    Great video and thanks for testing these titles. As a rule I prefer to use the GOG version if available (so this means no GTA, Max Payne and Total War). But the GOG version of Heroes 3 and the HD++ Patch worked last time I tried them with vanilla wine. The HD edition is just a crappy cashgrab.

      I never liked Steam since they moved Counter-Strike multiplayer to it, killing WON. Now that they are dropping Win7 support, I'm done buying from them, though I was already refraining from using it much anyway.

      Yeah, the official HD version of H3 not working on Linux is a blessing IMO.

      Unfortunately GoG did not work on this Ubuntu, and I did not want to investigate further.
      I will do a future video with GoG, Lutris and others, on older hardware.

    Ever heard of Lutris and GOG? Maybe it helps to give it a try. I played most of your tested games and I had (almost) no struggle at all. Cheers.

      I've tried Lutris and GoG, but it did not work, I could not start any of the games that I have.

    Good video! I keep reading that Linux now runs most older games with less flaws than the newest Windows. From this video, I'm not so sure about that anymore. But then again, you didn't use Lutris + specific game configs, just Steam. Maybe also make a Lutris video sometime in the future where you test the same games?

    • @MidnightGeek99
      @MidnightGeek99  Год назад +1

      Thanks! This video is not representative of Linux Gaming overall, it's just the simplest way of running old games, Steam Proton.
      I will do a Lutris video, because I want to test GoG games also.

      @@MidnightGeek99 Very cool then, if you'll also do a Lutris one. I'm curious about the results :)

    A while ago, I had Jazz Jackrabbit2 running better under Mint with WINE than it did under XP, and on a Pentium M770 with Intel 915 graphics. That same laptop was able to play Portal (at a good framerate) however - not bad for a business laptop my grandmother bought new in 2006, originally with a Celeron M380.
    Even gaming online I've gotten bored playing retro games on my main PC - I missed out on of PC gaming between the late 90's and mid 2010's, and I want to experience them on PC that'd have been attainable back then...if my parents had let me have a competent PC or even just PC games. Halo 1 on an Athlon XP 3000+ and BF1942 on a Duron 1000 with GF2 MX400 is still fun (the main issue ends up being skill).

      There are older games that work better on Linux with wine, than on modern Windows.
      The Linux gaming topic is huge, a lot to talk about :)

    De un an de zile folosesc Linux ca să joc jocuri retro și singurele cu care am avut probleme sunt cele cu care oricum aveam probleme chiar și pe Windows 7. Nu folosesc Steam. Îmi iau jocurile de pe GOG și le rulez cu Lutris.
    Referitor la controlerul de Xbawks încearcă să calibrezi jocurile separat cu antimicro.
    Multe jocuri de pe protondb care cică sunt argint sau chiar bronz rulează oricum fără probleme. Baza aia de date e cam învechită.

      Am incercat nitel GoG prin Lutris, nu a mers din prima, si am ramas la Steam. Pe viitor o sa incerc si Lutris, si altele, pentru ca vreau sa incerc pe sisteme mai vechi.

    But is it any better than using W10? From what little I’ve used Linux to game I’ve always had issues. Of course using XP or windows 7 would be best for compatibility but those aren’t supported anymore so Windows 10 or 11 would be a more fair comparison.

    • @MidnightGeek99
      @MidnightGeek99  Год назад

      There are many use cases for Linux gaming, of course, two of them are: you are not using Windows at all, for whatever reason, and 2, you have an older computer as your daily driver on which Windows 10 runs awful.

  • @TechTonic420
    @TechTonic420 Год назад

    I think that using Linux paired with KVM and VFIO to create a Windows XP or 98 VM would be a way better option since you also get the Windows kernel and the support for the actual drivers.
    And last but not least, it can also be safer this way since if you catch a virus then only the VM would be affected and you may also get a clone of you virtual drive and be back to normal in no time.

    • @MidnightGeek99
      @MidnightGeek99  Год назад

      Yes, it's a good idea for a video, and I'm curious to see what level of support you're going to get for older game, in Windows XP running under Linux.

    • @TechTonic420

      @@MidnightGeek99 i think it should be able to do everything just as it would be a native install. And also as you pointed in the video there might even be a slight benefit in terms of performance since Linux generally manages the hardware better than Windows.
      And also this would be a great opportunity to run DOS games on modern hardware without using the Type II virtualization which basically is emulation.
      While Type I (KVM along side VFIO in this case) would only make use of the Linux kernel and run the games at near native performance.

    • @MidnightGeek99
      @MidnightGeek99  Год назад +1

      Yeah, sometimes you need to fix things, this is the [Linux] way!
      It's on a game to game basis, it depends on the video card you are using, the drivers, the distribution, the method you are using etc.
