
      @chazwonga 10 лет назад +13

      Nintenkid91
      Its not just the state of the crust but also the material/density. The more dense it is the better it conducts energy and hence the further the quake will travel. This quake was felt as far as Cananda. 7+ in Cali tho? The 1989 7.0 quake collapsed roads and ruptured gas lines.. This one shook my light shades..

    • @720069mf
      @720069mf 9 лет назад

      Nintenkid91 not true- the 5.9 quake did not have any where near the shaking intensity of a 7.0 . that 5.9 was not in any way a big quake. - I was in the 1994 6.7 Northridge quake-that was a violent quake; the quake back east was a moderate after shock by comparison. many things affect the shaking intensity of any particular quake- the depth of the fracture, soil type, the type of fault; strike / slip, blind thrust, subduction zone etc. The East coast had a moderate earthquake, thats all.

      They're not nearly as violent as you'd assume, given how much damage they used to cause. But building codes are different now, they rarely cause damage to anything but sidewalks anymore. I think the most interesting thing about an earthquake is, just a fraction of a second before it hits, you can feel the air pressure change. Just long enough for you to think "oh I feel weird" and then you feel the shaking start 😂

    In fact, there is a fault line under Lake Erie that may or may not be continuous with the one that goes through Virginia. While they felt this earthquake on 8-23-11 in downtown Cleveland (that was right under Mineral, VA), we even had a stronger one felt in southern Michigan back in 1986. That one even opened up a couple of new drainage channels under the road I live on only about two to three miles away from my house!

    This was the magnitude 5.8 earthquake whose epicenter was in Virginia; it occurred at 1:51 pm local time August 23, 2011. It was felt in twelve US states (including Ohio) and five Canadian provinces. Damage estimates ranged from 200 million to 300 million, and several minor injuries occurred near the epicenter (particularly in the town of Mineral, Virginia, where two buildings collapsed).

    My friend who was a geologist and I were sitting in the third floor of building 510 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard when he was on the phone with an engineer, and calmly expressed that he thought we were having an earthquake! He then told me the day afterwards that earthquakes on the East Coast are felt over a broader area primarily due to the solid shale aspects of the deep layers of rock. Not like the sandy layers of the West Coast, where the energy dissipates over a smaller region. When the bedrock is shale, and a fault lets loose, it is felt as far as the bedrock goes, in all directions! So those in Cleveland felt it pretty much just like we did in the Tidewater area of Virginia…a 5.8 or 5.9 Richter scale kind of feeling!

    I was working on the 4th level of the (empty, mid afternoon) Quicken Loans Arena right across the street from this game. It set off fire alarms and we went outside. As it turns out, our Eastern US earthquakes are much different than the violent ones in other places. It was like a slow, rocking back and forth like on a boat, you feel seasick but there wasnt much destruction at all. Ladles that hung on a kitchen wall were swaying back and forth before your eyes. You feel it more higher up (like this announcer did in the press box), and barely feel it at all when your feet are on ground level. It also proved to us that the fire alarms, which alerted in an empty arena with no fans, are obviously turned off in the crowded baseball park to avoid panic.

    Lol, you can see the camera jiggle before they say anything. I'm in So Cal and worked for the Angels farm league many years ago. One night we had an earthquake in the 4. area. Eveyone got quiet, then you could hear a....woooowah from the crowd. The bleachers metal frame was creaking.

    This was a mag 4.0, not enough to damage anything, but I easily felt it in my 5th floor apartment. That's the 2nd quake that I've felt in the Cleveland area. The other was a 5.5 in 1986. Pretty much everybody felt that one, even at ground level.

However, I don't blame the announcer for reacting like that either. Been through one quake myself, a 4.3 magnitude quake in Webster, NY in Spring 1973 while in school, and yes it get my attention.

      Yeah I'm from the midwest and I have never experienced an earthquake. It's not really that sad we don't have drills... It's like LA not having tornado drills or people in Georgia not knowing how to drive on snow. Those places just don't have to worry about it, so when you hear about entire cities like ATL being shut down from snow (few years ago) you know why, and it's not that big of a deal.
