I’m 68 now but I remember this like it was yesterday ! The tune stays in my mind. The whole 70-80s were full of great soft rock hits. With lyrics you aren’t ashamed of singing aloud around kids. Blessings everyone be safe!
I was 12 when this came out and despised this song as it somehow represented to me the heralding of a _new era_ of music and the erasure of the beloved 60-70s pop and soul I had come to treasure. (funny how children develope such arbitrary values lol) After the past couple of decades of cynical debaucherous lyrics and soulless synthetic instrumentation, I truly recognize the brilliance of this and many other songs from that long gone era.
You have great taste in music. This song was playing on the radio after I asked my cute girlfriend to marry me..... that was August 1980. We were married on the First Day of Spring 21 March 1981.
I'm 32, apparently a lot younger than most of the commentators here. Although I love older music I didn't know this masterpiece until today and I'm totally in love 😮
What can I say, listening to this gem reminds me of growing up in the 70’s and 80’s…still being transported to a state of bliss love this music..awesome!
The soft rock of the 70's that then crossed over into the early 80's was the best music of my life with artists like Robbie Dupree, Paul Davis, Ambrosia, Little River Band, Dan Fogelberg, Christopher Cross, the Orleans, etc. etc. etc.
I was 14 when this was in the charts, the year when music started to actually matter to me. I'm instantly transported back by my musical time machine now I've heard this for the first time in probably 35 years
I'm in my 60 now. I was in my late 20s when this song came out. I loved it then, and still today it sounds just as fresh and wonderful as it always did.
Great one hit wonder in 1980....reminds me of my friend Sue who I had such a crush on....we stayed friends until she died suddenly at age 40 from a brain annyerism..I still miss her, but I have songs 🎵 and movies to remind and remember me of the friendship we had and the good times we had
So sweet. Like old friends these songs from this transitional era between decades (also, Christopher Cross, Roger Voudouris, Doobie Brothers, Stephen Bishop) bring back dear memories.
Do I hear Michael McDonald sing backup on this my God that guy is literally the main singer or backup singer on every single yacht Rock song and I absolutely love it😅
Retro music is so good because we are able to reminisce our memories from them. And this feeling of being nostalgic, remembering the times when we were young, wild and free is just so excruciatingly indescribable, no words can truly explain it. And that's why it's so beautiful. Heard this song on the radio again while cruising down the highway on a cool Friday night. And Friday nights used to be the time to go down to clubs, meeting new people, having a drink or two and soaking in some love memory. When we were young.
Same for my wife and I. Our first date was on 29 Feb 80, Leap Year Evening and a blind date. We were married on the 1st Day of Spring, 21 Mar 81. 40 years
This is SO MAGICAL...I haven't heard it since I was a child. It totally captivated me in the early 80's. It's funny because I had never known love, I was too young at the time. But I think we are wired like that, to recognize and identify with it, and soon seek that wonderful, precious, crazy thing for ourselves.
I remember when I was a kid, we lived in this big house in Aurora,CO that was two stories with a full sub floor, the house had an intercom system in it with a built in radio so you could play music through all the speakers, I remember playing in the bathtub as an 8 year old back in 81 and hearing this song piping through the intercom. Such a simpler time when we could just be kids, Part of me would give anything to go back, but I know it would never be the same, I'd have to have my brain wiped first.
This song just flew into my brain out of nowhere. Stored safely in my bank of songs from when I was 7 and also listening to the radio when we got our baths. And Solid Gold, and Casey Casum ❤
How many of us are still listening to this in September 2020. It would be so nice to just steal away and get out from underneath this quarantine and have life the way it used to be. Everyone please stay safe

So I go to college and am currently dating a 22 year old. I played this while we were talking. Before you know it she was smiling, said it made her feel happy and wanted me to turn it up. She loves Robbie now lol.

Hi America

I am 68 Keith, and you say it all. If I die tonight we had the best music!
Totally relate to these comments🙂
Lol I'm not sure the lyrics to this one are particularly elevating. The tune is great however.

Can't get enough of these soft rock hits. This one is one of my favorites.
I'm a Rupert Holmes fan, as well as digging Paul Davis.
Soft rock is life!
Late 70’s early 80’s had some great music like this.

Literally thought this was Steely Dan on my first listen, but have come to find a new artist, Satan Hail Yacht Rock!
Very similar harmony’s
it's too similar dude! xD i love more what a fool believes
Definitely a similar tune. Michael McDonald is like a higher pitched Robbie Dupree
Ooh yeah! Doobie Brothers, oh shucks now! You talking my language. Like this song By Robbie Dupree, too. Remember this playing on my radio.

Fast skate, backwards skate, ladies only skate, couples' skate...
I'm still learning to skate, and I once rollerbladed.
Ahhh good times, well worth the arthritis. 😂
Love 💕 it
That was exactly what I was thinking when this song started. In 1980 this WAS the couples skate song. I miss being 12 and ruling the rink!!!

Yeah Doobie Brothers I thought that too

Robbie Dupree had another hit, Hot Rod Hearts...
Here in 2024 because of the Waitrose Christmas "steal away" TV commercial where I am in the UK.
Are they promoting shoplifting? Seems a strange choice for a grocery shop 🤣🤣
I thought it was a Robbie Wiiliams soft rock new tune. I know Rob does this kind of stuff. Lol can't believe it's as old as me. I'm 50

Steal Away
Robbie Dupree
C'mon and hold me
Just like you told me
Then show me
What I want to know
Why don't we steal away
Why don't we steal away
Into the night
I know it ain't right
Tease me, why don't you please me
Then show me
What you came here for
Why don't we steal away
Why don't we steal away
Into the night
I know it ain't right
Into the night babe
Make it tonight ooohh
I caught you glancing my way
And I know what you're after (no second chances tonight)
Why don't we steal away
Why don't we steal away
Why don't we steal away
Why don't we steal away
Into the night
I know it ain't right
Into the night
I know it ain't right
Why don't we steal away
I know it ain't right
Into the night, babe
Why don't we steal away
Make it tonight
Why don't we steal away
